Chapter 21

Jefferson was currently having a sip of scotch after work at home while Lynn was drinking some wine when they heard Anissa enter, since she'd been at the bank, hoping to secure a loan to help her at least start up her clinic, since while Lyla had promised to try and secure her some government funding, it wouldn't be easy for her to do without proof of concept, especially since right now, the government didn't exactly see the point in giving metahumans the same benefits that regular humans did, so Anissa had decided that instead of waiting for a miracle, she'd do what all normal people do when they want to start a business. She went to the bank to apply for a loan.

And considering the fact that when they heard her slam the door behind her, they were guessing it didn't go well. As evidenced by the angry look on her face when she entered the kitchen and promptly tossed the business plans she'd spent two days putting together for this presentation into the trash.

"So, I'm guessing it didn't go well?" Lynn asked.

"No it didn't. I swear that loan officer is so lucky that I don't have my powers right now." Anissa said as she began looking through the fridge for a drink.

"What happened?" Lynn asked her.

"That loan officer is so racist, he barely let me get through my presentation before he shot me down. Said that what I was proposing was bad business, but in reality, he just didn't want to deal with a black woman." Anissa said angrily.

"Anissa, you'll find a way to get your clinic off the ground." Jefferson said.

"How? Even without race being a factor, it's not like I'm the most desirable person to give a loan to right now. I'm a woman who just finished school, I'm unemployed and I still live with my parents. There's no way anyone will back me like that. Especially since metas are still considered second class citizens. No one cares about them. At least not the way I do." Anissa said as Jefferson put his on his daughter's shoulder to try and help calm her down.

"I could reach out to some friends of mine who happen to have some deep pockets, maybe they could help?" Jefferson asked.

"Thank you dad, but I don't want to resort to that yet. I want to try and get this funded on my own before I resort to taking handouts from my dad or his friends." Anissa said.

"I understand that. But I will talk to Lyla to see what the status is on that government funding she promised you." Jefferson said.

"Thanks dad." Anissa said, happy that her parents were respecting her desire to do this herself.

"Have you given any thought about where you're going to put your clinic, assuming you find the funding for it?" Lynn asked her daughter.

"Well, I was thinking that I'd put it in the building where the pods containing those Masters of Disaster were being kept before the ASA was shut down so that we can keep an eye on them." Anissa said and Jefferson nodded.

"I see you're still thinking tactically." Jefferson said and Anissa nodded.

"That is assuming I can ever find someone to fund it, since this will require money that I don't have and not many people will be willing to give me." Anissa said as Lynn picked her presentation paperwork out of the trash.

"Anissa, if you really care about this, don't give up on it. Find a way to make it happen. You're a fighter Anissa. You always have been. Just put the same kind of effort you have into your protests and your actions as Thunder and Blackbird and you'll be fine. You're a smart, compassionate and dedicated young woman. Everything a good doctor needs to be." Lynn told her as she handed the paperwork back to her.

"I'm not giving up mom, I just don't know where to start, since there's no way any gofundme I start will make enough money to fund this clinic." Anissa said.

"You'll find a way and remember, my offer still stands." Jefferson said, since both he and Lynn were thrilled that this was what Anissa was putting her time and energy into now. Trying to help people, not destroying things. It almost made them both hope that she didn't get her powers back, since they didn't want to see that undo all the progress she was making.

"Thanks dad. But do you mind if I go out for some drinks tonight? After the day I had, I need it." Anissa said.

"Go. Though you do know you don't need to ask for permission." Jefferson said.

"Still." Anissa said as she walked up to her room to change.

"I think it might be time to consider taking that cuff off Anissa so that her powers actually have a chance to manifest." Lynn said and Jefferson nodded, since they were both liking the new Anissa they were seeing.

"Yeah. But let's be sure. Maybe we can give her a trial period. We'll talk about it more later. But I was thinking that since Anissa has earned some freedom and Jen is still in Blue Valley, we have house to ourselves tonight, so maybe date night?" Jefferson asked and Lynn nodded in agreement.

At the same time, Tobias Whale was currently in his office, going over what his contact at the first bank of Freeland had told him about a girl who wanted to open up a clinic that specifically tailored to the metahumans of Freeland, something that his contact thought that he'd want to know and he was right. Tobias could definitely see the value in this, especially to his bank account, since while it would likely cost him a lot in the beginning, he could see how he could more than make that back, since he'd essentially get free access to all the metahumans in the city.

And he had just the person for the job to convince this Anissa Pierce to let him help her. Not that he'd tell her who he was. No, this was a case where anonymity would be his friend. If no one knew he was involved, then he could silently play puppet master from the shadows. He had his men following Ms. Pierce now so that he could find out everything he'd need to reel her in.
