Ep 11: Papergirl
**please keep comments spoiler free, as this is my first time watching this season**
**Out of respect for my boy Kalmaar, since he's the best character in this season, I will finally stop calling him Kalamari. (Also because Nya calls him that, and I don't want to associate with the narcissist).**
Plot.
~Overall plot. Antonia is quitting the newspaper business. Kalmaar's army attacks Ninjago for seemingly no reason. Antonia tells Nelson she's quitting, and that's that. Nelson is sad. Antonia gets her hands on the Storm Amulet. She and Nelson outrun Kalmaar. Kalmaar beats them, steals the amulet, and leaves. The Ninja go off chasing him. Antonia decides not to quit the newspaper business.
~If we're discussing what I felt about this episode, then I'd say it was fine. If you disregard Walmart bikes surviving ten foot falls, managing parkour in Mission Impossible stakes, and probably, what, 10-14-year-olds being able to outbike cars? It's entertaining. I actually really like the idea of seeing Ninjago from a normal person's point of view.
~Objectively, this episode has absolutely no place in this season/show. Kalmaar still escapes with the Amulet at the end of the episode. You could cut this episode from the narrative and nothing would change. In a continuous series, episodes like these are considered filler. With the amount of narrative time the writers have been wasting with Seabound, I would much rather these ten minutes to have been spread out elsewhere to try and tell a more compelling story.
I like Antonia and Nelson, but not enough for them to interrupt this mediocre plot with a pointless side story.
Characters.
~The problem with centering the story around Antonia and Nelson is that... *drumroll please*... THEY'VE HAD NO TIME TO DEVELOP AS CHARACTERS. Nelson is a kid I've seen all of fifteen minutes of over the past thirteen seasons/two specials/all those comics. I know he's a kid who loves the Ninja. That's about it.
Antonia has had less time than him. I know she's a veteran at her job, and is presented as the tough kid. That's it. No flaws, no interesting personality quirks.
Nelson and Antonia have done nothing to help the plot. Telling the story from their point of view is interesting, but if the writers are going to do it, MAKE IT SIGNIFICANT. Have the duo keep the Storm Amulet out of Kalmaar's clutches, so that he's forced to rethink his evil plans. Something along those lines. This season is already falling flat because it doesn't have enough time to tell a proper story. Why is it deriving from its thinning lifespan to tell a meaningless side story about characters that people barely know?
**In regards to my last statement, I may not have the best knowledge about the Ninjago fandom. I assume Antonia and Nelson aren't massively popular, but if they do have a large fanbase, please correct me here.**
~I liked that Kalmaar wasn't able to drive. I also love seeing the show creators using his tentacles to give him an upper hand in the fights. His wit and charm are amazing. He's not cocky, just methodical. I like that.
Lore.
~what lore? *thinks about the episode* oh you mean the tridents? Yeah, I don't care.
Soundtrack.
~Nothing wrong here. You can't really do any meaningful stuff with the soundtrack during an episode that has no meaning.
Two Cents.
~It's really stupid to be watching a chase scene where a couple of kids on bikes are outrunning a car where driver is probably flooring the gas pedal. It's like in Obi Wan Kenobi (spoilers!), where a ten year old was able to outrun grown men. It just doesn't make sense. Have other cars get in the way of Kalmaar's vehicle. Something.
Kalmaar
~still the best character in this season. Hope he wipes the floor with the Ninja team.
Overall Rating.
–/10. Pointless. Waste of time. The reason it doesn't get a rating is because it shouldn't be in the show. I'm counting it as a 0/10, but the Kaiju Protocol is still the worst episode.
A Day Later.
~The day after watching this episode I had a thought. What was the lesson of this episode? If it was "Antonia realizes she can make a difference as a papergirl," then I missed that. Because she didn't make a difference. She didn't stop Kalmaar from taking the Storm Amulet. If she had just stood there while Kai was underwater, one of the other Ninja would have jumped in to save him. She didn't DO anything to learn the lesson that being a papergirl is worth something. If I were her, I'd still go to work at Dairy Dragon. At least they pay more.
