Chapter 8

"My liege, are you sure it's wise to deal with men like this? They are criminals without honor." Sarab asked his master as they walked through the slums of Ivy Town towards a building that Ra's knew was actually the base of the leader of Ivy Town's criminal element, Lonnie Machin.

"Exactly. Sending my own men here to attack would immediately alert Nyssa to my presence and cause her to prepare. But, if she's too busy dealing with this fool's thugs, then she'll never know we were involved." Ra's said and Sarab nodded, though deep down, he was uneasy about resorting to such methods. However, he'd sworn his loyalty to Ra's al Ghul and unlike their target, he kept his word.

"Good. Now, let's go inform Mr. Machin of how beneficial it would be to him and more importantly his well being to assist us." Ra's said.

More like assist you. Sarab said in his mind. Only it wasn't Sarab's voice. It was Maseo's. But he quickly silenced that voice, since he's sworn that Maseo Yamashiro had died when Sarab was born. It wouldn't do anyone any good to listen to ghosts.

To say Lonnie Machin was surprised when some freak in a robe surrounded by a bunch of clowns in what looked like ninja pajamas entered his office.

"Mr. Machin, we need to talk." the leader said.

"Yeah, you see, I don't like it when people, especially freaks in clown suits, come bargaining into my office." Machin said as he pulled out his gun and aimed it at the leader.

"I think you will find this worth making an exception." the man said as he tossed a bag onto Machin's desk and Machin cautiously opened the bag only to relax when he saw it was loaded with cash.

"Well, since you're asking so nicely, I suppose I can make an exception. What can I do for you?" Lonnie asked.

"I've come a long way to offer you a mutually beneficial arrangement." Ra's said.

"How so?" Lonnie asked as he gestured to Ra's to take a seat on the other side of his desk, which Ra's did.

"Based on what I've heard, there's only one thing standing between you and ruling this whole city. I'm offering you the chance to eliminate it." Ra's said and Machin glowered.

"Artemis. Ever since that little silver hooded bitch and her crew showed up a couple of weeks ago, I've been losing turf to her. People who were once afraid of me aren't anymore. I've been trying to put her down for weeks without success." Machin said.

"Well, I'm here to offer my help, since one of her associates, Enyo, I believe she calls herself, has crossed me. I need your help to get a better idea of exactly what I am dealing with. You get Artemis and I get Enyo and then we both get what we want." Ra's said.

"And how do I know that you won't double cross me as soon as it's convenient for you?" Machin asked.

"I could ask you the same question. Neither of us trust each other, which is fine, because we do not need to. We just need to work together long enough for both of us to get what we want." Ra's said.

"If you keep payments like this one coming, you've got yourself a deal." Machin said.

"I understand that criminals such as yourself like to keep themselves compensated, so I will oblige you with this request, however, you will be paid when I decide to give it to you, so make this last and do not cross me until our deal is complete. Otherwise, you face the wrath of Ra's al Ghul." Ra's said as he left Machin's office with his men, none of them aware that their conversation had been listened in on.

"Did your father really think we wouldn't notice him looking like that. I mean seriously, you'd think he'd at least try to blend in?" Thea asked Nyssa as they, plus Roy and Ryan, watched the feed from the surveillance cameras Ryan had hacked into.

"I try not to think about what goes through my father's head for the sake of my own sanity." Nyssa said.

"That's fair. But did you guys see the look on Sarab's face during that entire interaction?" Roy asked as Ryan rewinded and zoomed in on Sarab during the footage.

"Yeah, it's not hard to tell that he's conflicted about being involved in something like this." Thea said.

"Even back in the old reality, there were times when I could tell that Sarab was compromised by Maseo. I believe that the man Oliver once called his friend is still in there somewhere. We just need to find a way to bring him out." Nyssa said.

"Didn't Oliver try that and fail? And I mean those two were pretty close." Roy said.

"True, but Oliver was always preoccupied with other things to be able to fully bring him out." Nyssa said.

"Well we're going to focus on bringing Maseo out of Sarab. If we can get through to him, then we have an advantage that's too important to give up." Thea said.

"That will require additional assistance, since none of us have a connection to Maseo and Oliver's too busy in Star City to help." Nyssa said.

"I know, but there's someone else who might be even more effective." Thea said.

"Tatsu." Nyssa realized.

"She was Maseo's wife and from what you told me Nyssa, she never gave up hope that she could put her family back together. If we got Oliver to reach out to her, I'm sure she'd agree to help." Thea said.

"I thought we weren't telling Oliver about this to keep him from dealing with it himself." Ryan asked.

"This is different. Ollie knows I can handle myself and he knows that Ivy Town is my city to protect, not his." Thea said and they all nodded in agreement, since at least now they had the start of a plan.
