Chapter 4
Ryan Choi was very glad that Mar Novu had paid him a visit after he'd woken up in this new reality, since it had been very jarring to find out he'd never met his wife or had his daughter, but Novu had helped him through that, saying that he was repaying the debt he owed Ryan for trying to talk him out of activating that experiment in the old universe. Novu had also told him that he'd have a new role to play in this new world, one that would help him find a new purpose. The only thing about his life that remained the same was that he was a physics professor at Ivy Town University.
But he was wondering what Novu had meant by a new role to play in this universe, though that question had been answered after he'd gotten the phone call from Oliver Queen telling him about his sister Thea and her plan to be to Ivy Town what her brother was to Star City and since Ryan had honestly kind of enjoyed the thrill of being a hero, even though he didn't think he'd truly gotten the experience, since the most heroic thing he'd done during Crisis was try to convince one version of Mar Novu not to use his machine, but it turned out that had been pointless since there were countless versions of him to convince and Ryan would not have lived long enough to speak to them all, even if they had considered that, which they hadn't.
He was kind of eager to see what it would be like if it was done right. That was why he'd taken a few days off from work to begin to put some stuff in order, since while he had his own lab at Ivy Town University, it wasn't exactly equipped to serve as a superhero lair, especially since people could walk in at any point they wanted.
They'd need somewhere much more secure than that to have as a base, especially since his lab was cluttered up enough as it was from his experiments that he couldn't fit anything else in it. But anyways, he knew that Thea would be back in town soon with her boyfriend Roy, who, from what Oliver had told him, had been his protegee once upon a time and they were both as skill as him, though honestly, Ryan was still under the belief that the Green Arrow was the greatest them all, but since it sounded like both Roy and Thea had been trained by him, he had a feeling that Ivy Town would be in good hands.
Anyways, Ryan had spent the past few days trying to find a place that would make a good location for a secret base and while he'd found a few options, he'd need to get Thea's approval since she was the boss and he was also eager to find out how exactly she was planning to fund their operations, since from what Ryan could tell, the price tag on any vigilante operation would not be cheap and while Thea was rich, she couldn't exactly use that money solely to fund her exploits. Something told him that her mom would not approve.
Anyways, he was pulled from his thoughts when he heard one of his grad student assistants enter his lab.
"Professor Choi." the student said.
"Yes, what is it Kevin?" Ryan asked the student, Kevin Tran (before anyone says anything, I watch Supernatural, so yes I'm aware of the impact of using that name, since I know that Osric Chau plays both Kevin Tran and Ryan Choi. The choice was intentional and no, the actor who'd play my version of Kevin Tran is not also Osric Choi, since he's not going to be a regular character in this story. At least I don't think he will be. And now back to the story).
"There's a Thea Queen here to see you, though she's not on your schedule or even a science student." Kevin said.
"Send her in and then take the rest of the night off." Ryan said and Kevin nodded as he walked out of the lab shortly before Thea Queen entered it.
"So, you must be Ryan Choi." Thea said.
"And you must be Thea Queen, your brother spoke quite highly of you when he and I talked over the phone." Ryan said.
"I'm sure he did. Though he didn't mention much about you." Thea said.
"That's probably because the only time he met me, he was a bit more focused on rebooting the universe. Honestly, I kind of felt like the odd man out, since it seemed like almost everyone else besides Lex Luthor and maybe Kate Kane had some kind of connection to Oliver already." Ryan said and Thea nodded.
"Well, I decided I'd stop by here to make sure that you're truly ready to enter this world, since trust me, once you get in it, there's no getting out." Thea said.
"You're speaking from the experience?" Ryan asked and Thea nodded.
"About a year after I first started being a vigilante, I decided to get out. The thing is, every time I tried, I could never find myself staying out for long. This life, it just kept pulling me back in. So, are you sure you're ready to commit yourself to this, since it's an all or nothing kind of deal." Thea said.
"Yeah, I'm in. I mean, I know I'm likely the rookie and I have a lot to learn, even if I'm just going to be your guy in a chair, but I'm willing to put in the world, as long as you're willing to give me a chance." Ryan said.
"Sounds fair. Oliver trusts you, that much I can tell and while he has been known to make mistakes before, I think the fact that you're a paragon speaks wonders. I just needed to make sure that you were ready to commit to this." Thea said and Ryan nodded.
"And now that you know that I am?" Ryan asked as Thea handed him a piece of paper.
"This is the address of my apartment. Come by there later tonight to meet the rest of the team." Thea said and Ryan nodded as he took the paper.
