Chapter 12
The next day, Dick took Thea to one of the less affluent parts of San Francisco.
"Wait, this is where Garth lives?" Thea asked, wondering why he'd trade the swankiness and luxury of the tower for this shithole part of the city.
"After Donna left, he was broken. He didn't want to be reminded of her. Part of why he left." Dick said.
"They were more than friends weren't they?" Thea asked and Dick nodded.
"They were lovers. A real Romeo and Juliet kind of situation there, since we both know how Amazons and Atlanteans feel about each other." Dick said and Thea nodded.
"Yeah, though I think that the Amazons are growing more tolerant, since they didn't seem to make too big a deal out of me needing to be trained by one, though that might just be because they wouldn't dare disrespect a command of one of the old gods." Thea said.
"Yeah, well anyways, Donna tried to ignore her feelings for Garth when she first joined us, but eventually, he wore her down. Honestly, it was kind of weird when they first got together." Dick said.
"How so?" Thea asked as they continued walking.
"They were polar opposites. If you've met Donna, then I'm sure you know what she's like." Dick asked.
"You mean rigid and uptight?" Thea asked with a smile, which Dick chuckled.
"And serious, yeah. She was always kind of a stick in the mud. But Garth, he was a fun loving, go with the flow kind of guy. Probably because he was free from the oppressive rule of Atlantis." Dick said.
"I really wish Arthur would decide to suck it up and take the throne, since honestly, it sounds like Atlantis would be a much better place with him in charge." Thea said.
"True. But anyways, I can't tell you how many times I felt like a third wheel before Kory joined the team, since even when they weren't together, you could feel the tension between them. Eventually Garth managed to wear Donna down and she gave into her feelings about him. They were a great couple and a great team, even though they had to keep it a secret from their respective homes. Then Donna ghosted us and went back to Themyscira and things kind of fell apart from there." Dick said and Thea nodded as they arrived at an apartment door.
"Garth, open up." Dick said as he knocked on the door.
"Go away Dick." a guy's voice said from the other side of the door.
"You know I was just saying that as a courtesy right. I don't need your permission to enter. Especially since I'm the one covering your rent." Dick said, since he'd been covering Garth's rent ever since he'd left the Titans.
"Fine." Garth said and Thea was surprised when the door opened and she saw a man who at one point might've been handsome at one point, but now he had unkempt long blonde hair, an unshaven face and clearly reeked of alcohol.
"Garth, I see you're doing well." Dick said, sad at seeing his old friend in this state.
"Shut up dick. What do you want?" Garth asked.
"I'm here because we're getting the Titans back together." Dick said.
"Do I look like I'm in any shape to be a Titan again or that I'd want to?" Garth asked.
"Garth, my name is Thea and I was sent here to find you." Thea said, deciding to take a shot at this, since she had a feeling she knew what he was going through.
"By whom?" Garth asked lazily.
"A man named Nuidis Vulko." Thea said and she could see that got his attention.
"Okay, come in and tell me what's going on?" Garth asked, since as much as he didn't want to admit it, he was interested in why Vulko would send her to him.
"So, you're the avatar of the old god Artemis and you've spent the past few years on Themyscira being trained by the Amazons, but now you're here because you need to be trained by an Atlantean and Vulko knew that King Orm would never allow that." Garth said after Thea explained everything to him.
"Yeah. And for the record, I saw Donna while I was on the island. I think there was more to the story then you knew, she seemed angry and bitter the whole time I was there. I think there was more to her leaving than you know. And since I will be going back to Themyscira at some point, I will ask her why she left, since I think that you deserve those answers." Thea said.
"I'd really appreciate that and yes, once I get back into proper fighting shape, I will train you just like how I trained Arthur before he decided he didn't need me anymore." Garth said.
"Thank you." Thea said.
"So, does this mean you're coming back to the Tower now?" Dick asked.
"Yeah, I am." Garth confirmed.
"Good, because we miss you." Dick said.
"I have to admit, I have missed the Tower and the Titans. I'm glad we're getting the gang back together." Garth said.
"We'll leave you to get packed up." Dick said as he and Thea left the apartment.
