Chapter - 23

Arav

Confession time.

"You sure you wanna know?" I asked her.

"Of course I do. Why would I ask otherwise?" She frowned.

"Fine. The reason I became a super cop and the I reason I never contacted you since our last meeting, was because, because of the promise I made to you. That day I investigated the forest as I promised you. What I found, changed my life."

"What did you see, Arav?" She asked inching closer to me. I could practically smell her intoxicating perfume.

I started explaining how I went into the forest alone to search for the proofs she required.

"When I was about to go back I finally heard the howling you mentioned. And it grew. I followed the sound and in the darkness of the night I bumped into something. That something was the rear of an animal. A wolf."

So, Sameera was right, eh.

"The wolf was about to turn to find me, it already felt my presence. But then more howling came from the opposite direction. I took the chance to run but I couldn't make far away. Before I could escape, other werewolves arrived. Ansh came with his pack soldiers to get the rogue wolf I bumped into. Though I came to know of their identities and the reason of their fight later. I saw a dozen wolves lead by the black wolf you described to me. I knew you were speaking the truth. And I imagined how happy you would be to know this. But for that I had to escape safely, with proof."

"So I took out my phone and recorded the fight. The pack of wolves tried to attack the lone wolf altogether, but the bigger wolf, which I later learned was their alpha, I mean Ansh, signalled for them to stop. He came forward and kept howling for a long time, and to my utter shock, he and that lone wolf transformed into their human forms. I nearly dropped my phone for a split second."

"Then they talked about something which I wasn't able to hear, but they mostly seemed to be quarreling. Then the lone wolf and the Alpha wolf changed back to wolf forms and a fight broke out between them. The fight lasted for about 5 minutes and the lone wolf was already on the verge of losing, when he distracted the Alpha and ran for his dear life. The pack chased him. I saved the recording and as on cue my phone's battery died. I took the opportunity to escape the freaky forest full of freaky werewolves." I remember running at full speed not caring who or what i could bump into.

"When I reached near the main road, I saw my senior officer's Jeep parked at a walking distance. I went towards his Jeep and greeted him. He was astonished to find me there but he offered me a ride first, without any questions. When we reached the police station he led me into his chamber and started asking questions. I told him about my frightful experience and showed him the video. He asked me what I was doing in the forest so late to which I said a local couple complained about having seen a bear in the forest and I investigated on their request."

"Why didn't you tell him about me?" Sameera asked, interrupting me in the middle.

"I don't know. I mean, I didn't want him to find out about your involvement. I thought that could jeopardize your job. So I thought it's better if I didn't mention you."

She seemed pleased with my answer cause I saw the smile that stretched over her face. That relieved me.

"Now please don't interrupt until I finish this. I am not very good at confessions." I requested her to which she gave a simple nod.

"After watching the whole video, he deleted the video, and don't interrupt me now. I can see the change in your expression but listen to me first." She pressed her right index finger on her lips.

For a second, envy rose in my heart for her finger resting so close to those plum like lips. Not to get sidetracked, I shook my head lightly shrugging unwelcome emotion aside.

"I was shocked the same way as you are, actually even more. I asked him as to why he deleted the only proof I endangered my life for. But then he chuckled and agreed he already knew about the existence of this werewolf pack, 'The Sea Moon pack' as he referred to it. That was a shocking revelation. But then he returned me my phone and looked towards me with eyes full of expectations. What he said next changed my life forever.

"Arav, you are a very promising police officer. You are skilled, intelligent, skeptic, selfless, compassionate, good at keeping secrets and most importantly, you are very loyal and honest. That's a rare combination these days. Hence, I wanted to recommend your name for promotion."

Why is he trying to change the subject?

"Promotion? How is this matter and my promotion related? I don't understand sir." I said for him to explain his actions a minute earlier.

"It's more like an offer, Arav. The defence sector is very vast and is divided into many branches, different divisions and sub-divisions. The promotion I am offering you requires for your transfer from you current branch of operations to another branch of operations. I thought I would wait for a while before mentioning this promotion offer to you, but looking at the circumstances, I feel this is the correct time, my boy."

"I get it. You want me to shut my mouth up. You are bribing me so that I would keep my mouth shut. You want to suppress this incident. Do you have any idea how dangerous that could be, sir." I was basically shouting at him, which is quite unusual for me.

"See, very honest. But keep the attitude for later. I am not bribing you. I have better ways to get you off this mess, if I want to. But you see, that's the thing, Arav. I want you to enter this mess further. I want you to be a part of this world, to clean up the mess." His words flew over my head.

I wasn't expecting such turn of events.

"I don't understand what you mean, Sir." I said confused at his words.

"What you saw today was only an aspect of the world I want you to be a part of. Those pupils you saw were werewolves. The ones that appear in several supernatural fantasy works. But they are as real as you and me. So are other Supernaturals, such as vampires, witches, fairies, ghosts, shifters etc. All of them are as real as the human race itself. The branch I want to promote you to deals with them, just like we deal with humans. I know this sounds absurd, but you can't deny your own eyes, now can you? You saw everything. You even had the proof."

"Which you just deleted. That quite doesn't make sense. If you want me to be a part of this, then why did you delete the only thing that proves their presence?" I asked. He is making me confused with every passing minute.

"Because that could have spilled the beans at some point. These supernatural races have been inhabiting this earth since ages. Why do you think people still consider them myth and fantasy? Because it's very crucial to keep their existence a secret from the vast human race to avoid unwanted and severe consequences."

The typical hide and seek rule.

"The supernatural races are powerful than humans, but have very less population than the human race. And it's not that human race accepts these weirdly powerful creatures into their world very well. The history holds evidence to that. Example for the Salem witch trials. And many supernatural races aren't fond of the human race either. In fact, enemy lines also exists among the different supernatural races. Hence, it's really crucial to take necessary steps in order to avoid bad consequences. War to be exact."

Wow.

"Hence, a special branch of police is appointed, called the Super Cops, who deal with these supernatural races to prevent unnecessary destructive and criminal activities. Mostly the supernatural races are appointed as Super Cops, but humans are an inevitable and vast population of the field of our operations. So, we try to recruit enough human officers who are deserving and are ready to be a part of this hidden world." He concluded.

"And you want to appoint me as a Super Cop cause you think I am deserving and qualified, right?" He simply nodded to my conclusion derived from this whole discussion.

"Okay. So are you also a Super Cop?" I asked curiously.

"Yes, I am a super cop. And I am a hundred percent human, I assure you. I am currently on a quest to find new recruits. You caught my eye from the first day. But I wanted to wait for a while longer before I dropped the bomb on you. But you dropped the bomb on me before I could. So here is my offer, Arav. Do you accept to serve your nation, your mother earth, as a Super Cop, or are you satisfied with your current field of operations?" He asked.

After a lot of thinking I decided to take my leave for the day and sort out all the information overload at my house before I could respond to his offer.

"And the next day, I woke up late, behaved like a snail all day. It wasn't before lunch hours that I let him know my answer. Which was obviously 'Yes'. I still can't quite figure out why I did that? But I don't regret my decision. It was an act of impulse on my part though. Now that I think of it, the offer of serving the whole world was better than being confined to my nation only." Just what I have wanted to do all my life. Protect others.

"Then I went on a month long special training program to qualify as a Super Cop. And here I am on my first case confessing my impulsive decision to you so that I could convince you to consent to the memory erasal process so that you will forget about ever meeting me." I said gloomily.

"Never thought this day would come. I never wanted you to forget me. I would have showed up at your doorstep eventually with a convincing enough lie about my promotion, to keep you far away from this hidden supernatural realm. But I guess, I am late. So, what do you say?" I asked her unsure of what I had just said. Do I really want her to forget me?

"I am happy for you Arav. And I wish you success in your future missions. But failing on your first mission won't be a good start of a promising career. So, let's go in before I change my mind." She said taking my left palm between her hands.

She got up from her seat and spoke, "Wait, you agree with this? I mean, moments ago you were against it. And now you have answers to all your queries. Then why do you wanna forget everything?" I questioned. Though I shouldn't. But her sudden change of decision took me by surprise.

"Yes, I have answers to everything. But all these supernatural stuff are too much for me. My life is already very much weird to handle any more weirdness. Plus I have got my career to focus on. So, it's better if I forget all this." She explained.

"What weirdness do you already have?" I asked out of curiosity.

"That's a story for another day. For now I just wanna go with this decision." She said smiling at me and turned to leave.

"Sameera" I called her name from quiet a distance and she stopped to look towards me.

"Joseph won't completely erase your memories of the past few weeks. He will only erase that part of your memory that relates to this supernatural world, including me. But just so you know, even if you forget me, I won't leave you alone. We will still be friends. It will be a new beginning for us. Except for the weird supernatural part."

She smiled wider and spoke, "Of course. I will need a ride home as I already sent Satish back and I am not sharing a ride with that duplicate wolverine."

She entered the house giggling. I followed after her, grinning widely.

"She consented for the memory wipe. Come on." I informed my partner who was discussing something with the Alpha and the Beta.

He came signaled for Sameera to sit on the couch and relax. Then he took out his magic wand which he uses at only dire situations, as I am told.

He silently chanted some spell and took out a bottle filled with some white fluid. He dipped the tip of his wand in that fluid and touched the tip with Sameera's forehead. Utter silence surrounded the environment.

Sameera's eyes closed itself and opened gradually after Joseph removed his wand from her forehead and put it somewhere in his belt pocket which was the size that could only hold in a cell phone. Warlock magic I tell you. Can fit big stuff in small spaces.

Then Sameera's eyes opened wide as saucers and focused on me. Did she really forget everything?
