Chapter 20
Jefferson was currently sitting at his desk at Garfield High, thinking about how he'd had to find a way to explain why his daughter had transferred schools, since while he'd stated that it was because of her abduction by the 100, but now he was trying to convince the school board not to assign extra security, since he did not want Garfield to become a school like that when he was interrupted by his secretary informing him that he had a visitor and he was surprised to see it was that LaShawn guy he'd busted up as Black Lightning.
"Mr. Pierce." LaShawn said.
"Can I help you sir?" Jefferson asked, wondering why the former drug dealer was in his school.
"I saw that you have a job opening for a janitor?" LaShawn asked and Jefferson smiled, since now he knew that he'd made the right choice by giving LaShawn a chance to turn his life around.
"You sure you're up for that? Most people wouldn't be volunteering for the role of a high school janitor?" Jefferson asked.
"I'll do whatever I need to in order to support my family. Besides, it's not like there are a ton of employment opportunities for people with my background and I need work to help support my family." LaShawn said and Jefferson nodded.
"Luckily, you should make enough to do that here, since I get it." Jefferson said.
"Thank you. Black Lightning gave me a shot to turn my life around when he didn't arrest me for making some stupid choices and I realized that there had to be a better way to support my family, since I realized that I couldn't do that from prison. Sure I'd be taken care of, but I'd leave my family in an even worse spot." LaShawn said and Jefferson nodded.
"You know that you might have to stay late somedays?" Jefferson asked.
"I'll do whatever I have to make enough money to support my family." LaShawn said.
"And I respect that." Jefferson said.
"Also, is there any chance that my kids could enroll in Garfield? Right now we're doing a combination of home and online schooling, since with me not working, they had to help pick up the slack, but now that I'm getting a job, I want them to finish their education, especially since I never did." LaShawn said.
"Give me names and I'll make sure they're enrolled in our school before your first day." Jefferson promised.
"Thank you." LaShawn said, happy to finally be getting his life on track and ensuring that his children had a brighter future.
"Have you ever thought about going back to finish your education?" Jefferson asked.
"I don't have the time to." LaShawn said.
"I could help you find time." Jefferson offered.
"Why? No offense, but most people wouldn't care about someone like me?" LaShawn asked.
"I think that everyone deserves a chance to make a better life for themselves and their families." Jefferson said.
"If you're serious about that, I'd appreciate it." LaShawn said.
"I'll send you a copy of a contract later on today and you begin orientation tomorrow." Jefferson and LaShawn nodded at him gratefully as he walked out of his office and Jefferson smiled since he could hear him on the phone with his wife, telling her how he was turning things around and Jefferson smiled at how he was helping people as himself and not just as Black Lightning. He was bringing some hope back to Freeland in more ways than one.
