Chapter 15

Is anyone else disappointed that we never got to see the sisterly bond between Kara and Kate that was clearly being set up after Oliver died take form?

Also, did anyone else hear that they're considering rebooting the DCEU? Personally, I approve of that, since the only one of those movies that I truly liked was Aquaman, though the original Justice League movie was decent.

The second Kate left Mary's hospital room, she pulled out her phone to call Luke, who while he'd wanted to be at the hospital, couldn't, simply because he and Mary hadn't met yet.

"Hey, how's Mary?" Luke asked.

"TBD. Right now she seems fine physically, though according to Alice, she's dying due to whatever the hell it was that gave her poison ivy powers." Kate said.

"Yeah, that's probably something we should keep on that downlow." Luke said.

"Yeah, I might have a fix for her, but the last thing any of us need is Vesper Fairchild getting word on this. She's already going on about the fact that Mary was saved by a Bat instead of by dad." Kate said.

"Yeah, she's being really creative about that, apparently calling you the scarlet knight." Luke said.

"I like it. A bit cheerier than the dark knight, though I will admit not quite as scary." Kate said.

"Whatever. Anyways, I'm hacking into Gotham General's database now, I'll let you know when Mary's blood work shows nothing irregular." Luke said.

"Good. And by the way, is there any chance Wayne is working on prosthetics?" Kate asked him.

"Sorry no, but you should definitely pitch that to Bruce." Luke said.

"I'm surprised he never thought about that, considering how useful it could be if one of his numerous enemies found something capable of getting past the nanotech and tearing his arm off, since that suit might be tough, but it's not Kryptonian, meaning that it can break under the right circumstances." Kate said.

"You can ask him when he gets to the hospital, he should be there soon." Luke said.

"Good. Now in the meantime, I need to make some more calls, see if I can figure something out to help Ryan." Kate said.

"Is there anything else I should know?" Luke asked.

"Yeah, Mary knows I'm Batwoman and she figured out that Bruce is Batman, so wrap your head around that." Kate said.

"And you trust her to keep that secret?" Luke asked.

"I trust that we know a martian who can erase her memory and the memories of anyone she slips up and tells, but considering she knows to keep her powers a secret, I think we can trust her with this." Kate said.

"Fair point." Luke admitted.

"I believe that Mary can be trusted. The only reason I never brought her in before was because I didn't want to put her at risk. You're one thing, you were practically born into this life like Julia, since your dad was Bruce's left hand while Alfred was his right, you knew the risks going into this. But I couldn't put Mary at risk too." Kate said.

"You're a good sister Kate. At least to Mary. Alice, you try to beat the shit out of every time you see her." Luke said and Kate chuckled.

"Like you wouldn't if you had a shot at her." Kate said.

"Fair point." Luke agreed as Kate hung up before dialing another number, this one to an island out in the Mediterranean.

"Well, this is a surprise. I did not think I'd be hearing from you again. At least not this soon." Safiyah said after she picked up.

"This is my thank you for letting me bring a desert rose home with me." Kate said.

"You're welcome, but you must remember to keep it a secret, but I'm guessing you have a question about its capabilities?" Safiyah asked her.

"Yeah, I know that it can cure most afflictions, but what about something called cellular degeneration? My sister is suffering from it." Kate said.

"Alice is suffering from cellular degeneration?" Safiyah asked and that caught Kate's attention.

"How did you know that Beth was going by the name Alice and more importantly, how did you even know she was alive?" Kate asked dangerously.

"You weren't talking about your biological sister were you?" Safiyah asked, realizing her mistake.

"Nope, but why do I get the feeling that Beth spent some time in Coryana before I did and you never bothered to tell me that." Kate said.

"I knew what Alice had become and I wanted to spare you the pain and allow you to remember your sister as she was." Safiyah said and Kate could understand that, but at the same time, she was still pissed and she was going to use it to get Safiyah to do what she wanted.

"And my mother, did you know she was still alive?" Kate asked.

"Yes I did. Alice brought her here after she escaped from the Cartwright family that had been holding her captive and she begged me to save her and I did, since I respected the lengths your mother went to in order to protect her daughter. However, when Alice betrayed me, I exiled her and she took your mother with her." Safiyah said.

"You realize that you owe me for this Safiyah. Lying to me about my family, when you know how personal this is for me." Kate said.

"What do you want?" Safiyah asked, knowing that Kate was right.

"Permission to use the desert rose to save my stepsister Mary, I promise she'll keep it a secret, since no one besides me, her and Alice know she's sick and you have to use your resources to find my mother. Once that is done, I'll consider us even." Kate said.

"Agreed." Safiyah said.

"But I'm assuming that the desert rose can cure Mary's condition?" Kate asked.

"Yes, it should." Safiyah said.

"What about severed limbs?" Kate asked, since even though she was fairly sure she knew the answer to this question, she needed to know for sure.

"Unfortunately, even the desert rose has its limits. It cannot regenerate a lost limb." Safiyah said.

"I figured as much, but I figured I'd better check." Kate said.

"I'll let you know if we find anything on your mother." Safiyah said as she hung up. Kate took a deep breath to calm herself down before she made one last phone call, but before she could, she heard some kind of yelling coming from the waiting room, so she made her way there and found her cousin Bruce had arrived, but to her surprise, he'd come with none other than the CEO of Jeturian, who she was convinced was a former fling of his, Jada Jet.

"What is she doing here?" Kate asked, confused about why Ms. Jett would be there.

"I came as soon as I heard about Ryan's injuries." Jada said.

"Why would you care about Ryan's injuries? She doesn't work for your company?" Kate asked.

"You're right Kate, but Jada does have a different connection to Ryan. A biological one." Bruce said.

"Wait, you're saying that Jada Jet is Ryan's mom? I thought her mother was dead?" Kate asked, looking at Jada.

"It's complicated and I'm not telling anyone the story before I tell her." Jada said, right as a doctor came out.

"Is everything okay?" Kate asked.

"Ms. Hamilton should be cleared to go in a few hours, but there's been a complication with Ms. Wilder's surgery." the doctor said.

"What kind of complication?" Kate asked.

"She's lost a lot of blood and while we've started a transfusion, we're not sure if we have enough to safely complete the operation." the doctor said.

"Maybe I could help with that, I am her biological mother and I'd be more than happy to provide blood for a transfusion." Jada said.

"Ms. Kane, according to Ms. Wilder's updated records, in the event that Ms. Hamilton is unable to provide consent, which she is not due to her also being hospitalized, you're listed as the one who can make these decisions on behalf of Ms. Wilder." the doctor said, much to Kate's surprise.

"Test her, see if she's the same blood type and also confirm her claim that she's Ryan's mother, but don't tell Mary anything about this yet, I don't want her to rile herself up even more than she already is about Ryan." Kate said and the doctor nodded as she led Jada away from the rest of them for a blood test.

"You really believe that she's Ryan's mother?" Kate asked Bruce.

"I do and I wouldn't have called her if I didn't. I've known about Ryan's connection to Jada for years, but never told her, just because it wasn't my place to say. I figured if Jada wanted anything to do with Ryan, she'd reach out and she did." Bruce said and Kate nodded.

"And why were you so late to get here?" Kate asked.

"I'll tell you later." Bruce said and Kate nodded, since she could tell by the look on Bruce's face that it was something that was really distracting him.

"Also, how come your company doesn't do anything with prosthetics, considering what they could do for you?" Kate asked and Bruce chuckled.

"Believe me, I tried to get that launched, but unfortunately, a majority of my board doesn't believe in the use of developing robotics." Bruce said and Kate chuckled.

"That's what you get for sticking with men older than you." Kate said and Bruce chuckled as they continued to make small talk.
