Chapter 8- Tricksters
Tanith
After my last encounter with Krakenkid, I spent the next day working on anything I could be working on, mainly working on a new recipe for a potion I wanted to make. It was suppose to enhance my magic abilities for short periods of time.
Sadly, it didn't work out. Something went wrong and it somehow solidified. I decided to sleep on it.
The next day, I had a slight panic attack after I woke up and found something. Or rather, didn't find something. My staff was gone.
"Where is it?" I mumbled to myself, tearing my room apart just looking for it. The once nicely arranged room had turned to chaos in minutes. No matter what I did, it couldn't be found. "I could have sworn I left it here." I checked the night stand for the third or forth time and only got the same results, nothing.
My search didn't end there as I began to pull up the couch cushions just to look for it. "Dang it Tanith, the one thing you cannot replace is the one thing you lose. That was a family heirloom! My main source of magic!" I groaned loudly and banged my head on the cushions. "It's going to be so much harder without it." Eventually, I calmed myself down, just enough to access the situation properly. My eyes scanned the area, and locked onto a piece of paper on the table.
That wasn't there last night.
I couldn't help but swim towards it, circling the island table when I approached, the snake half curling around the corners. Snatching it off the surface, I mumbled it to myself.
"'Hello stranger, it's nice to see another girl is around. However don't think for a moment that we'll go easy on you!'"
I couldn't help but raise my eyebrow at the sentence. "Go easy on me? What does that even mean? Am I going to fight someone or..?" Shaking it off, I read the rest.
"'Go to these coordinates and prove yourself. If you win, you will be rewarded. Signed, SS.'"
"SS? Huh. What does that stand for? Secret... Society? Special Spaghetti? For all I know, I could be right." Though I thought about it, my eyes wandered down to the numbers. Pulling out an atlas, I set off to find where these coordinates.
The coordinates led to the middle of nowhere. Though I could still see the monorails, there seemed to be nothing here. "Maybe if I go to the exact spot?" I murmured and swam faster. Arriving at the very spot in question, nothing happened at first. Doing a full 360, still nothing came up. "What the heck? Maybe it was a joke or," I glanced down. "Am I suppose to dig down and find something?" Even if the latter of those was right, I had forgotten my pickax at home. Giggling seemed to echo throughout the area making me turn towards the sound.
"What th-" The ground beneath me disappeared suddenly and I fell. "WHOA!"
As soon as my tail touched the ground I examined the area. My heart calmed down a little bit but I could still how fast it was before. A stone area was clearly made was about five by five, more or less. A single piece of glow-stone was in the corner, producing extra light. Right when I glanced up, my exit closed.
But another door opened. Literary.
A entry opened up and having no other choice, I walked through. Inside was another room, but this one had a frame with a iron sword in it. Taking it out, I put it away. Might be useful. Nearby was another note.
"Welcome!" I began to read it. "Hope you're up for a little fun! -SS." I squinted my eyes. "SS? Still wondering who that is. Or what. It could be a group of people or-" The sound of another thing opening alerted me I had more to do. As soon as I stepped in it, not only did the wall close behind me again, but I groaned in frustration.
"A maze? Are you kidding me?" The many different turns and places I could go seemed endless. My fists clenched but I forced a deep breath and decided on a direction.
The first path I took led to a dead end, as did three others. Though one path seemed to take me further, in the end, only dead ends came from it. The winding of the walls and how the whole maze seemed like to be a giant circle that for some reason, I couldn't solve. "I know how to heal people from deadly wounds." I gritted my teeth after hitting another dead end. "And how to do all sorts of magic. I have been in many wars and seen many things. I know how to slip through enemy lines undetected and how to use various weapons." Suddenly I couldn't contain it any more.
"BUT I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME GET THROUGH A FREAKING MAZE!" I screeched.
A sudden growl from something behind me told me that wasn't a good idea. Slowly I rotated around and gazed up in horror. "Crap." A werewolf stood behind me. The red eyes appeared to be glowing. The dark gray fur ruffled up, teeth baring at me and more growling came from it. "You have to be kidding me... Hey buddyyyy." I tried to give it my most charming smile possible. The eyes didn't stop from being hostile. "... You seem good today?" I did my best to subtly inch back and tried getting out my staff, but the beast noticed and lunged.
Ducking down, the half wolf missed and skidded on the ground behind. As it whipped around, I swiped for the beings legs getting a hit, a spray of blood coming out of the wound. Growling more, the claws hit this time, injuring my shoulder. I hissed in pain and for intimidation. The werewolf did seem a little effected by it but not nearly as much as I'd like.
I swung again, hitting the chest directly this time. A deep gash made them flinch and whimper in pain. Wait, aren't werewolves weak to silver or something? Though it wasn't a solid answer, the werewolf ran off into the maze, going into a path I hadn't taken yet. Getting an idea, I followed them, taking twists and turns I had never taken. "Does this one know the maze?" I muttered, not expecting an answer. Eventually, we arrived, they had taken me straight to the end, where new people were.
There stood, or rather floated, two female mermaids. One of them had blonde hair and a deep pink tail. She wore a pink mermaid bra. The other wore a similar outfit but more aqua, and had a deep green tail as well as brown hair. Both had mischievous smiles on their faces and giggled when I arrived.
"Hey! You made it!" The werewolf stood behind them, laying down, resting after our little battle. "Congratulations! You have survived our little prank!" The blonde one smiled at me. I blinked and shifted my eyes from one to the other. "Uh thanks? Who are you two?" They just laughed. "Oh sorry. I'm Selena." The blonde one said. "And I'm Sam." The other greeted. "And we're the Sneaky Sisters." The spoke in unison.
I blinked again in confusion before realizing sometime.
"Oh! SS! Sneaky Sisters! I get it now!" I snapped my fingers and suddenly felt like I had all the answers in the world. "Anyways, what was this all for? Impressive maze by the way." They grinned even wider. "Well, you see, we are pranksters." Sam explained. "Yeah, we regularly prank people no matter who they are. Even Cody!" Selena added. "Mainly Cody." Sam snickered. The pair laughed for a while saying something about a lobster. I didn't really get it but they seemed to find it hilarious. "Yeah! That was the best! Anyways, we decided the best way to welcome you to Atlantis and to introduce ourselves was to pull this prank." Then they huffed. "Too bad you finished it so quickly by following this one. There was a lot more we were going to do. We had a fog machine and some spikes as well as some random holes in the ground covered up by ghost blocks."
Taking this in the best I could, another occurred to me. "Didn't you mention a prize?" I asked sheepishly. They chuckled and nodded. "Yep. Here's the first prize," Sam held out a familiar silver staff. "I think you'll recognize it." My eyes widened and I snatched my staff out of her hands. "Makantala!" I breathed in relief and put it away. When I looked up, both of the sisters were staring at me strangely. "What did you call it?" My face heated up a bit.
"Not relevant... Go on."
"Okay then... Here's the other prize."
Selena gave me a white unbroken sand dollar. "A sand dollar?" I question it. "Yep. Just a little something. We found it while making this whole things so why not have it. We don't need it." I gave one more look before putting it away. "Cool." Then glanced around. "Does this mean I can go home now?"
The Sneaky Sisters showed me the way out and I waved at them before heading home. When I did, I made a beeline straight to my room. I was done for the day.
