16. Bunch of Roses
Anna was busy cleaning the table when her mother came and stood in front of her.
"Anna!" Sofia called her softly. Anna looked up to her and hummed softly in reply. "Your Aunt Dephanie called."
"Really! Is she going out of town?" Anna asked amusedly to which her mother nodded at her. "And she wants somebody to look after the orphanage when she's away." Sofia nodded again. "For how many days?"
"Two!"
"Alright, I'll go then." She smiled happily. "It's been months I didn't meet the kids."
"When is she leaving?"
"Tonight,"
"Well, I have to go now then."
"You want me to drop you!"
"No mom, that's a long ride. I'll go home and pack some stuff and take the bus." Anna informed with a grin. "But what about the delivery?"
"Don't worry, there won't be—"
"Any delivery for two days." Anna completed.
Anna went home and quickly packed some clothes and headed out for the bus stop. On her way, she called her aunt and informed her about her arrival. While waiting for the bus, she saw Leo driving by on the road. She quickly turned and hid from him. And as soon as his car passed, she released a deep breath and stared at the far back of his car. Then she sat on the bench and took out her earpiece to listen to music and a book from her bag to read while waiting for the bus to arrive. After listening and reading for some minutes, she felt a shadow hovering upon her. And as her eyes looked up, she quickly frowned over at the sight of Leo.
"What're you doing here?" she said plugging out her earpiece.
"Going somewhere?" He ignored her question and asked.
"Yes!"
"Where?"
"Somewhere only I know." She retorted.
"You're going to Fairfield beach road." He said glancing up at the screen that was displaying the destination. "That's a long way."
"I know. What are you doing here?" Anna crossed her arms over her chest and ask-deadpanned.
"I saw you!"
"So!"
"Nothing! Are you planning to stay the night there?"
"None of your business."
"Are you running away from home?" He asked as he amusedly glanced at her backpack beside her.
"Why don't you just leave me alone?" She cried in exasperation. "Yesterday you said so yourself that we should stop crossing the path, why did you come here? You should have just ignored me and drive away." She scowled.
"Yesterday was different and today is different." He deadpanned.
"You're so complicated!"
Then suddenly Leo laughs quietly glancing up the screen. "Is that your bus no.?" Anna got up from the bench and stood beside him and looked up at the screen.
BUS NO. 6677 HAS BEEN DELAYED FOR ONE HOUR.
"What the!" She sighed in complete annoyance.
"I'm heading towards that way if you want you can join me or you can wait for an hour for the bus to arrive." Leo offered her. She glanced at her watch and read four-thirty. The ride to Fairfield beach road from here is one and half hour and her aunt leave in two hours. If she waits for an hour for the bus, she won't be seeing her aunt.
"I'll take the ride with you." She answered quietly, not looking up to him.
Leo was so happy to hear that but he didn't show it, his decision to stay away from her was long abandoned. No matter how much he tried to avoid her and drive away, he couldn't do it—he couldn't stop himself from going to her. He took her backpack and strolled towards his car and Anna quietly followed him behind. He placed her backpack at the backseat and opened the car door for her.
"Thank you," she said quietly but sincerely before hopping on the passenger seat.
"My pleasure," he smiled at her before closing the car door.
"You're so complicated!" Anna sighed quietly. Leo came around and settled on the driver's seat. He started the engine and drive away. After ten minutes of the silent drive, Leo spoke up breaking the silence.
"I heard from Roberto. The Sylvester's men were after you."
"I'm gonna have another sleepless night tonight," Anna muttered under her breath.
"Why?" And Leo heard her clearly. "Are you suffering from insomnia?"
"No—" she said and paused for some seconds before continuing, "Whenever I witness a murder, I lost my sleep."
"You saw Roberto killing those men!" and she hummed in reply. Leo ran a hand over his hair and stared at the road.
"He saved my life and I'm very grateful to him," Anna said glancing at him.
"I am grateful to him as well for saving you." He muttered under his breath.
"What!" Anna exclaimed and looked at him.
"Nothing." He said, his eyes fixed at the road. Anna tried to look away to the other side but her eyes involuntarily stared at his perfect side view. Her eyes landed on his jaw and saw his moustached growing a little.
"You need to shave." She blurted out and smiled absentmindedly at him. Leo frowned his brows and glanced at her and bit back a smile. She quickly looked away from him and turned to the other side and facepalmed.
Come to your sense, Anna. She chided inwardly to her own.
"Thanks for reminding me. I always forget to do so." Leo said amusedly. Anna remove her hands from her face and straightened up on her seat.
"Do you have any music?" She asked and Leo hummed in reply. "Let's see what kind of music does a mafia man like you listen to—" she said and at the same time, tapped on the audio player and soon 'Ever enough by Rocket to the moon' played on the beat. "Love songs?" she glanced at him amusedly. "Didn't take you for a guy to listen to romantic love songs!"
"You don't know me!" he stated as a matter of fact.
"Then let me know you." She blurted out again and quickly covered her mouth with her hands. Leo couldn't help but chuckle at her.
"It will be my pleasure." He whispered softly to himself.
Leo pulled over slowly and stopped the car at the gas station.
"My buddy needs to feed." He said and got off from the car. He went to the man at service and told him to fill his car.
Anna stay put at her position and stared through the car window. Then her eyes suddenly fell on a little girl who was selling roses from car to car. She felt sad for the little girl as nobody was buying her roses and they just chased her away. And as she was about to get down and go towards the little girl, Leo opened the car door and settled on the driver's seat.
"You look sad, what happened?" Leo asked when he noticed her gloomy face.
"Look at the little girl!" she gestured to her sides. "Nobody is buying her roses." She added sadly. "Can you wait for a minute? I'll quickly go and buy her roses and come." She asked softly.
"Wait here! I'll be back soon." Leo said and got off from the car. Anna's eyes watched him as he came around and strolled towards the little girl. Leo leaned down to her level and smiled warmly at her.
"Hey, princess, how much is it?"
"One dollar per rose." The little girl answered.
"I'll take all, how much will it be?"
"There are twenty roses in total. Twenty dollars, Sir."
"What do your parents do?"
"My mother is a florist and I'm helping her in selling her flowers."
"That's very good of you, Princess."
"That's our florist shop." The little girl pointed at her left across the street, showing him the shop full of various flowers.
"You have a beautiful shop, Princess," he smiled at her and reached for his wallet in his back pocket and took out all his cash which was about thousands of dollars and gave it to the little girl.
"Sir, it's only twenty dollars." The little girl said innocently and was reluctant to take the money.
"Keep it and use it wisely." He said softly.
"Thank you so much, Sir." She accepted the money and hugged him tightly. "You have a very beautiful wife, Sir." The little girl said glancing towards Anna and handed him the bunch of roses.
"Thank you." He took the roses and the little girl happily ran towards her store. He chuckled softly staring at the back of the little girl and turned away towards his car. He came around and settle on the driver's seat.
"This is for the most beautiful girl I've ever met," Leo said and smiled wolfishly at her as he extended the roses towards Anna. Anna was trying her best not to show any kind of emotions.
"You bought it, you keep it. Why are you giving it to me?"
"What will I do with these roses? I just bought it to help the little girl."
"You have a soft corner for needy people." Anna cooed softly.
"I'm not a monster." He rolled his eyes over.
"I doubt." Anna gave him an amused smile.
"I don't know what to do with these roses so you take it."
"You can give it to the woman you like," Anna said.
"You're the only woman I like and I'm giving it to you." He said straight looking into her eyes. Suddenly Anna felt discomfort under his intense stare, blood rushes into her cheeks and heartbeats went irrational and she quickly looked away from him. Leo bit back a smile and placed the flowers on her lap. "You're welcome."
"Thank you," she said quietly, she took the roses with one hand while her other hand involuntarily tugged some strands of hair behind her ear.
It was already dark by the time they reach the orphanage. Anna got off from the car and came around beside the driver's side. Leo also got off from the car and stood tall in front of her.
"The Heart's Home, what place is it?" he asked glancing at the building.
"It's an Orphanage. My aunt runs this place. She is leaving tonight for some work and she'll be returning after two days and I'm here to look after her Orphanage while she's away." She explained and looked up at him. "Thank you so much for the ride and for the roses as well, Leo." She said sincerely.
"No problem. I'll be leaving now. Take care of yourself and be careful." Leo said and reluctantly turned away from her. He was afraid that if he turns towards her, he wouldn't be able to control himself from going to her. Without glancing at her, he started the engine and drove off.
Anna gave one last glance on the road before strolling towards the house. She stood at the door and pressed on the doorbell. Soon her aunt received the door and opened it.
"Anna dear, you're finally here," Dephanie said softly and pulled her into a hug. "Oh those roses are lovely, did he gave you?" her aunt gave her an amused smile to which she frowned. "I saw both of you from upstairs."
"Oh, he's just a friend. He had some work here so we came here together." Anna said.
"Okay, I'll let you slide this time coz I'm getting late for my flight. Thank you so much for coming. I have already organized your room. The kids had their dinner just now and they're taking rest in their dorms. I'll see you after two days, dear. Bye-bye."
"Safe journey, Aunt." She said and waved at her. She went upstairs and strolled inside her room. She took a quick shower and change into a comfortable t-shirt and pyjama. Then she decided to meet the kids and strolled towards the girls' dormitory.
She stood by the door and watched the girls getting busy in their own business. "Knock, Knock!" she cooed softly and at once, all the girls turned and squeal widely in happiness and came running towards her.
"Anna!" They all said in unison. After spending good forty minutes with the girls, she decided to let them go to sleep.
"Okay now, everyone off to bed."
"Yes, Anna."
"Goodnight, my little princess."
"Goodnight, my queen."
She switched off the light of the dorm and strolled towards the boys' dormitory. And as she entered, she saw that all of them were sound asleep.
"Anna, is that you?" A baby boy said.
"Yes, it's me, Lauren. You're still awake." She said softly and strolled towards him and sat beside him on the bed.
"I was waiting for you for the whole day. Mother told us that you are coming to stay with us."
"Yes, I am here now."
"I miss you so much, we all did."
"I miss you all so much as well, that's why I'm here." She placed a soft kiss on his cheek. "Okay now, go to sleep, dear. We'll talk in the morning. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Anna."
Anna placed a kissed on his forehead and strolled towards the door. She switched off the light and silently walked away from the dorm. She retrieved back to her room and glanced at the watch. It was already 10:00 pm. Then suddenly her phone started vibrating on the nightstand, making her startled and jerked up an inch. She fetched her cellphone and stared at the screen. It was an unknown number calling her.
"Hello!"
"Anna!" she heard a familiar voice saying her name under panting and suddenly waves of worry washed over him and she gasped loudly.
"Leo!"
"Open-the-door!"
Always Smile,
Happy virus.
