Chapter 11

"So, you and Oliver up and bought a ranch house. I thought you would've gotten your fill of nature." Quentin said to his daughter as they sat in the parlor of the Queen Mansion.

"One good thing about all that time on the island, solitude. No paparazzi trying to get any dirt on us and the ranch is the same way. A place where Jasmine can just be a kid growing up without the press always interested in her next move. At least when she's there." Laurel said.

"I understand that. Have you gotten her enrolled in preschool yet?" Quentin asked.

"No, honestly, I'm trying to put that off as long as I can, just because I am not ready to admit that my baby girl is growing up." Laurel said and Quentin laughed.

"I understand that. I was the same way with you and your sister. I'm just curious, what is Oliver going to do when she discovers boys?" Quentin asked.

"That's what his gun is for." Laurel said.

"A man after my own heart. Not that it stopped you from falling for him." Quentin said.

"You say that like it's a bad thing. There are worse men I could've fallen for." Laurel said.

"True, but Laurel, there's something all dads have programmed into them the moment their daughters are born. No man is ever going to be good enough for their little girl. Though I have to admit, Queen is as close as it's going to get." Quentin said and Laurel smiled.

"Well I appreciate you saying that." Laurel said.

"So anyways, when exactly are you going to head to work? I mean, you got your law license back right?" Quentin asked.

"I did and I will be going back to work once I find a place to work." Laurel said.

"I could talk to Kate Spencer at the DA's office if you want." Quentin said.

"God no. I may have spent 5 years on a deserted island, but I still remember that Kate Spencer is incredibly corrupt. The last thing I want to do is work for her." Laurel said.

"Really. So, where exactly are you planning on working?" Quentin asked.

"Somewhere I can do some real good for this city. I'm thinking about following Ollie's lead. Starting up a nonprofit law firm in the Glades to provide legal services to people who wouldn't be able to afford them otherwise. I mean how many of the prisoners in Iron Heights and Blackgate are in there just because they couldn't afford a decent lawyer." Laurel said and Quentin smiled at her.

"That's my girl. Trying to help those who can't afford to help themselves. Especially since you're set for life with that inheritance your boyfriend is going to get." Quentin said.

"And here I thought I'd convinced you I wasn't with Oliver for his money." Laurel said.

"I was joking. But Laurel, I absolutely support what you're doing and I think that a lot of people will. After all, it's got humanitarian written all over it." Quentin said.

"I'm doing this because the only way things are going to get better in the Glades is if we actually try to make them better. This city has spent so long neglecting the Glades and it's fallen apart, there's a reason it's considered the worst part of the city." Laurel said.

"You're right and sadly the police don't do anything to change that and I don't have the authority to fix it." Quentin said.

"I know." Laurel said.

"So, have you given any thought about what you want to name this firm?" Quentin asked.

"I was thinking of calling it the City Necessary Resources Initiative or CNRI for short." Laurel said.

"Catchy." Quentin said.

"Yeah. Now I just need to convince Moira to fund it, though that shouldn't be hard since I am the one who controls how often she gets to see her granddaughter." Laurel said.

"Really, you're gonna play that card?" Quentin asked, a little amused.

"Oliver's prepared to do that to you too." Laurel said.

"Of course he is." Quentin said, rolling his eyes at that.

"Anyways, Oliver's up at the ranch right now with Dig and some security people to upgrade the security system. Honestly, I think it's less to keep criminals and paparazzi out and more to keep boys out when Jasmine gets old enough for them." Laurel said and Quentin laughed.

"I'll need to offer some suggestions then." Quentin said.

"And I'll need to find the weak points so I can tell Jasmine when she gets old enough." Laurel said.

"So, how much of this is to protect your house from Malcolm and how much of it is to 'protect' Jasmine from boys?" John asked Oliver as they looked around at the security upgrades they were putting in.

"Yes." was all Oliver said in response and John just chuckled.

"You know that Laurel will just teach her how to get around that right." John said.

"Of course I do. Doesn't mean I can't try." Oliver said.

"Fair enough. But seriously man, I think the forcefield is a bit of overkill." John said.

"No, that's to keep Malcolm and his goons out of here. I don't wanna risk them being allowed on this property. Especially since our base of operations will be underneath it." Oliver said.

"Fair point. What about Slade?" John asked.

"I'll worry about him when he shows his ugly mug around here and this time, if he even lays a finger on any member of my family, especially Jasmine, I'm not gonna go easy on him. I'm gonna finish what I started last time and make sure that he can't come back after I kill him." Oliver said.

"I thought you said there was good in him." John said.

"There is when he doesn't have mirakuru pumping through his veins like he does now. I'm not taking any chances of letting any version of history repeat itself. Next time Slade and I fight, I'm taking him down." Oliver said and John nodded in agreement.
