Chapter 21

Roy took a deep breath as he sat in the visitor's wing of Iron Heights, thinking that he'd have never thought he'd be in this place as a visitor and not an inmate. Not that he was complaining about that. Still, it felt weird to be here and not be in handcuffs. Especially since this place still held bad memories from when he was a prisoner in this place after he'd taken the fall for Oliver as the Arrow. Something he still held a bit of a grudge against Lance for.

Anyways, he was pulled from his thoughts when he saw the guards bring a young african american woman out of the cell block.

"You must be Zara Williams." Roy said, surprised by how young Zara looked, since while he remembered her file said she was only 16 years old.

"Who wants to know?" Zara asked.

"A guy who's interested in getting you out of here." Roy said, since he could already tell that this girl was a lot like he'd been before he'd met the Queen family, so he'd need to approach her as someone who had something to offer her.

"I'm listening." Zara said as Roy took a closer look at her.

"You okay? You look like you've seen some action." Roy asked, since it looked Zara was definitely a fighter of some kind.

"I'm fine. Trust me, you should see the person who lost the fight." Zara said.

"So, you're a fighter." Roy said, even though he already knew that.

"Yeah, you can say that." Zara said, as she eyed him.

"Right, sorry. My name is Roy Harper and I'm an agent with the Advanced Research Group United Support or simply Argus." Roy said.

"Why would I want anything to do with a suit?" Zara demanded.

"Because believe it or not, I actually know you better than you realize, since once upon a time, I was you." Roy said.

"Excuse me?" Zara asked.

"Young, hotheaded, angry at the world, I even had a juvie record. Does that sound familiar?" Roy asked with a smirk.

"Coincidence." Zara said.

"I also know what it's like to lose your mom at a young age and have a dad who doesn't even exist." Roy said, only to have Zara snarl at him.

"You have no idea what it feels like." Zara said.

"To feel unwanted? Yes, I do. My father walked out on my mom before I was born, just like yours did and my mother made sure I knew it." Roy said bitterly, since one thing that hadn't changed in this new reality was that he had crap parents.

"Even if you do know what it's like, why would I want to go with you?" Zara asked.

"You mean, besides the fact it's the only way you're getting out of here before your 2 year sentence is over?" Roy asked.

"Please, a white boy in a suit never offers someone like me a deal without a catch, so I want to know what's in it for me? What do I have to gain that won't end up landing me back in jail?" Zara demanded.

"Because I can help you get what you really want." Roy said.

"And what do you think I want?" Zara asked.

"Answers about your past? About your heritage. You wanna know exactly what kind of jackass your father was so you know exactly why you hate him, instead of just the obvious reasons. I told you, I've been where you are." Roy said.

"And why do you care?" Zara asked.

"Because like I said, I know what it's like to have people think I'll never amount to something because of where I come from, since I grew up in the most impoverished area of Star City, the Glades. No one gave a damn about me, so I did what I had to in order to survive. But eventually, I found my way out of that life." Roy said.

"How?" Zara asked, genuinely curious.

"I just needed someone to give me a chance and they did. They took a chance on me and gave me a chance to become the best version of myself and that's what I want to do for you." Roy said, thinking that it was actually two someones who'd taken a chance on him. Both Oliver and Thea had taken a chance on him and had turned him into the man he was now. And now he wanted to offer that chance to Zara. A chance to help her be something better than what she was now.

"You promise if I go with you, I won't end up back in here?" Zara asked.

"Not unless you do something that actually warrants it." Roy said, though considering that Zara would be joining Team Artemis, he doubted that would be the case.

"Okay then Mr. Federal Agent, get me the hell out of here." Zara said and Roy smiled.

"It'll take a few days to get everything sorted out and made official, but after that, you'll be transferred to my custody on a conditional release until such a time that you prove that those circumstances are no longer needed and you'll be completely free and clear." Roy said.

"So, just a few more days in this hell hole and then I'm free?" Zara said and Roy nodded.

"Think you can wait that long?" Roy asked.

"As long as you actually keep your word, yes." Zara said.

"Okay then, I'll let you know when everything is in order." Roy said as he held out his hand, which Zara cautiously shook.
