Ep 13: The Calm Before the Storm

**please keep comments spoiler free, as this is my first time watching this season**

Plot.

~Overall plot. No intro, just a random ship being attacked by Kal (Kalmaar) and Woh (Wohira). Cut to arcade scene, where Bentley and Unmentionable literally break a game because they're so awesome. They get a call. Cyrus-Borg-snake dude tells them Kal swapped the amulets and awoke Woh. Also all this happened two days ago. The Ninja issue a city-wide evacuation. Woh floods the city immediately after the evacuation was issued, so it's safe to assume that she drowned a crap ton of people.

~This episode could have been structured better. I know in s8, ep 9 they delayed the intro to give us a prologue scene, but there was no intro to this episode. As much as I dislike the intro to Seabound, it kind of needs to be there. I could rant and storm about how I didn't like the delayed information of Kal activating Woh, but it'd be easier for me to just say how I would have structured it.

Opening is Kal bursting into the Tatarus Trench temple with the Storm Amulet. He then proceeds to get his army to activate Wohira, and we get the scene of Woh terrorizing a stray boat. Maybe even a shot of the Merlopians seeing that their leader is not benevolent and running to hide.

Intro with a bit of foreboding music instead of the regular theme-–like what they did in s8 when our last scene of the previous episode was Zane getting beat by Mr. E.

Scene where Amy is having the team fix new water weapons, seeing as Kal is still on the loose. Maybe a shot where Clyde is checking in with Vania to see if the Storm Amulet is still being protected.

Call where Cyrus-Borg-snake confesses how Kal swapped the amulets. No flashback scene, because the flashback scene was better left in the mystery box. It was so much cooler implied than shown.

Right after the confession, we get the police bursting in with the boat's (shown in the prologue scene) distress call. Ninja realize Woh is loose and on the run.

Water starts rushing into the city as the evacuation is carried out. We get a cool 'save people from drowning' scene. Kind of like that one scene in s2 where the Ninja are trying to beat the Stone Warriors to the top of the tower.

Episode ends with Kalmaar bursting in and ruining Gail Gossip's new story.

Characters.

~So it's been two days since the Ninja locked up the Storm Amulet. What do they do in these two days? Apparently hang around the arcade and slack off. It's like rewatching the mistakes of s1 all over again, but I need to dissociate "Masters of Spinjitzu" from "Ninjago". It's the only way I'm going to finish this season.

~Okay, so Bentley seems pretty in character. Here's a reaction comment I left whilst watching him this episode..

"Kalmaar's still out there, ruling the seas and "terrorizing" people, and Bentley decides he's going to the arcade. Great. Great job being a Ninja there, Bentley. I guess saving people isn't important unless it's saving yourself or Unmentionable."

~Here's another reaction since I can't figure out where else to put it.

"they made flipping Jaya canon in show. How badly can you–oh wait, this is a new show. Bentley and Unmentionable. Such a cute pair. The simp and the psychopath. Their ship name could be Simchopath. I love how they're playing a dance game at an arcade when Kalmaar's out there still being a threat. I guess they're supposed to remember how Pythor came in and stole the fang blades from them while they were partying in Masters of Spinjitzu, but nah, that was the old show. And Simchopath cute moments TOTALLY are more important than seeing how Kalmaar reactivated idk, one of the biggest threats in Ninjago history. Go shipping and fan service!"

**I think I need to explain myself here. The writers put the word "Jaya" in the show. They took the popular shipping name from the fandom and made it canon in the show. I cannot describe to you how much I hate it when writers do that. The show and the fandom are two different entities. When you start breaking the fourth wall and allowing the fandom to dictate what goes in the show, it's going to go downhill fast.

Take Star vs the Forces of Evil. The fandom really wanted this ship called Starco to be endgame. The problem was, while the show had teased this ship, it wasn't written to have Starco get together at the end naturally. So the writers forced it to please the fandom, and the show's quality suffered because of this.

That's an example of the fans controlling the show, and I could see how that might not apply to the "Jaya" incident. But still. It's not like Jay and Nya put their heads together for something and a random character made up a nickname for them. This was blatantly the writers trying to do fan service. I despise when the writers start letting the fandom get to them, because it's a slippery slope that eventually leads to another Starco situation.**

~I guess this is more anger towards the writers, but still, this scene speaks volumes about the characters as well. Here are highly trained Ninja, who we're supposed to believe have endured years and years of methodical villains. They've learned the lesson TWICE to never stop training, otherwise they're going to be caught off guard. We've already had this scenario play out before. Despite that, everyone (not just Bentley and Unmentionable) chooses to think "oh we're safe; let's party and have fun". It seems only Amy is thinking about Kalmaar still being an active threat, but of course she is because gatekeep gaslight girlboss.

SERIOUSLY? Is everyone on this team (including Beta, Misako, Benzoyl Peroxide, and literally everyone else who interacted with the Ninja during this season) so stupid and shallow that as soon as the threat doesn't affect them anymore, they just stop caring about it? What about the Merlopians and the sushi gang? What about the underwater kingdom that Kalmaar had full control of? I guess they don't matter.

Maybe Unmentionable isn't the only narcissist in this series. I was right in renaming the cast, because every time I think the writers can't ruin these beloved icons of my childhood more, they totally do.

Lore.

~Oh, so the tridents can mind control now. This makes so much sense and is totally consistent with the rest of the season. Best show in existence. It isn't taking all of my willpower to actually finish this episode. Nope.

~I'm going to insert a picture really quick.

Bro... this is Wohira? This is one of Ninjago's biggest threats ever? HA. HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHahahahahahahahahhahaha---

How am I supposed to be intimidated by something that tiny and pathetic looking?

The animation for her is terrible. Okay...

1) They didn't even animate scales onto her. So she's a moving pole.

2) She's a sea snake with wings. Sea snakes don't need wings to swim. Things like eels might need fins, and honestly, giving Woh here some spiky fins on her sides would be a fantastic design choice.

3) Giving her wings and horns makes her look like a Dollar Store dragon. Literally her design is "black pole with turquoise stripes, golden horns and tiny wings" I see maybe three tiny fins?

This is such a letdown. If you're going to hype of the villain this much, at least make her look cool.

Secondly, I love how when Woh fell asleep people rolled her into such a peaceful position and built a temple around her. I mean, totally, make it super easy to find her and stick those amulets back in her head. Don't bury her beneath a pile of rubble, and I don't know, DESTROY THE AMULETS. If she was that big of a threat, then don't just leave her in the perfect position to wake up. And, the amulets aren't shown to do anything either, so why haven't they been destroyed? It's like the FSM wanted Wohira to wake back up. I mean–-

Soundtrack.

~The arcade scene might be unnecessary, but I did enjoy the pixelated dance music. At least someone is doing their job right this season. *applauds soundtrack designers*

~Nice use of silence when Cyrus-Borg-snake was finishing his story.

~7:50. I actually recognize this leitmotif from this season. I believe it's used when the Ninja are using underwater vehicles, so it was a nice touch to add when Amy is working on more. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the soundtrack for this episode has been rather solid. I'm actually enjoying it.

~That finale music was perfect. Insert the ocean leitmotif followed by the dramatic exit–-I was literally applauding. Fantastic job. This episode's soundtrack was on point.

Two Cents.

~Why would anyone be fishing in the middle of the day? On a dock nonetheless.

~That was a terribly animated hug, but sure, Simchopath for the win.

~I'm no expert on arcade games. However, aren't they supposed to be independent consoles, like lamps? Meaning they only work if they're plugged in, and they have a certain set of code on them. It's not like I can get a PacMan machine to browse the internet. If that is the case, then why are all the arcade games flashing with an evacuation alert? It just doesn't make sense. Have the citizens check their phones.

Kalmaar.

~Bro I don't even have enough energy to love you anymore. This show is so gosh darn draining.

Overall Rating:

1.7/10. The soundtrack is the only good thing in this season.
