Chapter 16

The second the lock was released, Tommy burst out of the cell, but before he could even think about attacking Thea, Oliver stepped between them.

"Don't even think about it Tommy. If you couldn't beat Thea then you definitely don't stand a chance against me. Especially without your weapons." Oliver said with a glare, since this wasn't his best friend he was looking at. He was looking at the result of yet another one of Malcolm's manipulations.

"She got lucky." Tommy said.

"Trust me, she didn't. And you won't either. I'm only going to give you one chance. Stand down and let us help you." Oliver said as the two former friends sized each other up.

"Help me what. Go back to being the weak, fragile, pathetic wimp I was before?" Tommy asked.

"Help you become the man your mother always believed you could be. Tell me, what would she think of the man you've become? The man you've allowed your father to turn you into." Oliver asked.

"I wouldn't know, since the dead don't want anything or have any thoughts. And the people who are responsible for her death will pay." Tommy said.

"One person is responsible for your mother's death. Do you really think that all the other people deserve to die too?" Oliver asked.

"Enough talk." Tommy said as he flung himself at his best friend, only to find himself quickly outmatched as Oliver had him on the ground even faster than Thea had.

"If you're going to do something here John, now would be the time. I can't hold him forever." Oliver said and Constantine nodded as he muttered some incomprehensible words that resulted in Tommy being knocked out.

"So, what do we do now?" Thea asked.

"Now comes the fun part. My guess is that when this Merlyn bloke messed with his son's mind, he more or less locked the real Tommy Merlyn away inside his mind." John said.

"Makes sense. The fact that he responded when Thea told him she was his sister means that the real Tommy is still in there. We just need to find a way to reach him." Oliver said.

"Well I'm afraid there's only one way to do that quickly my boy. I can send us inside his head, or rather into his subconscious. From there, we'll most likely need to fight our way past whatever mental defenses that no doubt have been put in place to ensure that the brainwashing remains intact until we find the real Tommy." Constantine said.

"And once we do?" Oliver asked.

"Well then comes the real challenge. Convincing young Mr. Merlyn to wake up." Constantine said.

"Let me guess. Easier said than done?" Thea asked.

"That love would be an understatement. But the question remains, think you two can handle the trip?" Constantine asked.

"He'd do it for us." Oliver said and Thea nodded, since no one knew Tommy Merlyn than they did in either reality.

"Okay then. Let's do this." Constantine said as Oliver laid Tommy on the ground.

"So, how does this work?" Thea asked, even though she had an idea.

"It's simple enough. However, I want you to brace yourself. Whatever it is that's got a hold of his mind, it won't give it up without a fight." Constantine said.

"Never met a fight I could turn down." Oliver said.

"I'm well aware Oliver, but this is different." Constantine said.

"Let's just do this before he wakes up." Thea said and Constantine nodded.

"Brace yourselves. This will be a little rough." Constantine said as they each placed a hand on Tommy's forehead before beginning the spell.

"Cogitationes meae, cogitationes vestrae fiet." Constantine said and suddenly, the world went dark as all three of them collapsed to the ground.

When the world stopped spinning, Oliver and Thea found themselves now wearing their vigilante gear, minus the hoods and masks and Constantine was with them.

"Well, here we are. Inside Mr. Merlyn's mind. Though I guess I should've mentioned this before but now that we're in, I can't get us out without him leading the way." Constantine said.

"So what you're saying is that we're essentially stuck in here forever unless this works?" Thea asked.

"Pretty much." Constantine said.

"Sounds about right with you. Where do we start?" Oliver asked.

"I suggest we try to determine what this place is, since right now we're his subconscious." John said.

"Which means that whatever this place is, it's likely a place that's familiar to him." Thea said and Constantine nodded.

"Great." Oliver said as they looked around to try to figure out where the hell they were.

"Wait, this place looks like the Merlyn family mansion." Oliver said.

"Are you sure. Cuz this doesn't look the way I remember it." Thea said.

"That's because this is the way it looked before you were born. Before Rebecca died." Oliver said.

"Does it mean something significant?" Constantine asked and Oliver nodded.

"Yeah. Because it means that the house looks the way it did when Tommy still had a family, since before his mother was killed, his father was actually a decent man, a good husband and father who loved his family more than anything. But after Rebecca Merlyn died, that all changed and Malcolm became the son of a bitch that he is today." Oliver said, thinking once again about just much he was going to enjoy killing Merlyn, since honestly, while he wasn't the man Chase had thought he was, he wouldn't deny there were kills he'd made that he'd enjoyed and Malcolm was definitely one of them, since the SOB more than had it coming.

"Got it. I have to admit, that is crafty. Putting him in a cage he won't want to leave." John said.

"So, how do we get him out?" Oliver asked.

"First we need to find him and then you need to convince him that this isn't real." Constantine said.

"Too bad you'll never get the chance to do that." a new voice said and Oliver and Thea turned to see Malcolm Merlyn, standing there in full Dark Archer garb, looking at them.

"I don't know how you got in here, but you don't belong and you'll never find him. He's buried too deep in his pain." Malcolm said.

"No, he's not too far gone to be saved and I'm going to do to you what I'm going to do to the real Merlyn." Oliver said angrily.

"You really think you can beat me Oliver?" Malcolm asked, only to be stunned as Oliver quickly killed him with a well placed arrow.

"He's lucky we're in a bit of a rush. Now, let's find Tommy." Oliver said and John nodded as they continued searching the house.
