Chapter 10

Kira Runk was currently sitting in her apartment with the shades closed and the lights off, and a hoodie covering her face, since this was the only time she ever stopped covering up what happened to her six months ago. When she'd finally pushed science too far. Six months ago, she'd been experimenting on this weird box she'd found buried in the woods. She didn't know what it was or where it had come from, but one of her scanners had found it due to the immense energy signature it was putting off. So, of course, like any other scientist, Kira dug it up and started playing around with it, running experiments on the box, trying to figure out what the hell it was. Looking back on it now, if she'd known then what she knew now, she would've left the damn thing buried in the ground and never let it see the light of day, since this box had ruined her life.

She'd just been running tests on the box, which, as far as she could tell, had been rendered dormant from years in the ground. So she'd made the mistake of trying to kickstart it and it had worked. And the only reason she knew it was a mistake was because of what happened next. For about a minute after the box turned on, Kira felt like she'd made her first step towards becoming an accomplished scientist. Then things went south when the box exploded or at least released some kind of energy pulse that hit Kira straight in the chest and sent her flying back into the table of computers she'd had going behind her. The last thing she remembered before blacking out was feeling like her entire body was being torn apart, the pain being excruciating as she thought she was going to die.

But instead she woke up and it was not a pleasant experience. Even before Kira opened her eyes, she could feel different, like her body had somehow changed. It felt heavier. Then she was horrified when she opened her eyes to find that nearly her entire body was covered in some kind of silver metal, but that wasn't what horrified her. What horrified her was that she could feel that this metal wasn't just covering her body, it was her body now.

According to Wally and Jesse, who'd found her unconscious after the accident, whatever that box was, the energy it had released had somehow both destroyed Kira and rebuilt her into this cyborg state. They couldn't tell how much of her was robotic and how much was still biological, but they could tell her that at least for now, her state was permanent, since her new implants were likely the only things keeping her alive, considering how much of her body they took up. Trying to remove them, even if they could, would likely prove fatal to Kira.

However, Kira was relieved to find out that her body was still organic enough to require things like food, drinks and sleep. It seemed like since her brain was still human, she could still think and act like one. But the rest of her body had become foreign to her. Even her own face had become unrecognizable, since half it was covered by this metal too and one of her eyes had been replaced with a single red optic, though she'd found some advantages of that, since it allowed her to see multiple spectrums include x-ray, infrared, ultraviolet and several others.

Jesse had also begun studying her implants to better understand them, since they were all beyond any current human technology, but Jesse had learned enough to be able to devise a hologram projector that could integrated into Kira's cybernetics, which allowed her project an image of her old self again, so she could blend in and Kira rarely turned the hologram off, especially since she'd secretly modified the generator so that when her hologram was on, it disabled any nonessential piece of her cybernetics, meaning that it allowed her to maintain some sense of normalcy.

However, it also meant that Kira could never return home to Central City, since she didn't want her family to see what she'd become. Since in her opinion, she'd become a monster. She wasn't like Wally, who could turn his powers on and off whenever he wanted and could still have a normal life. She was cursed to be like this forever. That was why her primary scientific goal had been to study her bionics and the box that gave them to her to see if she could find a way to reverse what had been done. Though so far, she wasn't optimistic.

However, Kira was pulled from her thoughts when her phone rang and she saw that it was Wally.

"Wally, what's going on?" Kira asked.

"Kira, we need to tell Dinah about you. If she's going to be a part of this team, she needs to know the truth about you." Wally said.

"I don't know Wally. I mean, Dinah seems nice and all, but I don't know if we can trust her with this yet." Kira said.

"Kira, I trust her with the rest of our secrets, we can trust her with this one. Even if you don't trust her yet, you trust me don't you?" Wally asked.

"Of course." Kira said.

"Then trust that I wouldn't be asking you to do this if I didn't think that Dinah could be trusted with this secret. She's a member of our team now. We need to treat her like it." Wally said.

"Fine, but if she does anything, well then, I guess you and Jesse will finally get your wish about seeing what I can really do." Kira said, hoping that she wouldn't regret this.

"I promise this will work out for the best." Wally said.

"Okay. If you're sure." Kira said.

"I'll see you at the garage tomorrow." Wally said.

"See you there." Kira said, but right as she hung up, suddenly she felt her bionics seize up for a moment, but then they went back to normal, so Kira just figured that they needed to rest, since her human side was feeling tired anyways.

That's right, in this reality, Kira Runk is Cyborg. Hope you guys like that twist.
