Chapter 1
Chapter 1
"Gooooooo Dragons!" Serena Thomson cheered as the cheerleaders tossed her into the air. She executed a perfect triple flip before letting herself fall back down to the arms of the waiting cheerleaders below. They caught her and lowered her back down onto the ground safely.
"I thought I told you to only do a single flip, Serena." Her cheer coach said to her, frowning with distain.
"Where's the fun in that?" Serena asked, grinning mischievously, blue eyes glittering.
"Serena Thompson, you are a handful. A talented handful, true, but a handful just the same." Serena's coach looked at her prodigy, wondering how someone so talented could have so much mischief and adventure inside of her. Serena was the Capitan, but you would never be able to tell unless you looked at her uniform. She had the special uniform with a red stripe across the waist, showing that she was the Capitan. Serena acted like a child, even though she was turning sixteen the next day. There was going to be an incredible party, and everybody was invited. That is, everybody that Serena knew. And Serena knew everybody that was important.
Serena suddenly looked down at her phone. She frowned and looked at her friends. "Hey, coach? Guys? I've got to go. I have to babysit my sister." Serena made a disgusted face. "My sister is probably going to want me to play with one of her silly new toys." She was lying. Her sister always got the best toys to play with. Once she got a motor scooter, another time she got a big wheel, and she had also gotten a Kinect from X box. Her sister was thirteen, and nothing could keep her occupied for long. Serena lied about her sister Kandy so that no one would try to take advantage of her.
"That's okay, Serena. Just try not to die of boredom, if you need us to, we could help you come up with an excuse so you won't have to do it." Her friend Rebecca volunteered.
"No thanks, Rebecca. I'll survive. I got to go. See you tomorrow." She waved goodbye to all her friends and walked over to the parking lot where her motorcycle was parked. She pulled on her leather jacket that she had hung on the handlebars and jumped onto the bike. Serena pulled on her helmet, put the key in the ignition, and set off. She cruised down the road until she pulled up to a large gate. Serena punched in the combination and the gate opened. She drove through the gate into a large neighborhood full of large houses. She pulled her bike into one of the biggest houses and pulled the key out of the ignition. Serena swung her leg back over the bike and pulled off her helmet. She walked up to the door, unlocked it, and ducked as she walked in.
"Incoming!" Kandy yelled as she sprinted after the wayward helicopter. "Oh, it's just you Serena."
"I'm so glad I'm 'just' me. Serena, your older sister who you almost killed with a helicopter. What's the jail time for that these days?"
"I can't go to jail smart-aleck, I'm too young. And I didn't mean to almost kill you, I just don't know how to work the new toy mum and daddy got me." Kandy pouted, crossing her arms.
"Well, I guess I can bail you out if you let me have a go at that helicopter!" Serena grabbed the controller out of her sister's hand. She made the copter rise and swerve towards Kandy.
"Hey! Don't do that!" Kandy yelled running from the toy. "I'm innocent! I'm innocent!"
"Payback time!" Serena yelled, giggling as she chased her sister around the house, controller in hand. They did that for quite some time, darting into halls, running into rooms, and rigging traps on all the staircases. They had tons of fun. Until Kandy decided to sneak up on her and grab the controller. She succeeded, yanking it out of her sister's hands. She made it turn away from her and towards her sister.
"Now it's MY turn for payback!" Kandy yelled, giggling as the toy swerved towards Serena.
"Kandy! What are you doing?!? You can't control that thing yet!" Serena yelled as she darted around, trying to avoid the copter.
"Okay, okay. I'll bring it down." Kandy said reluctantly, trying to land the toy. She couldn't seem to get it landed. It continued to swerve around Serena, getting closer and closer to her head.
"Kandy, land that copter!" Serena cried.
"I'm trying!" Kandy yelled back
"Try harder!" Serena screamed. At that moment, the copter sailed at her head. Without enough time to duck, she brought her hands to her face, trying to protect it. Suddenly, there was a gust of wind and the copter floated gently to the ground.
"Hey, I got it to land!" Kandy shouted in joy.
"Maybe we should sit down and watch some TV until Addi Jane gets here." Serena suggested.
"Good idea. I think Mighty Med is on." Kandy said cheerfully.
"Yeah... I think it is." Serena said, walking into the living room. They watched Mighty Med for a while, until they heard a key turning in the lock.
"I'm home!" Addi Jane said. "What did I miss? Did you have fun today, guys?"
"Addi Jane! You're home!" Kandy cried out excitedly. Addi Jane was in college and rarely came home for a visit. But every time she did, they had loads of fun.
"Yeah, I am! You look so much taller, Kandy! By a whole foot!" Kandy beamed with pride. "And Serena! You're almost a woman! Sixteen tomorrow. Seems like only yesterday you were running around chasing the cat with a rope in your hand. You were trying to make the cat bungee- Jump." Addi Jane said with a laugh.
"Yeah... those were fun times." Serena said with a tight smile. "Hey, Kandy, would you mind going outside to practice steering that helicopter? I need to talk to A.J. for a minute. 'Kay?"
"Yeah, sure Serena! I do need the practice. Later A.J.!" Kandy said as she ran into the backyard, toy copter in hand.
"So, Serena. What did you want to talk to me about?" A.J. asked suspiciously.
"Well, for starters, it's not that I'm not ecstatic that you're here or anything, but why ARE you here? You think Kandy is annoying, so you're not here for Kandy, and you don't care about my birthday tomorrow, so you're not here for me. I know you're using my birthday as an excuse, but why are you actually here?"
"Okay, you got me. I need to borrow money from Mum and Daddy."
"Why? For college? Because I thought you had a scholarship. And last time I checked, you don't need money when you have a scholarship." Serena replied. "I don't think you actually need the money for college."
"Well, you see, I don't have a scholarship anymore." A.J. blurted out. "I told Mum and Daddy that I had gotten a full scholarship, when the truth was, I only got a partial scholarship. They were so proud of me that I couldn't tell them. I thought that I would go to TCU until my scholarship ran out, and then I would get the money from Mum and Daddy. I didn't think that I would need the money so soon. And I actually do care about you and Kandy. I came now because I wanted to see you turn sixteen in person. Not from a video on Facebook. It's a big deal in our family when someone turns sixteen. Plus I hear there's quite an invite list." A.J. said, winking.
"Yeah, well... I don't think it will compare to any of your parties." Serena replied modestly.
"Are you kidding me? You got the Autumn family to come! I tried my hardest, but they would never come to my parties. How did you do it? Blackmail? Bribery?" A.J. guessed.
"No! I just sent them an invitation, silly-Billy!" Serena replied, laughing.
"I'm glad I could be here for the party, Serena. And I know we haven't been the best of friends, but I'm here now. Let's plan this party together. One last time." A.J. asked, it was obvious that she was sorry about all that had happened when they were younger.
"I would love to, but how do I know that you won't ruin this for me?" Serena asked, hesitant to accept the offer.
"Because, I'm twenty years old now. I'm more responsible. I'm not the reckless, jealous teenager I was."
Serena thought it over, and decided to accept. "All right. I trust you. Partner." A.J. smiled with relief.
"I'm glad we can work together. And start over."
"Me to." Serena smiled. Then she threw her arms around her sister. A.J. wasn't expecting that, but she put her arms around Serena, too. They stood there like that for a while, until A.J. pulled away from Serena.
"Well, I'd better go unpa-" suddenly there was a loud crash on the back window.
"Oops!" Kandy yelled as she looked in from the large hole in the window. "My bad!" Serena and A.J. looked at each other, and burst out laughing.
"What?" Kandy asked, looking at her sisters, confused. "What's so funny?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing." Serena said, gasping for breath. "I just was thinking about what will happen when Mum and Daddy get home and see this."
"Good point. You get the broom and I'll go call the window repair man. Do we still have him on speed-dial? Or did we stop needing it?"
"No. We still have Steve on speed-dial. And we still need it. Just not for me anymore. Now we need it for Kandy." Serena replied.
"It doesn't matter I'll go call him while you sweep up the glass. And, Kandy, don't go near it. Please!" A.J. said as she ran towards the wall phone.
"You heard the girl! Why don't you go up to your room while I get the broom?" Serena said to Kandy.
"Hey! That rhymed!" Kandy giggled.
"It was pretty well timed."
"You did it again!"
"What do you say, should we put the glass in a bin?"
"Okay, stop."
"Who said you were the one on top?"
"Cut it out. Or... I'll call the cops!"
"We're done."
"I figured."
"Now, go up to your room." Serena said, glad she didn't have to try to keep Kandy laughing.
"Fine. But only because I don't want to get cut." Kandy pouted as she stomped up the stairs. Serena shook her head as she walked down the hall, maneuvering around the glass on the floor. She walked to the broom closet and opened it up, to find that all the cleaning supplies fell out onto the floor in a messy pile with a loud clattering sound.
"Oh no. Not now!" Serena moaned. She didn't have time to clean it all up. She detangled all the rags and mops from the broom. She stuffed the cleaning supplies back in the closet with one hand, and held the broom in the other. She finally closed the closet and sank back against the door. Serena took a deep breath and stood up, walking over to the glass, being careful where she stepped. Serena began to sweep. She could hear A.J. talking to Steve in the kitchen, and she let herself drift off into a daydream.
She wasrunning through a forest, with birdschirping all around her. She jumped over a log with an elf running beside her.She glanced back fearfully, running faster when she saw an arrow whiz by herhead. She heard someone call her name over and over again. She slowed down alittle, to see who was calling her, and the elf shouted at her to tell her torun faster. She started running again, dodging the arrows that were being shotat her. She suddenly felt something hit her back with a loud THUNK! She lookedbehind her to find an arrow sticking out of her back. She looked at the elfbeside her, and tried to smile. She sank down to the ground. Everything aroundher grew dark, and she saw a strange, handsome face of a nineteen year old boystaring down at her with worry before she blacked out
