Chapter 25
The actress who plays young Ryan Wilder is Ashley Aufderheide, who played Gwen on that 90's Show on Netflix. Just so that people don't imagine a younger Javicia Leslie for her right now.
Ryan Wilder was currently lying in a hospital bed at Gotham General, wondering who was paying for all this, since there was no way that Gotham's crappy foster care system would cover her medical expenses. Or any part of Gotham's government for that matter.
However, her questions about this were answered when she heard the door to her room open and she saw Kate Kane, one of the richest women in Gotham, walk into her room.
"Okay, what brings a member of Gotham's one percent to my hospital room?" Ryan asked.
"You mean besides the fact that I'm the one paying your hospital bills?" Kate asked, shocking her.
"Wait, you're the reason anyone's giving a damn about me?" Ryan asked in shock.
"I saw your story on the news." Kate said.
"And you thought that you'd make yourself feel better about being rich by showing me some charity?" Ryan asked her.
"Actually, I did some digging on you and I have to admit, I saw a little bit of myself in you." Kate said.
"What could I possibly have in common with you?" Ryan asked.
"I know what it's like to be rejected just for who I am." Kate said.
"Really?" Ryan asked, finding it hard to believe that a rich white girl like Kate Kane had ever been rejected in her life.
"I was expelled from Point Rock Military Academy because I'm gay and then the only woman I've ever loved rejected me on the same day, choosing an outdated institution over me, especially after my own father talked her into doing it and I'm not even going to go into him." Kate said.
"Damn, that sucks." Ryan said, since it sounded like Ms. Kane understood her better than she thought.
"Your dad is Crows Commander Jacob Kane?" Ryan asked.
"Unfortunately. He and I are not on speaking terms and I've denounced the Crows. He's my dad by blood, not by choice. He and I haven't seen eye to eye since my mom and sister died when I was around your age." Kate said.
"So you know he's a dick and his organization is full of racist bastards who don't care about this city and abuse their power?" Ryan asked.
"As soon as I find a way to phrase that without it resulting in a defamation suit, I'm putting out a statement with those exact words. Especially since I know what Agent Tavaroff did to your adoptive mother Cora Lewis last year and how he claimed it was an accident and that she got caught in the crossfire with some gang and while my dad may have bought that BS, I don't." Kate said and Ryan actually smiled at her.
"You really did your homework on me." Ryan said, though she was wondering why.
"I did, since there is a reason I've taken so much of an interest in you Ryan. How would you feel if, after you're released, instead of going back into the system, you come live with me and my sister at Wayne Manor?" Kate asked.
"Wait, are you saying that you want to adopt me?" Ryan asked in shock, since after Cora died, she didn't think anyone else would want to, especially a rich white woman.
"Only if you want to. Nothing's a done deal yet, but I think I could give you a good life. Even though you'd run the risk of becoming the very thing you hate. A rich girl." Kate said with a smile.
"I'll learn to live with myself if it means not having to worry about where I'm going to sleep at night and have reliable access to food. Besides, with the influence that will no doubt come with being Kate Kane's daughter, maybe I can actually help change things." Ryan said and Kate smiled.
"Fair enough. Though there will be rules and if you get arrested for any kind of protest, I will make you spend the night in jail." Kate said, since while she broke the law as Batwoman, she wasn't going to allow Ryan to do it in protests.
"Fine." Ryan said.
"Okay, so you're okay with this?" Kate asked.
"I am." Ryan said.
"Okay then, I'll call my cousin in the DA's office and tell her to put the paperwork through so that by the time you're discharged, you'll be cleared to come with me." Kate said.
"Thank you. For everything." Ryan said.
"Let's hope you still feel that way in a few weeks." Kate said with a chuckle, though she couldn't believe that she was actually about to become a mother. She just hoped that she could raise Ryan to be like Dick and Helena and not Jason.
