Chapter 9
Fair warning, this chapter contains yet another deviation from the arrowverse based off the most recent episode of Batwoman, but remember, this is how I wanted the show to go, not how it actually went.
"Well, you must feel proud of yourself." Bruce said to Kate as she entered his office at Wayne Enterprises.
"For what?" Kate asked.
"For making all of Gotham hate your stepmom as much as you do." Bruce said with a chuckle.
"Never hated Catherine. At least I didn't until I found out that she was the reason Beth became Alice. And also, as of this morning she's my ex-stepmom, since dad filed for divorce." Kate said and Bruce chuckled.
"And I suppose I should thank Beth, since now I can finally buy Hamilton Dynamics." Bruce said.
"Wait, what?" Kate asked.
"Yeah, ever since what Catherine did was reported on the news, the stock value of Hamilton Dynamics has been dropping as investors have been cutting ties left and right. I've already had my lawyers start buying up those shares and soon I'll have sole ownership of Hamilton Dynamics, allowing a bunch of people to keep their jobs and also giving me the authority to shut down projects there." Bruce said.
"What was Catherine building?" Kate asked, even though she already knew.
"The coil accelerator gun. A weapon capable of piercing the batsuit." Bruce said.
"And we agree that it is not a weapon that should ever be made, let alone mass produced." Kate said and Bruce nodded.
"I've already created fail safes for the suit." Bruce said.
"Speaking of which, why the hell would you store the railgun that can pierce the suit in a Wayne Enterprise R & D vault? That sort of tech belongs in the Batcave." Kate said.
"Lapse in judgment. I've already had it moved to the Batcave." Bruce said.
"I'm just curious, why not just destroy it?" Kate asked.
"No hero should ever be completely invincible. You know I like to prepare for all case scenarios, even ones that likely won't happen." Bruce said.
"I guess I can understand that. But still, storing it in a place where anyone can get to it is not smart." Kate said.
"Well, you know me, I've always been more of a big picture sort of guy and because of that, sometimes I miss small little details that seem obvious." Bruce said.
"Yeah, well, your little stunt nearly allowed Tommy Elliot to acquire a weapon that could kill anyone, including the Bat." Kate said.
"Yeah, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the person Luke told me Tommy has become. Or maybe he always was like that and I just didn't know it." Bruce said.
"Hey, we all have blindspots for the people we love. I was so obsessed with saving Beth that I let Alice kill Catherine and while I hate her, I didn't want her dead or my father in prison for a crime he didn't commit." Kate said.
"Well, now Catherine's in prison, so hopefully that will settle Alice's score for a while." Bruce said.
"I doubt it. She has a lot of scores to settle and the worst part is that a lot of them aren't wrong. She's angry at the people who abandoned her and she has every right to be." Kate said.
"And I agree with you on that. But there's throwing a tantrum and there's destroying the city and it doesn't seem like Alice can tell or wants to tell the difference." Bruce said.
"Yeah, I just wish I knew the exact instant she became this. Maybe then I could find a way to undo it. I mean, I know that Beth has to be in there somewhere." Kate said.
"Maybe, but Kate, you can't help Alice until she wants you to. You can't force her to be Beth, that has to be something she wants to do. And until she does, your priority has to be protecting Gotham from her, no matter how complicated it is." Bruce said.
"I can't do anything against her until we find my mom, since if Alice discovers that I'm Batwoman, she'll use it as leverage over me just like she's using it over my dad." Kate said.
"I've already reached out to some of my less than savory contacts about that. Maybe one of them will dig something up." Bruce said and Kate nodded.
"Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have any openings here would you?" Kate asked and Bruce chuckled.
"I actually find myself in need of a new head of security. It'll provide you with a cover for being here at all hours of the night and day." Bruce said.
"Sounds perfect." Kate said, right as the elevator dinged.
"Oh sorry Kate, my next meeting just showed up." Bruce said.
"Since when do you care about that stuff?" Kate asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Since I was able to actually give being a CEO my full attention." Bruce said and Kate nodded as she walked out of the office, right as another woman walked in.
"Well, well, Jada Jet, looking as beautiful as ever." Bruce said as he got up from behind his desk to greet her.
"Bruce Wayne, the man who owns Gotham." Jada said as they shook hands.
"Only half of it." Bruce corrected as the two chuckled.
"I have to admit, this is a lot more pleasant than our last conversation." Jada said.
"Well, it's a more pleasant topic. But anyways, have a seat." Bruce said as they took seats on opposite sides of his desk.
"Thank you." Jada said.
"So, what did you want to speak to me about?" Bruce asked.
"Well, I wanted to talk to you about the Wayne Foundation." Jada said and now Bruce had his suspicions.
"Really, that charity organization has existed for over two years and suddenly you're interested in it?" Bruce asked her.
"Bruce, that foundation does everything, builds and renovates low income housing, sets up soup kitchens and homeless shelters, hell, it's even funding educational programs to help young kids stay out of the system." Jada said.
"Yes, but I'm not seeing your point." Bruce said.
"My point is that an endeavor like that has to be costly, especially since you're not making any money off of it. Wouldn't it make sense to partner with someone else to share the load?" Jada asked.
"I'll consider it on one condition." Bruce said.
"What is it?" Jada asked.
"You tell me the truth about why you're really interested in this. It wouldn't happen to have anything to do with the person who runs the Wayne Foundation would it?" Bruce asked.
"What do you mean?" Jada asked.
"Jada, spare me, do you really think I didn't do my homework for Ryan Wilder when I hired her. I'm well aware of the real reason you're here." Bruce said.
"So you know?" Jada asked.
"That she's your daughter, yes I do. Don't worry, she doesn't know, simply because it wasn't my place to tell her. How did you find out though? After you abandoned her, I thought that you would've forgotten about her." Bruce said.
"You don't know what you're talking about and it's none of your business how I found her, but I did and call me crazy and I probably am, but I want to at least talk to her, explain things to her, since from what my research told me, she didn't have the life I wanted her to have." Jada said and Bruce sighed.
"Look Jada, I do support you being involved in the foundation and I also do want you to have some kind of relationship with Ryan, but that has to be something that she wants, especially since in the near future, she may be joining my family." Bruce said.
"What do you mean?" Jada asked and Bruce chuckled.
"Your daughter is in a very committed relationship with my nephew's stepdaughter." Bruce said.
"Bruce, I'm not asking you to jeopardize your relationship with Ryan, I'm just asking you to let me try to have one with her, if she'll let me." Jada said and Bruce nodded.
"I believe you and considering how I lost my parents, I think that if Ryan gets the opportunity to get a mother out of this, then it's worth it. You can schedule an appointment with my assistant for later this week so that we can discuss all of the details with Ryan in attendance, since as the head of the foundation, she needs to be a part of it." Bruce said and Jada nodded as she shook Bruce's hand again before leaving the office.
