Chapter 17

"How bad is it?" Kate asked Luke when she and Helena returned to the Batcave.

"Bad. While you, Helena and the Crows were able to contain the riots, several prisoners escaped. And that's not the worst part." Luke said.

"Please don't say what I think you're about to say." Kate said, only to see the look on Luke's face.

"The riot was a distraction to keep you busy so that you wouldn't focus on Level two." Luke said as he revealed security cam footage courtesy of Argus.

"What is that?" Mary asked.

"That is level two. And it looks like it's been cleared out." Kate said.

"Yep. All of Bruce's worst enemies have been freed." Luke said.

"We need to get down there and find out how they got out." Helena said.

"This was planned." Kate said.

"How do you know?" Helena asked.

"Because I fought the mastermind behind the riot at Arkham. Some crazy blonde chick named Alice." Kate said as Luke brought up the image of Batwoman and Alice fighting at Arkham.

"You think that she was behind this?" Helena asked, thinking that was a big step for a newbie, even for Gotham.

"It's the only way she could've been Arkham and not wearing a prisoner's jumpsuit." Kate said.

"We can worry about her later. Right now we need to worry about the fact that the worst villains of Gotham's past have been released." Helena said.

"Guess I'm going to have to prove myself to Gotham much sooner and faster than I thought. Just wait till the Joker finds out that Batman left town." Kate said.

"That will not be pretty. He'll probably take it as an insult that Batman left Gotham and he wasn't the reason for it." Luke said.

"He's our top priority, since he's the most dangerous out of all of Bruce's old enemies." Kate said.

"No arguments here. But trust me, every time he's broken out, dad and I have searched everywhere for him, but he knows how to stay hidden until he wants attention. All of them are. Though dad did put up surveillance in a few of their lairs in case they returned, though unfortunately, most of them were smart enough to have more than one, so they more than likely know which ones are burned and won't return there." Helena said.

"Still, it's better than nothing. We should also check in on a certain reptile, make sure he isn't involved in anything, since while he and Bruce reached a truce years ago, we need to make sure that he's not falling back into old habits." Kate said and Helena and Luke both nodded.

"How did Bruce and Killer Croc reach a truce anyways?" Mary asked.

"Bruce always knew that it wasn't Killer Croc's fault he was the way he was and in all honesty, all Killer Croc really wanted was to be left alone. And it was the infection that turned him into what he was, so after years of fighting, Bruce finally managed to find a way to get through to Croc and talk to him and they reached a deal. If Croc stayed in the Slaughter Swamps outside of Gotham, he would make sure that no one ever tried to find him again. Especially since he helped Croc fake his death with GCPD, since I'm sure that you've heard about that." Luke said.

"Yeah, I remember seeing it on the news that the GCPD killed Killer Croc." Mary said.

"What they actually did was blow up a lifelike replica Bruce had made and planted in Croc's sewer lair, which the GCPD just dropped a truckload of thermite on top. Bruce used one of the teeth he'd collected from Killer Croc over the years to help sell it." Luke said.

"And Bruce just believed that Killer Croc would keep his promise?" Mary asked.

"Of course not. Dad reached out to an old associate of his out in those swamps to keep an eye on him. Trust me, you don't want to know." Helena said and Mary decided to take their word for it.

"Okay then. So, what now?" Mary asked.

"Now the Huntress and I go and inspect Level Two to find out how the inmates escaped while Luke lets Argus know to release a statement that the criminals have escaped, since while I don't want to panic Gotham, I do want them to be prepared, since I know that Arkham would rather keep this quiet and the GCPD and the Crows don't know level two exists and they never can. I do not want dad knowing about that." Kate said.

"Agreed. But is there anything I can do?" Mary asked.

"Not right now. But I'd keep my eyes open if I were you, since a lot of these criminals will likely attempt to seek medical care and they can't exactly walk into a hospital." Kate said.

"We should also be prepared for Two Face to show up, since that is what brought me back to Gotham in the first place." Helena said.

"I'll set up a tip line and tap into both GCPD and the Crows' dispatch to keep track of any sign of these guys." Luke said.

"Let's get to work." Kate said as she and Helena went to suit backup to return to Gotham.
