Chapter 25
Tobias Whale was currently beating up Joey Toledo, since Joey had gone against his orders when he'd attacked LaShawn, since before LaShawn would just be seen as another paranoid black man in Freeland, looking over his shoulder in fear of what was to come and that was how Tobias liked it, since that fear would make sure he kept his mouth shut. However, Joey's attack had ironically been the thing to get LaShawn to open up his mouth and now he was beyond Tobias's reach in federal witness protection. And honestly, Tobias hadn't wanted to make a big deal over one puny little drug dealer going rogue on them, since LaShawn didn't know anything important and wasn't worth the headache.
But now Joey had forced him to become a priority since now the police would be gunning after the 100 harder than ever, which would make it even harder for Tobias to reach his ultimate goal of a seat on the Shadow Council.
"So, one more time, let me remind you what happens when you step out of line." Tobias said as he punched Joey's bloodied face again.
"I'm sorry boss. I thought that you'd want that loose end cut." Joey tried to apologize, but Tobias was not listening.
"LaShawn wasn't worth that headache. He was a newbie who knew nothing, we had nothing to lose by cutting him loose, since he knew nothing. But now he's been turned into a martyr and the police are gonna come after us harder than ever. And even if I had wanted him dead, I thought I taught you never to do it in the light of day with plenty of witnesses. That's just sloppy. Especially since now the Freeland PD have a warrant out for your arrest, since you were identified as one of his attackers. Now you need to find a way to fix this before Argus and that negro bastard Black Lightning come charging in here, guns blazing." Tobias informed him.
"I'll fix this boss." Joey said.
"You'd better. Especially since I've already called in an old friend of yours to help clean up your mess. In fact, here she comes now." Tobias said as a familiar face to both of them walked in.
"Syonide." Joey said to Tobias's adopted daughter.
"I'm only here because you screwed up." Syonide reminded him.
"And I need someone here I know is competent to do the job. Speaking of which, have you reached out to Tori?" Tobias asked, referring to his sister.
"She's already en route. She agreed that you'd need someone to keep you a bit more level headed with Black Lightning back in the game." Syonide said.
"Perfect." Tobias said.
"However, not all the news I bring is good." Syonide said.
"Well, luckily I'm already in a good mood now, since between your arrival and announcement of Tori's trip here, plus taking out a lot of my anger on Joey here, I'm feeling a little more reasonable. I'm assuming this has to do with the metahuman transport." Tobias asked and Syonide nodded.
"Argus took too many precautions and we haven't been able to infiltrate them yet, so none of its agents are on our payroll yet. Which means that we couldn't get any intel about the transfer." Syonide said and Tobias waved her off.
"As expected. Besides, maybe it's better this way." Tobias said.
"How so?" Joey asked, risking a question.
"Because based on the intel we were able to recover from the ASA after they went down, all the metahumans that were being transported are unstable, which means that right now they're useless, since the more they use their powers, the faster they die. We'll let Argus take their time to stabilize them, since that will give us more time to successfully infiltrate them and learn more." Tobias said.
"That's actually smart." Syonide said.
"Don't sound so surprised. In the meantime, Syonide, take a team to what's left of the ASA assets here in Freeland and see if there's anything that Argus overlooked when they were picking the Pit and all other assets clean." Tobias said.
"You got it boss." Syonide said as she walked out.
"See, now that's an employee who knows how to take pride in her work. I suggest you take lessons from her. I suggest that you redeem yourself by tracking down Lala, since he's a loose end we actually do need to take care of and who you should have been tracking." Tobias said to Joey, who knew when he was being dismissed and quickly walked out before Tobias decided to resume beating on him.
