Chapter 14

That night, Anissa found her parents having dinner together and she was very happy about that, since it seemed like her parents were finally on the road to getting back together and even getting remarried.

"Anissa, what's going on?" Lynn asked.

"I have something I need to talk to both of you about and no it's not about the dampener or my powers or anything like that." Anissa said.

"Okay, then what is it?" Jefferson asked.

"I've been thinking about leaving the hospital." Anissa said.

"And doing what instead exactly?" Lynn asked, hoping that her daughter wasn't becoming a couch surfer.

"I've been talking to an old friend from medical school, Dr. Caitlin Snow and she gave me an idea about what I really want to do with my life." Anissa said.

"And what is that?" Jefferson asked.

"I want to start a free clinic in Freeland that tailors specifically to the impoverished side of Freeland and also the metahumans, since from what I remember in the old reality, even before the ASA took jurisdiction, metas weren't exactly treated kindly around here." Anissa said, surprising both of her parents, since that was not what they were expecting her to say.

"Really?" Lynn asked, honestly impressed.

"Yeah, I mean it was a thing before when the ASA was a threat, since starting a clinic like this would be basically like shooting ducks in a barrel for them, but now that they're no longer an issue." Anissa said.

"I think this is a great idea. And it's definitely a step in the right direction." Jefferson said and Lynn nodded in agreement.

"We both support this idea, Anissa. It'll allow you to start helping and healing people again, instead of hurting them." Lynn said and Anissa smiled at her parents.

"Thank you, though now I need to figure out how I'm going to fund it, since something like this won't be cheap." Anissa said.

"You can speak to your aunt Lyla about helping with government funding, since any facility that takes care of metahumans will need to be properly reinforced to accommodate their powers and I think that Argus could help with that. Also, you could reach out to your friend and see if whoever's funding her clinic could at least recommend someone to fund yours." Jefferson said, very proud of his daughter for thinking of this.

"Maybe." Anissa said, wondering how she was going to bring her idea to life because it cost money that she didn't have and while she loved her aunt, she didn't know if she wanted that government organization involved in her clinic, no matter how good intentioned they were or who they were run by. Her experiences with the ASA had left her permanently disillusioned with government organizations.

At the same time this was happening, Maya Odell was currently in hiding on the streets of Akashic Valley, wondering if her contact would ever show up, since she'd been in hiding ever since that nuisance Lyla Michaels had arrested her father and brought down the ASA and she was getting tired of it. Agent Michaels was responsible for losing everything. First her mother Amanda Waller's death and now her father's arrest, both of them only doing what they had to in order to protect the country.

However, Maya wasn't concerned about that right now. She was more concerned about when her new contact would arrive.

"Finally." Maya said as she saw her contact approach.

"You'd better have a good reason for calling me here Ms. Odell? You know I do not trust your family." Markovian Colonel Yuri Mosin said as he approached her.

"Relax. I'm here because I have information I'm sure you'll find interesting. The ASA has fallen." Maya said.

"Really. This is good to know." Mosin said.

"Yes, but before you start making any plans, you should know that another agency has taken jurisdiction and is keeping the metahuman pods hidden. I can tell you where they are, but it comes at a price." Maya said.

"How much money is worth betraying your nation for?" Mosin asked, since if this was genuine, he knew Markovia would pay her however much she wanted.

"No, I don't want money. I want you to get me the hell out of this country, since with my father's arrest, there's also a warrant out for my arrest unless I testify against him and I won't do that. I tell you how to get those pods and assist in your invasion plans and you offer me safe haven in Markovia. That's the deal I'm offering." Maya said.

"That is a big ask. Before we can agree, we need a sign of good faith to know you are serious." Mosin said, since his boss would likely need proof before he agreed to allow a member of the Odell family to set down roots in Markovia.

"How about the location of someone else I know that is of high interest to you." Maya said.

"And who might that be?" Mosin asked.

"Dr. Helga Jace. I know where she is." Maya said and she could tell that she had his interest.

"Give me the location. Once we confirm it is accurate, then we will be in touch about offering you safe haven in Markovia." Mosin said and Maya nodded, knowing that was best she was going to get as she gave him the location.

"We'll be in touch." Mosin said as he left about as quickly as he came.
