Chapter 22

Jefferson was smiling as he saw his new janitor start his first day of work.

"Well LaShawn, welcome to your first day at Garfield." Jefferson said to the former drug dealer.

"Thank you for giving me a shot at this Mr. Pierce. I really want to set a better example for my kids. And I really appreciate you enrolling them here." LaShawn said.

"My pleasure." Jefferson said before he noticed LaShawn's face and saw that it looked beaten up.

"Something happen on your way in today?" Jefferson asked.

"I don't know what you're talking about?" LaShawn asked, trying to change the topic.

"LaShawn, this is a safe space. What happened?" Jefferson asked, though he had a guess.

"The 100. They weren't happy when they found out I wanted out and when I refused to use my new job to get drugs into this school, since it's the only place they haven't been able to get their drugs into yet and weren't happy about it." LaShawn said.

"You should go to the police." Jefferson said.

"I can't do that. I shouldn't even be telling you, considering they threatened my family. Besides, even if I did go to the police, the cops find out that I was working for the 100 and they take me away and my family has no one to support it." LaShawn said and Jefferson sighed, since he knew that LaShawn was right, no matter how much he didn't like it, but maybe he could do something else.

"LaShawn, go to Inspector Henderson, tell him I sent you. He's an old friend of mine. I promise you he will not let you go down for this." Jefferson said.

"I don't know." LaShawn said.

"What if I took you there and vouched for you." Jefferson said, since this would also give him a way to know who Black Lightning was going to be paying a visit too.

"You'd do that for a guy you barely know?" LaShawn asked.

"You told me Black Lightning gave you a second chance and I want to make sure you get the chance to make the most of it. I'll call Bill and ask him to come here." Jefferson said.

"Thank you." LaShawn said, since there was something about Jefferson that made him trust him. He just hoped that Jefferson could do what he promised.

"So, you knew that your new janitor used to be affiliated with the 100 and you still hired him?" Henderson asked after he arrived at Garfield and now he, Jefferson and LaShawn were sitting in Jefferson's office.

"I'm giving him a chance to turn his life around Bill. He was only working with the 100 to support his family." Jefferson said, hoping that Bill would agree that LaShawn didn't deserve to go to prison.

"Relax, I know you wouldn't have hired him if he was dangerous to this school or its students. Besides, I trust your instincts. And who knows, maybe he can help us build a case against the 100." Henderson said.

"I'll do whatever I can to help, but I don't know much." LaShawn said.

"Any little detail helps. Now, what's going on?" Henderson asked as Jefferson caught him up.

"Can you give me any details about the people who attacked you?" Henderson asked LaShawn.

"Not much. It all happened so fast." LaShawn said.

"Anything?" Henderson asked.

"I was driving my kids to school today when I noticed someone having car trouble on the side of the road and I thought that a good way for me to use my second chance would be to help him out, so I pulled over, got out of the car to help and then the next thing I know, I'm getting beat up by a pair a thugs while another guy just watched." LaShawn said.

"Do you remember what they looked like?" Henderson asked.

"The thugs, no, it happened too fast, but I do remember the guy I pulled over to help, he was the one who just watched. He was a white guy with long black hair, his face looked kind of ghoulish." LaShawn asked as Jefferson and Henderson exchanged looks with each other.

"Did he look like this?" Henderson asked as he showed LaShawn a picture of Joey Toledo.

"That's him." LaShawn said.

"Okay, I'm gonna have you and your family put into protective custody. Did he say anything else?" Henderson asked.

"Just that the big boss wasn't happy. Whoever that is." LaShawn said.

"Okay, Jeff, I want you to dismiss his kids immediately, we're gonna stop by his house to pick up his wife and then I'm gonna take them to the station so LaShawn can give an official statement and then I'm gonna put him and his family into witness protection." Henderson said.

"We have to relocate?" LaShawn asked.

"It's not safe for you here? I know you were hoping to leave this kind of life behind, but this is the only way to keep them safe until we can bring down the 100." Henderson said.

"Okay." LaShawn said.

"I know it isn't great, but now the police have a place to start hunting down the 100. And I promise, when you do come home, since I know you will, you'll have a job waiting for you here." Jefferson promised.

"Thank you Mr. Pierce. For everything." LaShawn said as Jefferson went to dismiss LaShawn's kids before LaShawn followed Henderson out of his office.

"Guess I'm going hunting tonight." Jefferson said, since now he had a place to start hunting for Joey Toledo and Joey would lead him to Tobias.
