Chapter 19

Ares and Artemis continued to fight and Artemis was easily able to take control of the fight, since while Ares may be older and more powerful, he was also less experienced at using an avatar than she was. Something that Artemis intended to exploit, since unlike her brother, she knew exactly what she was doing and how to use an avatar, which was how she was able to force Ares back.

"What is going on? How are you beating me? And why am I feeling weaker?" Ares demanded, since while he'd felt powerful before the fight had begun, now he was feeling weak, like his vessel was weakening.

"It's simple really. I'm better than you." Artemis said, not wanting to give up her advantage over him.

"No, my vessel, it feels weak." Ares said, not understanding.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out after I return you to the void where you belong." Artemis said as she aimed an arrow at him.

"No. This is not over." Ares said as he vanished a tower of flames and from the sounds she was hearing outside, Artemis assumed that his army had fled as well, and sure enough, when she walked out to find her team standing among the bodies of the Yakuza and Ares' warriors, though she was surprised to see Aqualad of the same teenaged girl Artemis had seen following Ares' orders earlier.

"Do I want to know?" Artemis asked.

"She's alive and she's coming back to the tower with us." Aqualad said.

"Why?" Artemis asked.

"She's our daughter." Wonder Girl said and now Artemis understood.

"Let's go. We have a lot to fill each other in on. Including the fact that we're not just dealing with a madman. We're dealing with Ares himself." Artemis said, much to their shock.

"Yeah, it sounds like your story is a lot more interesting." Garth said.

"I don't know about that." Artemis said as she looked at the girl in Aqualad's arms.

"Well, the DNA tests came back positive to confirm it." Dick said as he returned from the lab, since before they allowed Garth and Donna to get their hopes up, so Dick had taken a blood sample from the girl and from Donna and Garth to run a dna test.

"So she is our daughter?" Garth asked as he looked over at the young girl who was still out cold on the couch.

"Yeah, she is. I'm still trying to figure out how she ended running with a crew like Lonnie Machin's, since that guy's psychopath, considering how many wanted lists he's on." Dick said.

"And it's even worse than you think." Thea said as she and Roy joined them.

"How much worse could it get?" Kory asked.

"Machin is like me, an avatar and he's the avatar of Ares. That's why our battle got so heated. It's lucky I was able to force him to retreat." Thea said.

"How? From what Diana told me, Ares is not the retreating type." Donna asked her.

"And normally he's not, but he didn't have a choice, since Machin may be an avatar, but he won't last long." Thea said.

"What do you mean?" Roy asked.

"Ares doesn't know how to have a vessel. He doesn't understand humans and most importantly, he doesn't understand their limits." Thea said as Donna got it.

"He's gonna burn Machin out." Donna said.

"Exactly." Thea said.

"Wait, do we need to worry about Artemis doing the same thing to you?" Roy asked his girlfriend with concern.

"No, don't worry, my situation is different. I spent years on Themyscira going through intense training to make me stronger physically, mentally and spiritually to prepare me for becoming Artemis's avatar, even before I knew what was happening. I spent years undergoing prep to become a goddess. Prep that Machin did not go through and that Ares doesn't know is necessary. Not to mention I also spent that time learning more about Artemis so that I'd understand her. Our connection is symbiotic and a partnership. Neither of us use the other for power, we work together. And she mainly lets me drive, she just pops in whenever something big is going on." Thea said.

"So, how long do you think it'll take Ares to burn Machin out?" Dick asked Thea.

"No clue. But he definitely sped up the process today during our fight, since he tried to force too much power through his avatar at once. He didn't take time preparing for that." Thea said.

"Okay then. Now, what about Zara?" Garth asked, turning the subject back to his and Donna's daughter.

"I accessed the SFPD's record and found that Zara has quite a wrap sheet. Apparently life has not been kind to her. She bounced around the foster care system for years until she eventually dropped out of it and from what I can tell, it looks like she just fell in with the wrong crowd and things just kind of kept going downhill from there." Dick said.

"Sounds like she's like I was when I was her age. When she was doing what she had to in order to survive." Roy said sympathetically.

"Well she's done with that now, since now that we have our daughter back, we're not letting her go." Garth said.

"You can't force your way into Zara's life. She's almost 18, she can make her own choices." Thea said.

"And she can hear everything you're saying and can speak for herself." a new voice said, alerting them all that Zara was awake.

"Sorry, we didn't realize you were awake." Thea apologized.

"It's fine. But I heard your friend confirm that I really am your daughter." Zara said to Garth and Donna.

"You are." Garth said as Thea, Roy, Dick and Kory moved to leave the room, giving them some privacy.

"Why did you abandon me?" Zara asked.

"Zara, we didn't want to abandon you and Garth didn't even know about you until a few weeks ago." Donna said.

"Still, why did you give me up if you apparently love me?" Zara asked.

"To protect you. Garth and I come from two warring races. The Amazons and the Atlanteans. They have a very long standing grudge between the two and the idea of the two races having a relationship, let alone conceiving a child together. I didn't want to put a target on your back. Though now I know that at least some of the Amazons knew about our relationship and since there's been a change in leadership there, we don't have to hide our romance or you from them anymore." Donna said.

"Did you think about me?" Zara asked her.

"Every day and every night. And I kept this with me the whole time." Donna said as she pulled and handed Zara an old photo.

"Is this me?" Zara asked, since it was a picture of a baby.

"The day you were born. Every day I wondered what happened to you and it was torture not knowing what could've happened." Donna said.

"I always wondered why I was so different from everyone else. Why every foster family seem to give up on me. It's because I wasn't like everyone else, am I?" Donna asked.

"No, you're not. You are the combination of two worlds." Garth said.

"I'd like to learn more about these worlds. And about myself and you two. And well, everything." Zara said and both of her parents smiled.

"Where should we start?" Donna asked, happy to finally be getting to know her daughter.
