Ep 5: The Wrath of Kalmaar (Kalamari)

**please keep comments spoiler free, as this is my first time watching this season**

Plot.

~Overall plot. Prince Kalamari introduces himself, and reveals that he is looking for the Storm Amulet. He is called in to meet his father (King Trimaar). Trimaar says that Kalamari shouldn't be sinking ships. Kalamari denies the accusation. Nya and Maya escape their bonds, master lethal-not-lethal weapons in about thirty seconds, hop in their mechs, and start getting chased by sharks. Meanwhile, Jay recharges the battery and demands the sub go after Nya.

~Again, the plot has problems. None of the sub drama would have happened if you just had Jay charge the battery. Or, here's another idea. Since Zane and PIXAL have infinite power sources, then why couldn't they power the sub with those? I mean, they were sooo against Jay charging the battery, even when the water wasn't in the engine room. Also, if water is leaking into the ship, then wouldn't the pressure cause the sub to be torn to shreds?

And why are they blindly piloting the sub once it's up and running? Aren't there mysterious stingray machines out there that will just fire torpedoes at them again? AND WHY IS YOUR GRAND IDEA TO PILOT THE SUBMARINE TOWARDS THE PULSE THAT TAKES AWAY ELECTRICITY?

~There's this sequence of events that makes no sense. Nya and Maya escape their pole. The sushi gang rolls in and fires the tridents at them. Now, last time I checked (ep4), these trident blasts are strong enough to incapacitate a mech and a fully-trained Ninja–with one hit. And yet three blasts perfectly hit two separate handcuffs and spared Nya and Maya from any damage.

Nya blasts a trident at a pillar and the pillar is destroyed. Literally thirty seconds later a sushi gang member fires a trident and hits a pillar, and yet the pillar is fine. Do these tridents have different settings? Why are they so inconsistent? If they do have different settings, then have Nya make a comment about it as she magically learns how to use one. If not, then don't make them as powerful as they are.

Characters.

~Maya is nice to Kalamari instead of trying to provoke him. I actually like this. You would assume after years of abuse she'd learn to try to please instead of provoke. I wish Maya was a bit less perky during this scene, but it is a nice trait for her character.

~Zane and PIXAL are fully functional underwater. Why did PIXAL worry about escaping her mech in time in ep1? If the mech blew, then she'd be fine. And if Zane was so worried, then why didn't he jump in after her? I think making it so PIXAL and Zane couldn't operate underwater would be a great obstacle for this season AND it would explain why Zane needs an underwater suit. It would create conflict. Zane and PIXAL are the technical experts when it comes to navigating underwater, but they can't survive in the water. It would also add so much tension when the sub got flooded. Anyway.

~Jay is still not acknowledged when the team is trying to fix the sub. He also makes a heroic sacrifice, nearly dies, AND DOESN'T MAKE A JOKE WHEN THE OTHERS TELL HIM TO SAY SOMETHING. *gestures towards writers* They've slaughtered my boy...

Lore.

~Not a lot of lore this episode, but perhaps that's for the better. We learned about Merlopia, and I got confused again. Is Kalamari a Merlopian? Or is that his half-brother? Or are Merlopians the sushi gang? Why are there three different species living at the bottom of the ocean, but all of them need to live in air-filled castles?

Soundtrack.

~Soundtrack was great. They used the s8 credit music during the credits. I don't understand this season's obsession with rehashing music from SoG, but whatever.

Two Cents.

~Okay but Kalamari's voice (when he's not complaining) is very nice. Like it's so smooth. I don't know how to describe it. The dude playing him has a voice for radio.

~The lack of effort in the character designs is depressing. I mean, Trimaar is literally Kalamari but with different eyes and a crown. The sushi gang also looks all the same, save a different colored scale every now and then. The snakes also have sparkly teeth.

~Watching Nya and Maya butt-wiggle up a pole is one of the more disturbing things I've seen recently. Enough said.

Nyamari

~Daaaang so much tension when he introduces himself. Enemies to lovers anyone?

~Nya taking pleasure from provoking him. Totally enemies to lovers.

Overall Rating:

3/10. Kalamari's voice saves this show.
