Under The Pawsteps of a Bear
I wonder what lies beneath the snow so deep;
Frozen dew forbidden to weep?
It sits in the dead blades,
Collecting icy tears amongst the glades.
I wonder why it sparkles so
As diamonds amongst the snow?
Quartz by day and sapphire by night,
Under cloaked skies it echoes winter's plight.
Maybe it has its own answers there
In the depths of the forest, under the paw steps of a bear?
Under leaves trampled down,
Covered by the snowflake's crown.
I wonder if it's pleasant to be down there
Under the paw steps of the bear?
Blanketed by the quilt each blizzard has brought,
Under each layer, the clouds have wrought.
I wonder where it all comes from
Deep in the North where ships come?
Does it travel by the crystal stream,
Icy cold from Winter's scream?
Maybe the wind brings it to us;
A gentle gust, a small push it must, as it carries the purest of dusts.
It chooses when to bring it upon the Fall's rust,
Cleansing the earth as it goes, devouring it in its lust.
