Chapter 18

Henderson had been thrilled that Black Lightning had been able to bring in Lala and even more so that Lala was willing to testify against Tobias in exchange being placed into protective custody and knowing what he knew about Tobias, Henderson did not blame him in the slightest.

That was why he was arranging with the Feds for Lala to be placed into protective custody, though in a different state, since he didn't trust anyone in the state of Georgia, so it was best to get into a different city.

He was actually talking to Jefferson's ex-sister-in-law, Lyla Michaels, who he knew was in charge of the ASA's replacement, Argus, since from what he heard, Argus was probably the safest place for Lala, since there was no telling how much of the Freeland PD and maybe even the FBI Tobias had in his pocket, so Argus was the safest option.

Anyways, Henderson was doing everything he could to keep Lala protected, since he was refusing to give up any information until he was safely secured at a government safehouse or even a government prison, just so long as it was far away from Freeland and far from Tobias's reach, since he already had a target on his back in Freeland, he had no interest in making it larger, which while Henderson didn't necessarily like it, he understood it.

"So, you'll take him in?" Henderson asked Lyla.

"Yes. I'll have Gambi send a team to collect him immediately, though you should have Jefferson on standby just in case." Lyla said.

"He's already agreed to it considering what happened the last time we tried to escort a witness against Tobias into protective custody." Henderson said.

"What happened?" Lyla asked.

"Tobias ripped the kid's spine out of his back and nearly killed him." Henderson said, since Jefferson had told him about how the ASA had turned Khalil into a weapon instead of letting him rest in peace. Just another reason to be glad that the ASA was gone, since doing that to a kid was horrifying.

"My god." Lyla said.

"Yeah. The one good thing the ASA did was that they saved the kid's life, but then they ruined that by putting a chip in his head and turning him into their own private weapon." Henderson said.

"Wait, that actually sounds familiar." Lyla said, alarmed.

"What?" Henderson asked.

"Yeah, I feel like I've read about that sort of thing being done before in one of the ASA files we seized." Lyla said.

"Wait, what?" Henderson asked.

"Yeah, I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but I'm gonna need to go back through our files to be sure." Lyla said.

"Great. That's all we need. I'll let Jeff know." Henderson said, though he was hoping that they wouldn't have another Painkiller situation on their hands.

"Also, I thought you should know after going through the notes on the original vaccine program and I was thinking about bringing Dr. Helga Jace in to help with stabilizing the pods kids." Lyla said, since even though she knew that Jace was imprisoned for her crimes, she couldn't deny how useful she'd be to the cause of stabilizing metahumans, not to mention it was better to keep her in Argus' custody than to risk Markovia getting their hands on him.

"You should talk to Lynn before you commit to anything like that and you should also make sure that Jace is tagged before you bring her in, since from what I heard, her loyalty is only to herself, but she also works with whoever benefits her the most." Henderson said.

"Sounds like a real charmer. Let me guess, she'd betray us for another cause as soon as she determined that it suited her better." Lyla asked.

"Pretty much. And she and Lynn had a history in the old world. She won't be happy to hear Argus is taking Jace on." Henderson said.

"Even if we do relocate her to a more secure prison, I doubt we'll actually let her near the kids. Unlike my predecessor or Odell, I understand that mission is to save lives, not destroy or end them." Lyla said.

"I hope so, since I like you Lyla, but I don't want to have to deal with another Odell situation." Henderson said, since he and Lyla had met each other a few times before due to Jefferson and Lynn's relationship.

"And I will never become that." Lyla promised.

"Good, but you still need to keep the Markovians at bay." Henderson said.

"I've got drones and stealth units running as much reconnaissance and gathering as much intelligence as possible so I can make a plan of attack and expose Markovia for what it's really doing before they end up starting World War 3." Lyla said.

"Yeah, they definitely seem like they're ambitious enough to become the next Hitler." Henderson said.

"Anyways, the transport to pick up Lala should be there soon. Just keep him alive until then. Do not allow anyone to have access to him, since you don't know who you can trust." Lyla said.

"Already done." Henderson said, since he knew he couldn't trust certain members of his police force around Lala and he wasn't going to lose the best asset they have to build a case against Tobias.
