goodbye
Shouting brought me from the slumber my fall forced me into. It was Poe. He was screaming my name, yelling, "Is Enna on here? Enna!" I kept asking, where is here? But no words came from my mouth. I couldn't open my eyes. I was exhausted.
"Enna!" he breathed, straight in my ear. I felt him collapse on top of me, hugging on my torso. He cradled me in his loving arms. "Oh, En... I heard your screaming, your earpiece cut out, and I..."
"I thought I'd give you a nice scare," I slurred.
"It's not funny."
I rubbed at my eyes, forcing them to open. I watched medics grab Finn from the floor of the Falcon. Rey spared me a fast glance before she jogged out after him worriedly.
"Do she need medical attention?" asked a medic.
"Do you?" asked Poe.
"I'll be fine," I muttered.
Poe lifted me from the chair I was slumped in. He carried me into the console room, where BB-8 eagerly awaited our return. He rolled in circles around us when he saw.
"Hi, BB-8, hi. How are you?" I asked, patting his head lightly.
The droid beeped a happy response.
At the sound of another beep, a different tone than his, I turned. From out of the shadows rolled R2-D2 in all of his glory. C-3PO wobbled behind him excitedly.
"General, General, R2 would like to show you something," he chimed.
General Leia Organa and Rey joined the circle.
R2-D2 projected a map of the solar systems into the air. At the bottom of the hologram, an uneven shape was gone. Automatically, having seen it before, I knew what the missing puzzle piece was. I grabbed it from the center console, BB-8 rolled to me, and I shoved it into a port he extended for me. He projected the missing piece and fit it inside the map R2 displayed.
"The map's complete," breathed Rey.
"Luke," smiled General Organa.
"The Jedi temple," I whispered.
"Dameron, give the missing piece to R2. He'll be going with Rey and Enna," ordered General Organa.
"Enna?" repeated Rey. "But she's already a Jedi."
"About that..." I trailed off.
"I'm lost," said Rey.
"As am I. That's why we need to go to him. Ask him to teach us the ways of the Force," I explained. "When are we heading out?"
"Uh... We'll leave in twenty," said Rey, still entirely confused by me.
I split from the group. Poe trailed behind me. He pouted as I changed into a clean outfit. He sighed repeatedly, his grip on my hand tight, as we trudged to the Falcon. We came to a stop outside of the ramp.
I was the first to speak. "This is, what, the fifth time we've stood here? Outside of a plane, one of us leaving..."
"And somehow this one hurts more than all the others," mumbled Poe.
"I'd like to thank you for believing in me. You have since the moment we met, and it's never faltered once, not even with the lightning," I said.
Poe cupped my face. His head tilted slightly as he smiled at me. "Sometimes, you just need someone to tell you that you're not as terrible as you think you are."
"I'll never be able to repay you for everything you've done."
"But I know how you can start."
I raised my brow, chuckling. "You forget how long I've known you, Poe Dameron. I've seen you woo a few people in our time together. I will not be one of them."
"A kiss is my favorite gesture of gratitude," he chimed.
"My problem doesn't lie with sharing a kiss with you. It lies with the fact that you wish it to be something meaningful between us," I told him.
"So, basically, you're saying you wouldn't mind kissing me?"
"Maybe one day," I gave in.
"Today is as good a day as any."
"I shouldn't. I'm leaving here. I'm leaving you."
"Absence makes the heart grow fonder."
"Perhaps," I smiled. I settled the jokes. "Poe, my absence this time is going to finally make me a safe person to be around."
"I'm proud of you for doing this. Know that," he said honestly.
"I do. You be safe here, all right? No reckless moves while I'm away."
"Come on, En. You know I can't promise that," he laughed. Poe embraced me in a tight, long hug. "You're going to be one hell of a Jedi, pretty girl."
"I can only hope," I agreed.
I waited for him to let go. I took one step from him.
"I'm already missing you," he called after me.
"It was one step," I chuckled.
"One step, a trillion... Either way, my heart aches, knowing I won't know when I'll see you again."
"Makes for one hell of a surprise," I said optimistically, "I'll find you, Poe Dameron. This isn't the last time we'll meet."
I turned my back. Not staring at his face made it easier to walk away, yet, still, I felt as though it wasn't goodbye. It wasn't enough. Something was missing. My pace slowed by itself. Soon, I stopped entirely. I turned again.
Poe was already running to me. "Yeah, sorry, I can't let you leave without doing it," he huffed in response to my confused face. He took my face in his hands, I grabbed his forearms, and he brought my lips to his.
That was it. His lips were what I was missing.
"Enna," said Rey, causing Poe and I to spring apart. She approached from our side, a tiny smirk on her lips. "Are you coming, or not?"
"Yeah, one second," I said.
Rey slipped past Poe and I into the Falcon.
"All right. I have to leave for real this time," I told Poe.
He kissed my lips lightly again. "Think of me, although not too much, because you have to focus on your training. If you fail, I won't accept you back as a friend."
"Supportive," I noted.
"Make me proud, pretty girl."
I smiled. I hopped up the ramp. At the top, one hand hovering over the switch and the other blowing a kiss to him, I called, "May the Force be with you."
"And also with you," agreed Poe.
