~Chapter 22~

Happy New Year!!!

Happy Reading!💚

Quick A/N: The flashbacks are in 3rd person's POV. Anirudh is reading just Ved's POV but you guys are reading about the whole drama. So, sit back and enjoy...

The night went by and the morning dawned but Ved couldn't catch an ounce of sleep. He kept tossing and turning thinking about his Priya... how she ran away from him after he confessed out of the blues, last night. He didn't mean to scare her... Not like this. Though he didn't have an elaborate plan at hand, he had an inkling: something sweet, simple, relatable, romantic and worth cherishing for life.

And now he had successfully spoiled it by acting impulsive. He just couldn't bear to hear her say "I hate you with all my heart"... It stung sharply right at the centre of his heart, and he lost control of his emotions.

As much as it ached his heart, he still thought about her well-being and that now he has successfully lost one of the most precious things in his life, their friendship... while trying to get her love. Needless to say, he was worried sick about her as he knows that her brain is her worst enemy.

But if she would've stayed a little more, listened to him a little more... He could've at least explained to her or removed her inhibitions or comforted her or told her that it's fine if she doesn't reciprocate or do anything to not let her anxieties surface... Instead, she ran away and he felt his heart getting crushed and even died a little. And now, he can't do anything than sulk here and drown in his predicaments while she suffers there.

Even at the breakfast table, she skipped it citing that she was sick. He had hoped to have her there and somehow make her feel at ease and remove the awkwardness. Their parents, especially Maa who had checked upon Deekshya, asked him what happened to her all of a sudden... but he chose to remain silent and shrugged, trying his best to conceal the truth. And for some reason, they seemed to buy it.

It was quite apparent to him that she didn't wish to face him yet. So when his father asked him to visit and drop him at Srivastava Consultancy, he agreed. And that's when Anirudh nudged him and pleaded to talk about his Management studies.

His Chote had taken his advice and attended his law school. But Anirudh has finally realised his calling and decided to drop law studies, and pursue management. It's now up to Ved to convince Papa who is still miffed with his younger son though he has discreetly noted his good behaviour in the last few days.

That's why he initiated the topic...

"Papa, I was talking to Chote the other day...", He started meekly, testing the waters by name-dropping his brother's name. His father, who was checking out his schedule for the day, replied cutting him off without even looking up, "What did he do now? He went to college, right?" irritated.

It was clear Anirudh isn't very much back into the good books, so, he has to tread in to talk carefully. "Nah, he didn't do anything, he's good... In his college, attending classes". His father nodded and went back to his documents and he took it as a signal to continue.

"So, I was talking to him and we discussed his studies and behaviour in the last few days at length. He is greatly remorseful for his actions and was apologetic for that night specifically...", He saw his father close the file upon hearing him and look at him quizzically as if asking him to stop beating around the bush.

He then explained, "Actually, he isn't interested in law studies, Papa. He went to college because I insisted to give it a chance and also he wanted to win you over. But now, he wants to pursue something else...", his voice faltered.

Dhananjay had grave deep-in-thoughts that look pasted on his face, which usually appears when he is working but it never appears in front of his children. It seemed as if he was weighing the things that his eldest has just uttered.

A few minutes passed by and neither of them said anything. Ved just couldn't read his Papa and chose to remain mum than utter something and ruin his Chote's chances.

All of a sudden, Dhananjay asked, "Which course?"

"Huh?" Ved thought he miss-heard.

"I asked which course your dear brother wants to pursue?" He quizzed with a serious tone.

"Management", He breathed out, "... He wants to study management. And...", he stooped waiting for a reaction.

Dhananjay remained passive and asked, "And?" raising his right brow.

"And he has already applied for it in two universities, one in Mumbai and another one in Delhi itself. Its merit list is expected on very short notice...", He gazed at his father to find some annoyance or even anger in his eyes ready to call it their silliness but he found none.

And now that he has spilt the beans, he didn't want to give his father any further wrong impressions. So he continued unhinged, "I know, Papa, you're pissed... super duper pissed. You might think it's a silly decision made without any thought. But you have to believe me... Anirudh has the potential to marvel in that area rather than in the legal arena even though he has inherited your wittiness. Remember, how we three planned your wedding anniversary last time... The event was truly his brainchild. Priya and I just executed the plans that he drew and helped him but the major chunk of work was done by him, much more efficiently. I'd seen his passion, Papa... And I think he can really be good at all this stuff.

I'm not saying the law will not treat him well, but I'm afraid he's not made for it. I have seen him study these past couple of days... he seems to like it but not love or enjoy it. Like the way he loves or is passionate and dedicated towards our family. And both of us know he loses interest in things that don't ignite this stuff in him. He is not like you or Priya... you guys love what you do, it's almost like a life source for you even though she has just started.

And if you're worried about him failing, then lemme tell you that he seems quite promising in this aspect. I'm saying this for a solid reason which is, he doesn't want to inherit the Srivastava fortune-"

Listening to the last line of his son, his eyes widened for the first time. And Ved knew he isn't far away from his goal, "Yes... He himself said to me that he wants to build something of his own. Life on his own, making his place in the world all by himself... He doesn't wish to use our illustrious fortune of generations, he wants to be different. Do and figure out things differently and on his own. He just doesn't see himself running the consultancy or even any law-related field".

Ved took a slightly longer look at him trying to gauge what his father is thinking but failed yet again. That's when he knew he had to use his triumph card and he didn't waste a second in doing so and left no room for Dhananjay, "And you can't deprive him of his right to be different... at least not when you let me and Priya pursue our dreams. 'Cause, that will be inequality and also you can't simply force your own desires on him in the name of Srivastava's legacy. Papa, you must-"

Dhananjay interjected loudly, "Oh my god, Ved, will you ever stop your ramblings? Or do I need to seal your mouth, kid?" shutting him up.

Once he silenced his son, he took some time to let the information just relayed to him sink in. After a few minutes of nerve-wracking silence surrounding them, he voiced out sighing, "You really thought I would do impartiality between you three... Wow!"

Ved immediately jumped in, "Papa no, I just wanted you to show the light-" but a raised hand from his father forced him to bite back. He watched his father's forehead knotting and relaxing, his lips twitching in displeasure or grief he couldn't quite point out, heavy exhales every now and then and his eyes conveying the war happening within himself. He watched his father with anticipation, hoping that his reasoning would rationale with him. He even felt sorry for putting his father through so much stress... But on the other hand, there's his brother who needs his support and for him, he would do everything.

"Fine", a soft whisper exhaled from Dhananjay breaking the heavy thickness around them and Ved's raging thoughts.

"What?" He couldn't believe his ears.

Dhananjay moved to face him and reiterated, "Fine, he can do as he pleases. If he wants to study Management and not law, he can. I'm allowing this just because of you... remember this fact". Ved didn't waste a second and leapt forward from his place in the backseat and grabbed his father's arm in a side hug, "Thank you, thank you so much, Papa! And don't worry, I'll see into it, always".

"Woah! Easy young man... Your military muscles are crushing me", He chuckled and tapped at his son's arms while Ved giggled.

Dhananjay started when their laughter subsided, "Ved when you said he intends to make a place for himself on his own and truly speaking I got sold out at that point. You really didn't need to play the impartiality card".

Ved bit his tongue and said, "I always knew you'd agree if not right now then some other time but I was actually a little apprehensive about you because of Chote's last actions and him not being in your good books and all that. That's why..."

"Son, do not take me as blind to anyone's effort... I don't show it but I do watch and note the efforts of people seeking forgiveness. And how could I not see my own son's efforts? I did... Just didn't acknowledge it so as to not make him feel proud about it.

I want the best for him, for you... and for Deekshya. You guys are my most prized possession. And I don't want any of you guys to wayward... Especially, Anirudh... 'Cause he is stubborn, he sees the world as he wishes to. When he couldn't decide on which career to choose I thought he is just slacking off and I didn't want him to waste the year. Hence, enrolled him in law school. But if he would've told me about management studies then I would've never forced him to study law. Why didn't he tell me?"

Ved thought back to the obvious reason, Anirudh's jealousy and contempt towards his... Priya. But he didn't convey this to his father. He knows better. "He must have been afraid of you... The last couple of months doesn't exactly seem to have borne a good time between you two. So, yeah..."

Dhananjay thought about the time he had gone hard on his younger lad just because he thought he was a lazy ass. "I think you're right", His lips thinned.

"But no worries, Papa. It will all be just fine now...", Ved took his father's large but ageing hands in his squeezing in reassurance. Dhananjay's eyes twinkled at his son who suddenly looked too wise for his age, "Whatever we will do without you, Ved?"

Ved pretended to think by tapping his forefinger on his chin and then winked, "I think... Just fine".

Their car pulled up as a signal went red. Just then a little girl tapped on Ved's side glasses drawing their attention. He rolled down his glass upon seeing the worn-out face filled with dirt in places save the vibrant doe eyes that immediately reminded him of Priya. She had a bunch of roses and sunflowers in her cute little hands

The little girl didn't waste a single second and pushed a beautiful red rose towards him saying, "Bhaiya... Please buy this rose for your girlfriend." He felt a pang of emptiness in his chest as he got reminded of Priya and last night's events. "It's just tuan... tuan.... tuan... thian rupees", She struggled in pronouncing it so Ved quipped in, "Twenty rupees?" And a sweet smile flashed on her face as she nodded vigorously.

Chuckling at her excitement, he said, "Okay, but I don't have any girlfriend dear..."

"Then give it to your friend or even mother or anyone", She shrugged cutely. If only he could...

That's when Dhananjay stepped in, Ved had almost forgotten his father was still present in the car, "Sweet girl, we will buy all of the bunch. Keep this..." He said and gave her a 500 rupee note. Her eyes sparkled in joy instantly, "Thank you, kind sir" and dropped the bunch of flowers into Ved's lap before running back to the footpath as the signal changed and they moved.

Ved kept looking at the bunch of flowers dumped on his lap a while ago. The last night's events flashed across his mind and he felt an immeasurable pain for not only losing his love but also driving his best friend away.

A voice from his left broke his thought, "You should talk to Deekshya..."

He immediately took a sharp turn towards his father with confusion etched on his features. Dhananjay gave him a knowing smile, "You didn't think you were only the smartest person in the room, did you?" Ved dared not open his mouth, he was unsure what to say to that.

"We are your parents, Ved. We can know everything about our children just by looking at their faces... Even the things which you'd not told yourself. Your mother and I, know that you love Deekshya".

To say he was shocked would be an understatement, but then he did underestimate his parents didn't he? He sighed defeatedly, "I was that obvious, wow!"

"Well, as a matter of fact, you were quite axiomatic with your feelings. It's a surprise my intelligent girl didn't catch it till you confessed. But I can understand".

"Okay, then you must know she doesn't share my affection quite exactly".

"I know... But what I am really interested in knowing is why are you letting go of your golden pure friendship with her and why are you letting her demons get the worst of her. We raised you better, you should handle a rejection better".

"Well, I would but if only I would've been awarded that rejection straight away..."

"Oh boy, don't tell me... Deekshya ran away without a definite answer and you didn't bother to talk to her and gave in your sorrows. WOW!"

"So what do you reckon I do?"

"Haven't you been paying heed to me, Ved? I said go talk to her... Sort this out. You guys are friends first, remember? Whatever is meant to happen will happen. Just don't ruin your present by overthinking your future or past. Go talk to your Priya".

New energy seemed to course through his veins hearing his father's words. A new hope was born out and his old flame of love reignited. He was suddenly feeling confident and motivated. He would talk to her, hear her answer. Accept it whatever it is. And they will either go back to their previous selves or embark on a new journey, whatever their future awaits. It might take some time, but he knows eventually they'll be there. He will not let go of his love or friendship without a fight or an answer he so deserved.

He would talk to her today itself. After the reunion party.

~~~
Deekshya skimmed the party place through the glass french door, which was being pushed open and closed every now and then by arriving guests, with a clear hesitancy written all over her lovely dolled-up face. Her hands were sweaty out of trepidation. She read the red-black-golden sparkly letters hung over across the hall:
"WELCOME STEPHANIANS!"
It's only seven in the evening, but the place is already abuzz with ex-students of St Stephen's Public School. She could see many known faces, from where she stood. There was a long bar setup to the left with five to six bartenders tending to the Ex-Stephanians' needs. And to the right across the bar, a DJ was stationed playing music while the rest of the place is left for people to show their moves. But there was hardly anyone on the dance floor as the evening has just begun and everyone was busy mingling, chatting and reconnecting with friends.
She had arrived alone. Anirudh, as a part of the organizing team, had reached very much earlier... probably earlier than anyone. And Ved is running late... He had gone with Papa to his office and didn't return till she left the mansion. Which was for the best, she guessed as she could seldom face him at this point let alone go anywhere with him.
Truth be told, she was least interested in this party... She just wanted to curl up into a ball on her bed and cry her heart out, which she has been doing since last night. She couldn't bring to compose herself because each time she tried to, Ved's confused face from last night haunted her. And she feared the heartbroken stature that she would've to face once she would come clean to him, it scared her. She is scared of losing their friendship and him.
She is here because of Maa, who was persistent in making her attend this reunion. Her reasons are- one, it's her first reunion party; and second, she will be getting rid of whatever is bothering her and have a gala time catching up with friends after months. Not that she had many friends like Anirudh who probably knew the whole school but the prospect of meeting her little girlies group of three-five seemed like a good enough distraction for the evening than to swell one's eyes crying.
So, she ended up here... to forget her ever-tumultuous life and drown out her sorrows for the moment. But little did she know, that this night will turn her life upside-down and have an ever-lasting impact.
She took a deep breath and let Maa's words that she'd uttered to her before lifting her spirits- "Sweetums, everything will fall into its place. It'll be alright. Cut yourself some slack tonight... and have a great time!" Pasting a slightly polite smile, she pushed open the door with a swing and it slammed behind her as she stepped ahead. Which immediately commanded the gathering's attention.
The moment her shimmery black heels hit the floor, the time seemed to have stopped abruptly or maybe it was because of the music that had suddenly tuned out. Almost everyone present in the room turned towards her and was astounded to see the unexpected entrant, Deekshya Pattanayak- the weird topper girl around whom tons of rumours float, Ved Srivastava's so-called BFF, Anirudh Srivastava's arch nemesis and beyond all an irresistible beauty with a quick wit.
And this time as well, the ethereal beauty didn't disappoint. Dressed in a shiny blood-red evening gown with a V-neck design accentuating her beauty bone, and puffed sleeves, that reached just below her knees- she managed to take breaths of men and women as well. Her lips were painted in a much darker shade than her dress, a subtle makeup but one highlighting her doe-eyes with perfection to T, her wavy curls twisted into a simple knot settled at the side of her nape with a red rose tucked in while a few tendrils managed to escape and a sweet pearl choker set adorned by her- made her look like nothing but a heavenly enchantress. After basking in her beauty, a few audible gasps resounded as people got out of their mesmerising trances that soon got coupled with murmurings.
Nobody expected to see her there alone... 'cause she never showed up without a Srivastava hovering over her back. It is understandable about the parents Srivastava and Anirudh as it's a reunion party and that younger Srivastava is an organiser, but the fact that Ved was not by her side didn't miss anyone's eyes.
Deekshya shivered a bit under close scrutiny... a dread crept up her spine and she felt something slowly and painstakingly snaking her being as she sauntered in. Her eyes began searching to catch a known face among the sea of onlookers digging holes in her and the more she saw unknowns the tighter her hands gripped her golden sequined clutch.
To her instant relief, the music suddenly tuned in and eventually in a few moments, the attention of the gathering shifted from her to something or the other. Although she could still feel eyes on her, she chose to ignore them as she was there to meet her friends and have a nice time away from any worry just like Maa advised her.
As she made her way into the crowd, she exchanged a few pleasantries with some of Ved's friends whom she knew and who were always kind to her. Some of them even complimented her and it made her feel good. But she didn't stay around them for long because all of them enquired about Ved. And for the first time ever she didn't have an answer... Of course, she knew where he was but she didn't have an answer to the question, how is he doing?
She scanned the whole place with her eyes in search of her friends, but couldn't find anyone. Neither she saw any of her teachers nor the principal- which is strange considering it's a reunion. To add to it, she could feel eyes on her constantly and it didn't make her better. Rather she heard whispers coming from a little distance away from where she was standing.
"Umm look who's here! The so-called orphan who lives in a mansion"
"Oh isn't she the one they call a murderer... She'd killed her parents, no!?"
"You got it right, babe... That's not it. She has the Srivastavas, her foster family wrapped around her pinky. So much so, they forget about Anirudh Srivastava sometimes... Such a bitch"
"I've heard, she is with Ved Srivastava all the time... Everyone has seen them being super extra comfortable with each other"
"Remember the time, she had a seizure attack in the midst of assembly..."
"Yeah, she's such an attention-seeker, I tell you"
"Hmmm, she's a topper as well hence, teacher's pet. But of course, Srivastava's fortune is just immeasurable..."
Deekshya felt her gut clenching at those vicious words, it was as if someone is forcing acid down her throat. She couldn't even bring herself to believe that these are the very words uttered by educated high-class chaps of society. And that even without knowing the truth, they're not giving her the benefit of doubt, not that she needs it. She knows that she's anything but those vile accusations... She never was or will be. It's all a series of unfortunate life events.
But the traitor tears, they never listen to us... don't they? Her eyes started stinging with traitors because she was not immune to the pain inflicted by those false vile accusations. Yet she tried hard to stop them from gushing out by counting backwards and labouring out a few deep breaths. Eventually, she composed herself in about five minutes before sauntering away from the gossip mongers to a reclusive corner.
Luckily, a waiter came towards her just in time offering several colourful refreshments and that's when she realised she is extremely parched. She took the only glass of water from the tray and gulped it down in one go. That calmed her nerves down and she felt a little at ease.
Suddenly, someone tapped her shoulders from behind making her jump and turn at lightning speed. Only to find a pair of hazel bronze eyes anchoring attention on her that belonged to the guy who's the root cause of her tumultuous relationship with her heart... Anirudh Fucking Srivastava!
She took a fleeting look at him from top to bottom and boy did he look drop-dead gorgeous in that all-black attire! In that unbuttoned ebony Armani suit with a silky shirt underneath whose first two buttons were purposely left undone showing off his shiny neckpiece dangling over his firm, toned chest- immediately it felt like the temperature rose up around her. With his sleek raven hair pulled back, striking jawline, and hands swirling his cocktail glass he looked greek-godly and an uncanny feeling clenched as well as warmed her insides.
Not that she had never seen him in party fits, of course, she did... But then it has always been a family function or event, or maybe she had never seen him in such a light before and things have changed very much now. Well at least for her...
A finger snap broke her reverie. "Where were you, Dumbo Pattanayak? What took you so long? And why aren't you picking up Maa's calls? She's been nagging me asking your whereabouts for an hour or so...", Anirudh's eyes assessed her in exasperation as he asked visibly irritable.
"Woah! Calm down, big guy! I was on my way... You know Delhi's traffic, I got stuck. And I didn't hear the ring..." Deekshya replied hastily fishing out her phone from her clutch and saw 30+ missed calls, "... Oh, it was on silent mode. My bad! I'll get back-"
She was about to call back when he interrupted her, "Don't! I already did, you're welcome", and swirled his cocktail before taking a sip. "Fine!" she couldn't help but roll her eyes... All this suave and all is great but his arrogant ass is still unbearable.
He exhaled and lifted his glass in a mock toast, "Okay then, I'll leave you to it 'cause unlike you I've got this party-"
"Oh wait-"
He was about to go his way when she stopped him. "Now, what?" He asked cocking his left brow up. "Have you seen Meera, Lily, Anushi, Reeva or Yuvika anywhere? I can't seem to...", She asked ignoring his antics but he cut her off, "You mean your nerdy judgy little friends. Am I right?"
A sarcastic smile tugged at the corner of his lilac lips seeing Deekshya glare at him. He scoffed in response, "Umm... I don't know if they've even been invited. Highly doubtful!" and pretended to think by placing his index finger under his chin.
"WHAT?" Deekshya asked in dismay, "What do you mean 'highly doubtful'? It's a reunion party, right? The school must have invited everyone... They can't leave out alumni".
"No way!!!" Anirudh exclaimed and burst into peals of laughter, "The school... Haha... Don't tell me... Oh, man! Hahaha... You seriously... Hahaha... Damn... Haha... How can the great Deekshya Pattanayak be so naive... Hahaha!"
Her brows got knitted together, "What's so funny, Anirudh? What are you even talking about?" As much as his laughter seemed enticing to her, she had other things on her hands so chose to ignore it.
It took him a few moments to gain composure. "Who invited you to this Party, Dumbo?" He asked biting back his laughter which was ready to splutter out.
She immediately replied giving him a you're-ridiculous look, "You & that Zayn did... When he came to our-", but soon realisation struck her, "Oh god! This isn't an official reunion party!" Seeing her confusion wear off he quipped in, "There it is!"
"That explains the absence of any of the staff and principal... The incessant booze, now it's all making sense", She pondered.
"Goodness! Stop being so dramatic... It's just a reunion party organized by the alumni federation. We aren't doing anything illegal here, at least not like you're wording it", He admonished her line of thoughts. She nodded hesitantly, her inhibitions apparent in her visage.
And that's when he got reminded of the caution that his mother issued: "Deekshu is in a bad place, darling. There's something that has happened between Ved and her... She's not talking about it neither is he. So she's going alone. I want you to look out for her... I know you're not really fond of her but please for my sake, do it. Just make sure she's alright tonight and let herself loose, enjoy the evening. She needs it".
Anirudh rolled his eyes, "God! Never knew I'd have to deal with this...", he murmured under his breath. She couldn't decipher it, "What are you rumbling?"
"Oh sush! Can't you stay silent for a second?" He shot back and shoved a finger on her lips to shut her up earning a deadly glare in return."Umm..." His eyes wandered behind her for a moment perusing the whole place and suddenly he exclaimed, "There... they are! Come!"
And before she could even chastise him for shutting her up like that, he grabbed her elbow tightly and whisked her away. She protested but he didn't care to pay her any heed and continued to drag her through the buzzing crowd. The more they went into the crowd, the more his grip tightened. Eventually, she gave up resisting as she realised without him she would get lost in this sea of Ex-Stephanians and also she was quite aware of their surroundings, unlike Anirudh. Many tried to greet him but he walked past them, occasionally throwing a nod or quick smile, inviting several glances towards them... After all, it's a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence to see them together.
After almost two minutes, they successfully came out of the crowd and breathed in the fresh air. "Woah! That's quite a crowd. Guess, the space isn't enough... We'll have to open the lawn area", He said panting and looking at the incoming guests.
Deekshya who was also catching up on her breath, glared at him, "You almost displaced my elbow, Jackass!" she spoke caressing her left elbow. He gave her a bored expression, "You're welcome, Princess! As you can see, without my help you...", said motioning towards the crowd, "...wouldn't have made it here...", and turned ahead again, "...to your judgy little friends!"
Deekshya's eyes shot up from her elbow to her friends- Meera, Yuvika and Lily- standing in a corner talking amongst themselves. Immediately, her eyes shone up like the thousands of stars illuminating the night sky, her elbow long forgotten, "Oh my!" She gasped. It's been months since the last time she has seen them.
Before Anirudh could even say something, she bolted right their way. He saw her jumping on her girl tribe and chuckled. They were equally delighted to see her. Hugs and kisses were shared instantly. And it looked as if they'd never parted ways... These girls!
After giving them some time, he walked to them with his trademark suave and greeted, "Hello, ladies!" donning the most gorgeous smile that usually leaves girls swooning and fawning for him. But not them!
"Well, if it isn't the jerk Srivastava!" Meera huffed in annoyance.
"Glad to see you too, Meera! Seems you've powered down Double Battery... No glasses!" He teased her. Meera stuck out her tongue in response.
"Anyways, if you'd excuse us...", Anirudh said wounding his fingers around Deekshya's wrist suddenly, "...for a bit, then I would like to steal your dear little Deekshya for a quick talk. And then I would leave your Powerpuff Nerd Girls' group to it... You know, standing here is damaging my rep already".
The Girls rolled their eyes. And Deekshya wriggled her hand from his weak hold. "You've not changed in the slightest. So full of yourself...", Yuvika threw an annoyed glance assessing him from top to bottom.
He sent a smirk at Yuvika, "Well, Yuvika, you can check me out all you want but I'm in hurry. So, chop chop, Deekshya!" and tugged at her hand again.
Lily bites back at him, "NO! You've got to talk here, in front of us" crossing her hands.
Yuvika added, "We are quite aware of the fact how much you adore Dee". Vexation dripped from her tone.
Deekshya who'd been silent until now have had enough. She jumped just in time, "Guys!!! Stop going back and forth... It's fine, he just wants to talk-", while Anirudh quipped in between, "Information passing". She gave him a bored glance and continued, "Fine! He just wants to pass on information. Not a big deal... Chill!" The trio looked hesitant but gave in after she blinked reassuringly.
She then turned to him. And he smiled mockingly, After you!" motioning to step away a bit far from the trio. She complied keeping a straight face but on the inside, she amusedly chuckled at his antics.
The moment they stepped away at a distance from where her friends can't eavesdrop she didn't hesitate to ask, "Now tell me!" crossing her hands.
"Just that whenever Bhaiya arrives, just don't forget to inform me or send him my way. Now before you ask why I'm telling you this, don't bother. We both know that no matter what happens between you two, he will be searching for you the millisecond he steps into this place... You've such a strong hold on him, after all. I don't wanna dive into that, so going back to the point. You tell me when he arrives, don't just get stuck to his side all night. I've got a few friends his and mine asking for him and a good exclusive after-party for boys that I need to inform him about. Uh, one more thing... do resolve your issues with him and put him in a good mood so that he enjoys this night. I want my brother to be happy... At every cost. And if Miss Arrogant, Self-centered Pattanayak is the one able to do it then so be it ". He finished his rant and breathed out the air he hadn't let out.
Deekshya sighed. And murmured, "Okay!" audible enough to his ears before walking back to her friends. She is okay with everything he said except for making his brother, her best friend Ved, happy. She doesn't know how to make him happy. Not anymore!
She knows what Ved wants.
Her.
And the exact actions of her that will make him happy.
If she reciprocates his feelings then it will be a betrayal to him and herself.
It won't be true.
She can't do anything except what she has decided.
Or else she will only end up hurting Ved more, in the long run.
And herself, with him.
At every other turn of life.
~~~

If Deekshya had a rupee for all the time her luck and fate has turned their backs on her, she would've been a millionaire by now.

Couple dance is arranged by pairing up people with each other. The number cards having a particular number are given to two people, randomly. And they'll have to perform with each other along with other couples at the same time. The couple that'll last the longest on the floor will be crowned the winner. It is to be started in the next 10-15 mins so that the card-bearers can find their partners. And no card-bearers were to attempt on exchanging their cards as it's a rule made by the super seniors of the 2000 batch.

And that's why she has ended up amidst the crowd away from her friends in pursuit of her pair. She is super pissed right now. She's been searching for her pair for almost 10 mins but to no avail. And with each passing second, the time of the dance is nearing stressing her more.

How she was supposed to be chilling with her friends but because of the damned number card and this foolish man, she's caught up here. She just wants to get over this and go back to her friends. She sulked internally but still looked out for her pair to her left.

"Oh for fucks sake! NOOOOO!!!"

A loud shriek resonated from her other side and she knew exactly the owner of the voice. She turned in that direction to find Anirudh standing a little away digging holes at her while having an internal battle by crossing his hands... His Hands...

He had a card.

A number card.

And the number on it was...

7.

"Seven...", she read it.

And involuntarily her glance fell on her card. It bore the same number.

7.

"Holy shit!", She couldn't help it.

But before they could even utter anything, another announcement was made. "We hope everyone has found their partners. Now, we would like to request the couples to step up to the centre and others to step back for a while and enjoy. Hurry up, guys!"

The instant the announcement was done, Anirudh stormed past her without sparing her a look to talk to somebody near the stage. She saw him arguing with a few people and that attracted a few glances towards the said commotion. She could see he was hellbent on not dancing with her and was ready to do anything for it. And it saddened her, immensely... It was a reality check for her.

She is well aware of his deep-rooted contempt, hatred and jealousy. She always knew he detested even her presence and had been bearing her for the sake of his parents. But she didn't expect him to act like that... It's just a dance, for god's sake! Can't he shake a leg with her just for a few minutes?

Sure, for a few seconds there, her heart revelled in joy. This strange coincidence of having him as her dance partner surely did make butterflies fly in her stomach. The prospect of having the extremely insufferable guy yet the man of her dreams so near to her, dancing with her, twirling, sweeping, and gliding her throughout the stage made her nervous but excited as well. She had thought she will cherish these few precious moments of having him with her for the rest of her life.

And she even dared to hope for the ignition of a little spark of adoration in him for her during the dance.

But he crushed her daydream real quick with his actions. It felt like bone-chilling cold water was repeatedly splashed on her to snap her back into reality. She felt her eyes welling up and stinging with tears up but she held it all back. She knew she was stronger than this.

Making herself stoic, she then saw him talking to Zayn, who was trying to calm him down. Much to her surprise, Zayn was successful in doing so in a matter of few moments. He then sorted out the issue on behalf of Anirudh and she saw him whispering something in Anirudh's ears. And all of a sudden, Anirudh's chocolaty brown eyes lit up. They shared a brief hug before Aniudh strode up to her.

Anirudh reached her with long strides and threw a dashing smirk before saying, "Come on milady... I believe we've got a stage to rock and a contest to win", and offered her his hand.

Deekshya didn't miss the hint of sarcasm and gave him her hands giving him a mocking smile. But on the inside, she knew that the last thing they were going to do is rock the floor, let alone win.

Approaching the stage, they found a position almost at the centre of the dance floor. There are 10-12 couples more, all ready and awaiting the music with bated breaths. Deekshya and Anirudh both took a quick scan... That's when she saw the whole crowd finally realise that the rival duo have been made to become dance partners, and they sure heard some murmurs from here and there. Every eye got affixed at them, they could feel it. While he enjoyed the attention on him, she had different things going on in her mind.

Anirudh shrugged it off but when his eyes fell on her, he saw her looking at every other thing in the place other than him. He realised she was helluva nervous and he didn't want her stupid issues to eventually ruin his prestige among the alumni due to her poor performance.

He snapped his fingers in front of her face drawing her attention to him and asked, "Dumbo, I hope, you still remember the dance lessons to not step on my feet. Or should I be concerned?" cocking his left brow.

Before she could retort with a befitting reply, he smoothly reached out and took her right hand in his left, and continued, "I might add, I've seen you waltz with Papa and Bhaiya at various parties and you do alright with them'. She couldn't help but roll her eyes at his 'alright' comment, she is fabulous. Sure, Anirudh is charming but his superiority complex is a totally different case to deal with.

He swiftly took her other arm and placed it on his right shoulder, "But you know, this is different... We don't exactly share similar thoughts or like each other. So, who knows you might find this a perfect time to get back at me", ignoring the slight trembles that he felt course through her every time there was a contact.

An evil smirk made its way upon his face as he leaned to whisper near her left ear, "And such an ill intention could end up being regretful for you as I want to win this silly contest and anything that hinders me will not be treated lightly by me" and in no time glided his free hand wrapping around her waist. Then suddenly yanked her towards himself like the wind and asked, "Do you understand, Dumbo?" making her breath hitch.

For Deekshya, all of a sudden the temperature shot up from zero to 100. Having him so close, in her personal space was already making her dizzy. But the way he purred near her ear made her senses wobbly and reminded her of how all her romance book male protagonists did this to their significant others, as she closed her eyes to bask in his musky cologne and hot breaths hitting her cheeks.

But her reverie broke when he reduced the distance between them as the music started tuning in, and she quickly gathered back her senses and masked herself to keep her emotions in check, hoping Anirudh didn't catch it.

And he didn't as his attention had been grabbed by the music.

A few notes into the music, both of their eyes widened in unison as they gazed straight at each other. "Oh my!" Deekshya softly breathed out while Anirudh groaned lightly. But he was fast to recover and jumped to action, "We are stuck, so why not make the best of it", winked before clasping her hand tightly in his.

🎵Zara Zara Behekta Hain... Mehekta Hain

Aaj Toh Mera Tan Badan... Main Pyaasi Hoon 🎵

He led her off, arm wound around her slender waist, waltzing and sweeping the dance floor with careful yet in-sync steps. She could feel his hot breaths fanning her cheeks. Their heart picked up pace as they elegantly kept gliding through other couples. Awkwardness slowly dissipated with each step they danced.

🎵Mujhe Bhar Le... Apni Baahon Mein

Hai Meri Kasam Tujhko Sanam... Door Kahin Na Ja...

Yeh Doori Kehti Hai... Paas Mere Aaja Re... 🎵

He realised she is matching him oddly well... Before this, he never had a partner who could keep up with him and that always resulted in having his foot stepped on. But Deekshya possessed a finesse and an exceptional grace to her every move.

🎵Yuhi Baras Baras... Kaali Ghata Barse

Hum Yaar Bheeg Jaaye... Iss Chaahat Ki Baarish Main🎵

Anirudh then started twirling her in circles around him. She smoothly pirouetted but missed the feel of his arm on her waist. Her breathing quickened as she spun around but before she could feel dizzy he hauled her towards him and she crashed on his hard chest.

🎵Meri Khuli Khuli Lato Ko Suljhaaye... Tu Apni Ungliyon Se

Main Toh Hoon Isi Khwaaish Main...🎵

She smelled of something sweet rosy or tuberose or jasmine... he couldn't pinpoint it, it was soft floral and exotic. But it helped him relax. For the first time, he didn't feel repulsed around her rather was comfortable. He felt the bold urge to tuck the strands that has escaped the confines of her low bun when he pulled her to him and he didn't stop himself. Slowly he swept the locks off her face and before tucking them behind her ears he twirled them around his fingers. And she couldn't help but bask in the warmth of his fingers- her reaction amused him. Maybe it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be when he got to know that she was his partner.

🎵Sardi Ki Raaton Main... Hum Soye Rahe Ek Chaadar Main

Hum Donno Tanha Ho... Na Koi Bhi Rahe Is Ghar Main🎵

Their eyes got locked with each other as they swayed along with the music gently, their bodies pressed against each other. Both felt a chill running down their spines... It was thrilling. His gaze softened when he let it wander onto her jade-black orbs where he found a storm raging, it felt like her doe-shaped eyes had so much to say but something is hindering them from baring open. And for a second there he saw guilt... maybe regret reflecting on her demeanour but then it was gone as if he had hallucinated it.

🎵Zara Zara Behekta Hain... Mehekta Hain

Aaj Toh Mera Tan Badan... Main Pyaasi Hoon 🎵

Deekshya couldn't help but gaze back into his intoxicating bronze-hued deep eyes that had crystal-clear confusion written all over them... It's so easy to read him, she mused. She loved the shape of his elongated eyes and the way his well-sculpted dense brows softly knitted in. Then realisation dawned upon her that it was her first time looking straight into his exquisite pair of windows to the soul, and possibly her last. She felt at ease when another realisation came up to her that he is patiently trying to decipher her rather than getting back at her with verbal arms and ammunition.

🎵Mujhe Bhar Le... Apni Baahon Mein

Hai Meri Kasam Tujhko Sanam... Door Kahin Na Ja...

Yeh Doori Kehti Hai... Paas Mere Aaja Re... 🎵

She felt strangely well accustomed to his arms as if she is made just to be in his arms- perfect and lovely, he wondered. He could feel her heels moving across the floor just inches away from his. He realised she is diminutive for him, he was easily towering over her. But at other times as she holds herself tall and commanding, so she comes across as haughty rather she is of perfect height for him. He is sure they make quite an exquisite dance couple.

The melody tuned in, while they kept swaying in each other's arms, slow dancing. The competition is long-forgotten by them, and the presence of people along with it. They had found a peculiar peace and comfort in this dance away from their issues and awkwardness, which Anirudh and Deekshya aren't ready to give up.

Anirudh mused loudly, "We do make a good team... And I must say, you're quite well off in waltzing, my doubts have been erased". A pleasant smile played on his lilac lips.

She looked up with a sweet smile and tugged at the corner of her dark red rose-hued petals, "Yeah, so do we... And thanks! All the credit goes to Ved by the way, he taught me after all".

The music again started picking up pace, so he led her off waltzing and twirling around in between. Twirling her in, then swiftly holding her against him with her back to him, both of their hands wound around them and crossed at the front, he swayed them a little. Anirudh then whisper and groaned, "Of course, he did! You never leave him for a second, so, not really a surprise".

🎵Zara Zara Behekta Hain... Mehekta Hain

Aaj Toh Mera Tan Badan... Main Pyaasi Hoon 🎵

She felt him shrugging his shoulders in annoyance, and her brows furrowed, "And is something wrong with that? He is my-" Before she could continue, he cut her off, "-Best friend! Hah! Believe me, I don't give a shit about that crap..."

🎵Mujhe Bhar Le... Apni Baahon Mein

Zara Zara Behekta Hain... Mehekta Hain

Zara Zara... Zara Zara... 🎵

His hold loosened and she wiggled out back to their waltzing position, with a flushed face and breathlessness, she asked, "And why is that? What wrong did I do to you now?

"Not to me! But to my brother... You've him wrapped around your pinky. Before it wasn't much apparent but now in this holiday it has multiplied to many folds", He whispered and pushed her back slightly hands locked still locked in. He spun her around and circled her himself.

🎵Taadapaye Mujhe Teri Sabhi Baatein...

Ek Baar Ay Deewane... Jhootha Hi Sahi...

Pyaar Toh Kar... 🎵

And then he yanked her back into his arms and dipped her upper body down. She started, "I... I..." but couldn't say anything as his eyes fell upon her quivering lips but soon it switched its gaze.

Their eyes met and he saw a flash of pain coursing in her jade-black doe-shaped eyes that suddenly appeared glassy, coupled with a strange emotion... something is hidden yet bare open... like she wanted it but it was forbidden to her... like longing. He blinked in confusion but as soon as he blinked her eyes turned empty, devoid of anything. Just a black bottomless sea.

🎵Hai Meri Kasam Tujhko Sanam... Door Kahin Na Ja...

Yeh Doori Kehti Hai... Paas Mere Aaja Re... 🎵

It irked him and fired up his eternal hatred that somehow took a backseat during the waltz but now it returned. And with intense passionate anger, he whisper-yelled at her face, "I hate you with all my heart, Deekshya".

🎵Aajaaa Re... Zara Zara... Mehekta Hai... Behekta Hai...

Zara Zara... 🎵

And before she could even decipher, he pulled her up and whirled her briskly and left her stranded in the centre. He walked away hurriedly and didn't bother to turn back.

A lone tear escaped its confines and glided down painstakingly slow.

She will never get his love, admiration... not even his respect. Never, ever.

She was sure the hall got abuzz with murmurs but she tuned them out, as she closed her eyes, she swiped the teardrop off her face and took in a deep breath to stabilize herself.

Suddenly, a unique warmth tingled near her hands and engulfed them. Her eyes jerked open and fell on the person she has been avoiding and running away from all day.

Ved.
