Chapter 13
Thea spent the next two years training hard with Garth, who was very impressed by how quickly Thea was learning Atlantean combat techniques and thanks to the herb she'd taken before she'd left Themyscira, he was able to teach her how to fight both on land and underwater.
During that time, she and Roy also bonded with Garth, Dick and Kory and Roy wasn't even jealous of the amount of time Thea spent alone with Garth as they trained, since he'd quickly come to see that Garth was not interested in Thea like that, since his heart was still hung up on this Donna girl who'd bailed and Roy had to admit, he was curious about why she'd done that, since Garth had become his good friend.
Anyways, Thea and Garth had just finished today's training session and Thea was growing restless, since ever since the year had begun, she'd been counting down the days until Oliver returned home from Lian Yu, quietly counting down the days until she could see her brother again.
However, she was pulled from her thoughts when she heard the alarms going off that someone was at the front door.
"What's going on?" Thea asked as she, along with the rest of the titans got into fighting positions.
"Someone's triggered the security sensors at the front door." Dick said as they went to the computer hub to find a video feed of the front door of the tower with a familiar woman dressed in black leather standing at the front door.
"Is that Donna?" Kory asked.
"No way she's here by coincidence. Especially since it's been two years since the Titans became active again." Thea said as Donna looked up at the cameras.
"So I guess you changed the locks?" Donna asked.
"Let her in, let's find out what she wants." Thea said, since she couldn't help the feeling of dread that was coming over her, since she doubted Donna would leave Themyscira to come here to all places for any good reason.
"Right." Dick said as he let Donna in.
"Thea." Donna said when she got off the elevator, heading straight for her fellow Amazon, completely ignoring the other titans.
"Donna, what's going on?" Thea asked, noticing the distressed look on Donna's face.
"I've been sent to bring you back to Themyscira immediately." Donna said.
"Why?" Thea asked, growing concerned.
"Thea, Queen Hippolyta is dead." Donna said, much to Thea's shock.
"What, how?" Thea asked, since the Queen had been like a second mother to her while she was on Themyscira.
"We don't know yet. But it wasn't natural. But Diana wants you there before we put her to rest." Donna said.
"Of course. Are they going to try to bring her back?" Thea asked, since she knew that the Amazons had a few methods of resurrection besides the Lazarus Pit.
"Not until we know what killed her. That's the other reason Diana wants you back on the island. She has a theory she wants to talk to you about." Donna said and Thea nodded.
"I understand." Thea said, honestly still processing the news.
"Can we come?" Roy asked, causing Donna to look at the other titans for the first time.
"No. I'm sorry, but this ceremony is strictly Amazons only. Besides, men are forbidden from setting foot on our island." Donna said apologetically.
"Donna, are you not even going to acknowledge the rest of us?" Garth finally asked, since he could tell that she was going out of her way to avoid the other Titans, or specifically, him.
"I didn't come here to catch up. I came here to retrieve my sister in arms." Donna said, though Thea could see the pained look in Donna's eyes and she also noticed how as Donna spoke to Garth, her hands seemed to subconsciously rub her stomach and that was when Thea put the pieces together.
"We need to get going. I'm sure that Diana is having a hard enough time processing this without us delaying her mother's funeral." Thea said, deciding that she'd talk to Donna about this in private.
"How long will you be gone?" Roy asked.
"She should be back within a week." Donna promised.
"Let's go." Thea said, since she didn't need any of her belongings for this particular trip. Donna nodded as the two headed out.
"So, mind telling me why you were going out of your way to avoid Garth when you arrived at the Tower?" Thea asked Donna, who sighed.
"Do I look like I want to talk about it Thea?" Donna asked.
"Donna, I saw the way you were looking at Garth, Dick told me your history with him and I saw the way you rubbed your stomach when you were talking to him. I think I know what happened, but there is one thing I want to know." Thea said.
"And that is?" Donna asked.
"Did you have a boy or a girl?" Thea asked, shocking Donna.
"You figured it out?" Donna asked.
"It's common enough in the world of men to recognize the signs. So?" Thea asked and Donna sighed.
"Yes, I was pregnant with Garth's child. It was an accident and he never knew." Donna said.
"Why didn't you tell him?" Thea asked.
"You know how our peoples feel about each other. I didn't want him or our child to suffer because of it. That's why I left the Titans. I lied and said I had to go home early when in reality, I stayed hidden for nine months until after I'd given birth to our baby, who I gave up for adoption, since if Atlantis ever found out that Garth not only had a child out of wedlock, but a child with an Amazon, it wouldn't just mean exile, it would mean a death sentence. I didn't want that for our daughter. I hid her and then returned to Themyscira and hoped that no one would ever find out." Donna said and it was clear that her voice, while made with the best of intentions, was making her miserable.
"Donna, I'm so sorry you had to do that. It's not right or fair to you or your daughter or Garth." Thea said.
"Not a day goes by that I don't wish I could find my daughter and hold her in my arms. The closest I'll ever get to that is the picture I have of her from the day she was born. I keep it with me at all times, never letting anyone else see it." Donna said.
"Can I see it?" Thea asked and Donna nodded, since she knew that Thea wouldn't judge her.
"Promise me you'll keep this secret." Donna said as she showed Thea the picture of her baby girl.
"I will, but honestly Donna, I think that you should tell Diana. Remember, she has the same compassion for humanity we do." Thea said.
"Maybe." Donna said, though she still wasn't convinced.
