Chapter 11

Tobias Whale was not a happy man right now. He'd been called into Lady Eve's office and he had a feeling he knew why. His entire future was at stake because of one stupid ass neon lit up negro. Black Lightning. Tobias had built his entire criminal empire and reputation on his claim that he'd killed Black Lightning 10 years ago and until now, he thought he had.

"Lady Eve." Tobias said coldly as he entered her office, wishing that he didn't feel like he was being called into the principal's office.

"Welcome Tobias. I'm sure you know why I called you here? Your reputation is at stake." Lady Eve told him.

"I've heard the rumors." Tobias said.

"Tobias, they are not just rumors. Your entire reputation was based on the fact that you killed Black Lightning and now the underworld thinks you lied about that and are wondering what else you lied about." Eve said.

"I thought I did kill him 10 years ago. I beat his broken down negro ass so much I was sure he was dead." Tobias said.

"And I'm betting he thought the same thing about you considering the state we found you in after that brawl. You better hope that this doesn't impact your reputation, especially since I know you have aspirations to join me here on the Shadow Board and I have to admit, the timing of this could not have been worse for you." Lady Eve said.

"What do you mean?" Tobias asked.

"Oh, you haven't heard? The ASA was just brought down, which means that there is now a seat on the shadow board available, though I can't back you for it when you're at risk of losing everything you've already built." Eve said.

"What do you expect me to do?" Tobias asked impatiently, though in the back of his mind, he was thinking of ways to exploit the fall of the ASA for him.

"Damage control. Starting with your man Lala. It's because of him that some of our best sellers are in jail and we've lost the Seahorse Motel." Eve said.

"Joey Toledo is already handling it and I've got Syonide working on finding out where I can find Black Lightning, since while this negro is going to die, I need to find out if he's the real deal or just some weakass pretender who got lucky his first time out." Tobias said and Lady Eve nodded.

"At least you're already on top of this." Lady Eve said.

"Of course. Just like how I'm also thinking about how to exploit the fall of Odell and Proctor for my benefit." Tobias said.

"Careful Tobias. You shouldn't get too ambitious yet. If I were you, I'd focus more on the problem at hand. You have one week to reestablish your street credit or I will replace you with someone who can and call in a professional to deal with this Black Lightning problem." Lady Eve said.

"He's mine. No one else touches him." Tobias growled.

"Then prove it and deal with him like you should've in the first place." Lady Eve said.

"He will be." Tobias said, though he was also thinking that maybe Black Lightning wasn't the only one who needed to go.

At the same time as this, Lyla was informing Jefferson and his family of the downfall of the ASA.

"What are your plans for the pod kids?" Lynn asked, since she was still worried about them.

"I'm reaching out to an old friend who has particular expertise in metahuman biology. Dr. Caitlin Snow." Lyla said.

"Really, I was on the verge of discovering a stabilization cure in the old reality, so I was thinking that I could help with it in this reality." Lynn said.

"Don't worry Lynn. Caitlin is just going to be consulting. Since we're going to be keeping the pods here in Freeland, I was hoping that you'd be willing to head up the project, since I can see how much you care about those kids and that's the kind of person I want running this program, since I want the people on the project to remember that these kids are not weapons. Once they've been stabilized, they'll be able to start building new lives, though they will be given the option to stay with Argus, but I won't force any of them too. They're not weapons, they're human beings." Lyla said and Lynn smiled.

"And I can already tell this will work out better than it did under Odell, since I can tell that you actually do see these metas as actual people." Lynn said, very happy about that.

"Considering how many arguments John and I have had over the years about the ethics of Argus, yeah, I'm trying not to be Amanda Waller or Percy Odell." Lyla said.

"And I'm sure that you're not." Jefferson said.
