Chapter 53- Prophetic Dreams
KrakenKid
I gave my most disappointed stare to the being on my bed, but they didn't so much as blink. I stared them down for a while but finally groaned. "Sunny!"
The lion just stretched further out, covering even more of the bed. "Really? You're going to do this now?" Sunny just yawned and rolled around on my bed some more, but left no room for anyone else, certainly not someone of my size. "I need to sleep! Move!" Sunny just grumbled and gave a bored look.
"Of course... Just when I thought I was making progress with you." I shook my head and began to rub my eyes. Though Sunny was pretty strong, he wasn't very cooperative. He'd do what he wanted to and only obey about half of my commands. Getting him to move once he settled down was by far the biggest challenge of them all.
"Fine!" I threw my hands up in the air and snagged a blanket from off my bed that Sunny wasn't completely on. "I'm sleeping on the couch then, but this is the last time, you got it!" Whether Sunny understood and would cooperate next time or not was beyond me but I decided to let it go. I'll just have to deal with it later.
Though my bed would have been better, the couch was pretty comfortable. I found myself sinking right into the cushions and struggling to even stay awake a moment longer as I laid down.
It wasn't long before sleep consumed me and I was sent into a dream.
When my eyes opened, I instantly knew it was a dream. There was a slight surreal feel to everything around me and the world swayed, but I didn't. The air was cold, so much so that I could see my own breath as I exhaled and watched it swirl in the air before blending in.
I was in tunnels, though I couldn't tell where I was. It sure didn't look like any tunnels I'd ever been in. Behind me I could hear voices talking to each other, but ahead was something much more interesting. The sound of pure destruction, something I knew well.
The ground trembled slightly and was accompanied by a crashing sound. Something fell, and fell hard. The whole dream felt so real, which was strange. It was a dream, why would it be real?
Then it hit me: Prophetic dream. The weird thing was, I had one not even four days ago, why was this one so soon? What could be so important?
There was only one way of finding out. I advanced ahead slowly. The closer I got, the more I began to hear a strange huffing noise. Whatever it was was alive.
When I finally got to them, I found myself in a wide open space, but judging from the jagged walls and shaky ground, it wasn't naturally made. As I scanned the area, a strange purple energy ruthlessly shot out from somewhere, hitting the ground and making it crack the longer it was influenced by it. Luckily, the energy soon faded, and I found out where it came from.
Off to the left, someone was hunched over, clutching their head and seemed to give off a deep purple glow. The energy they gave off would lash out all around them and though it wasn't alive, it was full of rage and there was something so dangerous about it, even from just looking at it. As for the figure themselves, they didn't seem to notice I was there. I could see strangers of long hair, but I didn't truly realize who it was until I saw the snake half of them.
"Tanith?" I asked uncertainly, but she didn't react. Her body remained as if it were frozen in time, the only thing moving was the destructive magic that surrounded her, still swirling in the air. I cleared my throat and tried again. "Are you-" My words caught in my throat and I choked on them when she suddenly whipped towards me.
Her eyes were no longer blue, now flickering with the same purple energy that surrounded her and she snarled. I stumbled back as she twitched. Normally her eyes were filled with a friendly tone, sometimes even concern or sadness and even if she did get angry or frustrated, it was never like this. It was never so twisted that I was afraid she'd lash out, or to the point where it was the only emotion that she was showing. Most of all, it was never towards me. Not like this.
She let out a battle cry and launched herself at me. I regained my composure just in time to get out of the way before she reached me. She rolled on the ground, narrowly missing me but immediately faced me again. "Tanith!" I yelled. "What is wrong with you?"
She didn't respond, just hissing and once again, attacking me. Ready this time, I juked her and backed up. My heart pounded out of my chest, unsure of what to do. What was she doing? Did I do something to anger her, or is it something else? I wanted to believe it wasn't her but I could still see the same eyes beneath the layer of magic that shielded them, and I could still see the same face of that strange doctor who helped an Illithid soldier that day. The same person who kept popping up in my life until I accepted her as a part of it. The only problem was, she wasn't acting like herself.
So caught up in my own thoughts, I didn't react until it was too late. The hybrid built up a ray of whatever magic she could conjure now, and pumped her arm, shooting it right at me. Seeing how that magic was able to crack the rocky ground, I had no idea what it would do to me. It came closer and closer as the world slowed down, but I couldn't move.
It's happening again... It's happening again but how do I stop it?
I shut my eyes as tight as I could....
Then I gasped and sat up, waking up on the couch.
My heart decided this was a good time to freak out and began to beat out of control against my will. Calm was no longer an option as my brain betrayed me as well, spiraling out of control and trying to understand what just happened.
"Sir?" Two gurgled voices caught my attention and I quickly turned to see my two personal guards both giving me a concerned look. "Did you have another dream?" I took a moment to catch my breath and nodded. Though I made sure neither of them could see it, my arms were shaking. "Was it that dream again?"
I hastily shook my head. "No. No, I'm past that dream. This was..." Images of her unforgiving purple eyes flashed in my mind, nearly making me shudder. "This was something new."
Carefully, I tried to stand but nearly fell over. I would have if Sunny suddenly hadn't appeared by my side and gave me something to hold on to. Sometimes I wondered if that cat knew what was going on in my mind. "I-I need to see Darrel!" I announced, regaining my composure and starting to make my way down the stairs. "It's important!" Though I knew I didn't need to fake it with my two personal guards, I felt the need to anyways.
Lucky for me, Darrel was awake at that ungodly hour and was going through a stack of papers when I stumbled into view. He blinked in surprise and straightened up. "Kraken?"
"I need to talk to you about something!" I blurted out, snatching a chair from the conference table and pulling it up to his desk, scooting in. The bird seemed taken aback but spared no time to ask what I was talking about. I hesitated for longer than I was willing to admit. "I had a dream. I think it was prophetic."
I spilled everything to Darrel, every last detail I could remember. He listened through the whole things and nodded along. "I see..." He said at last when I finished. "And you're sure this was prophetic?"
I nodded vigorously. "Yes! I just had one a couple days ago, there's no doubt in my mind that it was one! What do I do?" I asked, genuinely needing advice.
Darrel searched me for some kind of answer. "It could happen at any time, there's no telling that it'll happen soon." He pointed out.
I shook my head. "But the last one I had happened within a day of me having it! Now this one pops up out of the blue, and it's also about me feeling like I'm about to die? They must be similar! What..." My voice trailed off and I let my head drop and thunk on the table. "What do I do, Darrel? This is Tanith we're talking about! I see her every couple of days, sometimes every day in a week! We're good friends, why would she attack me in the first place?"
Darrel watched me for a moment, then sighed in defeat. "Look, if you really are afraid that sometime today, Tanith is somehow going to gain destructive powers and try to kill you, then just avoid her so it won't happen! Simple as that."
I blinked a couple times, then cracked a smile. "Darrel... You're a genius!" I screamed at him, then bolted out of the room and down the stairs to the restaurant. "Of course! I'll just avoid her, no matter what! Plus," I snickered again as I strolled into the area. "What are the chances that Tanith will visit today- OH MY GOSH!" I nearly screamed in terror and froze on the spot.
Just coming in through the balcony was the only snake hybrid I knew. Tanith grinned and rushed over when she saw me. "KK! So sorry I'm late! I had to deal with something but I managed to get it done and got here as fast as I could! You alright?"
I could barely breath, much less answer her. Nonetheless, I finally croaked out something. "Late for what?"
She tilted her head and examined me. "You had a nightmare, didn't you?"
I nodded but confusion laced my heart. How did she- Then it hit me, my eyes widening. "The bond..." I whispered.
She stifled a laugh. "Did you forget about it? I know it's been a little while since anything really went out of control because of it but I assure you it still exists! I got it a little more under control now with Cece's help. Not the point though, do you want to talk about it?"
I couldn't help but choke. Of course she'd come because of the nightmare! Man, I have no luck when it comes to these things... This dream is trying to kill me, I swear! I cleared my throat and tried again. "Uh, yes. Just g-go up to my room and I'll be there in a... Second."
Her eyebrows knitted together. "Aren't you coming with?"
I tensed up as she moved forward. "I- uh... What? Oh! Be there in a second! Bruce just called me, I need to see him but I will be up there... Sometime.... Bye!" I said then escaped downstairs. I could feel her gaze on me as I left, probably utterly confused.
I panted when I got down to the armory and quickly hid behind the wall. Bruce, who was already there and watching me rush in and panic, decided to figure out what was going on. "You scared?" He asked in a questioning voice. I gulped and nodded a little bit. "Why you scared?"
"It's... Complicated. Just let me hide here for a while and I'll be out of your hair in no time, okay?" As perplexed as he was, Bruce left me be and started to put some explosives away. I huffed in relief and let my back slide down against the wall until I plopped on the ground. I wasn't sure what to do, but hiding sure sounded appetizing to me.
So I hid. I hid for an hour and finally came out and started to make my way over to Harold, hoping he could distract me. Once again, the universe decided to have Tanith come down the stairs at the exact time that I was crossing it. I stopped, unsure of what to do or say. The hybrid raised an eyebrow at me. "You've been gone for an hour, are you really that busy today?"
"Yes." I answered a little too quickly, shifting a little bit and slowly backing up. "I need to see Harold!" I told her and left again. Tanith tried to call out to me but I just kept going. I heard a sigh come from her, and when I glanced back, she was going back up the stairs.
"HAROLD!" I screamed, startling him when I came in. Harold was off to the side, currently working on some sort of egg shaped machine but paused his work to greet me. "Do you have anti magic stuff?" He blinked and shook his head. Before he could say anything, I beat him to it. "Well then make some!" I demanded and ran out, leaving him behind.
I knew my movements were off when I staggered through the Conch Command, and though some people stared, no one dared to say anything. "Maybe it was just a dream!" I mumbled under my breath. "Just a dream, just a dre- who am I kidding? It's going to happen! It's going to happen today and I'm going to die! To a doctor of all people! If anything I thought-" I cut myself off as CannibalCrab approached me, but slowed down greatly when he heard my mumbling. "What do you want?" I yelled, my emotions spazzing out of control.
"Sir, it's extremely important! I have a situation and I need-" He thinks whatever he's got is important? I might die! That's more important! I growled under my breath.
"I'm already dealing with something right now! You deal with it!" I snapped at him and pushed past him, even as he tried to explain himself further and get me on his side. That doesn't matter, nothing else matters! I just need to live! I just need to get through this day without seeing her again! The eyes flashed in my mind again and I clutched my head.
What was wrong with me?
I kept hiding throughout the whole day, and managed to get luckier. Though I'd see her walking around and asking people where I went, I managed to stay out her view for most of the day. Hours on end passed and I thought I would make it.
How wrong I was.
After hiding there for forty five minutes, I abandoned my spot in an empty jail cell and started to make my way over to the hospital, but her voice stopped my heart. "KK!" I snapped my head over to her, my heart pounding. Her face was somehow firm but concerned at the same time, impossible to tell which was the overpowering feeling. She slithered right up to me and studied me. "KK... What's wrong? You've been acting weird all day and right now you seem so scared. Can I help in anyway?" She reached out to touch my shoulder lightly, but I backed up.
"I'm fine!" I insisted and turned away, trying to escape her through the main exit. Suddenly, she grabbed my arm and pulled me a little closer.
I tried to tug away, but she said something that made my fear consume me. "KrakenKid." Her voice was solid, showing little emotion. I glanced back at her, now feeling myself shaking. No... No, no, no! "What's going on?" She demanded of me.
I couldn't talk, not properly at least. My whole body went into flight or fight mode, and I went with the first option. I slipped from right under her grip and bolted away as fast as I could, this time heading for the tunnels, my escape. I only glanced back once, and noticed this time, Tanith wasn't alone. A red and orange figure and a smaller and purple figure both were talking to her, the bigger of the two pulling her away. I could see her trying to resist for a moment, reaching out in my direction, but soon she followed their will and they were all gone.
And I plunged into the darkness of the tunnels.
My mind was scattered, unable to think of anything else but the dream. Naturally, as vulnerable as I felt, I gravitated towards a corner. I found myself in a little opening in the tunnel and curled up in the corner. My breath, currently uneven, tried to stabilize itself but it wasn't working. In fact, removing any panic wasn't working.
Time was irrelevant. I wasn't sure how long I was there, but it felt like eternity. I could hear everything and feel every single emotion there was as I left myself alone to my thoughts. I wasn't even sure what I was thinking until I was interrupted by movement. Something was moving out there in the tunnels, rustling rocks as they glided across the floor. I shot my head up but immediately buried it in my arms when I saw Tanith come into view. I pressed my back against the wall and used every tactic in the book to make myself as defensive as possible.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! My brain couldn't think of nothing else. All there was was fear, and it was consuming me.
Then, I heard something fall to the ground. My eyes slowly opened and found the last thing I thought I'd see.
Tanith was laying on the ground, her tail and most of her body were as flat as she could make them, but her head was propped up. I gave her a good long stare before managing to say anything. "W-what are you doing?"
"People normally feel safer around other people when they aren't towering over them, so I figured you might feel better if I'm lower than you are right now." She paused. "... Is it working?"
As strange as the idea was, it kinda was working. I gave a little nod, getting a warm smile out of her. "Good." The silence that passed through us was so thick, you could almost touch it, but Tanith asked the inevitable question. "KK... What's going on with you? Did I do something wrong?"
I sighed and closed my eyes. "It's not what you've done, but what you might do." She stared at me in confusion but I didn't want to tell her what happened in the dream. Not all of it at least. "I had a dream where you attacking me and it felt really real."
Her blue eyes softened and she slowly inched forward. "KK, I'd never hurt you." She told me. "Dreams can really mess with people, but in the end, they're just dreams, nothing more. You don't have anything to worry about."
Slowly but surely, Tanith made her way over to me and sat against the wall next to me. She placed her hand on my shoulder. "You can trust me, honest."
I didn't say anything for a while, but finally let out a short chuckle. Did I worry for nothing?
We just sat there for a while, laying against the wall and letting time pass by. Eventually, as my eyes drifted to her, I asked a question.
"Why do you wear red all the time?"
Tanith snorted at the question. "I'm sorry, did you ask why I wear red? What kind of question is that?"
"I'm just asking! Seriously, do you have any other colors? Plus, you changed your house roof from blue to red! What's up with that?"
Tanith looked left and right then beckoned me to lean in. I obeyed and she whispered to me. "It's my favorite color." I instantly rolled my eyes as she snickered to herself. "It's true though! I like the color red! I guess it's also kinda symbolic too."
I gave a weird look and prompted her to explain. "In my culture, a little similar to yours, we have all colors relating to a certain emotions or things. Red symbolizes passion, love and war, a little similar to yours. I didn't start wearing red until I got into the business of traveling around and getting involved in wars."
"Really?" I asked, tilting my head as I grinned. "What else?"
"Well, blue symbolizes calm, sadness and healing, much like you guys. Pink is joy, yellow is sunlight or power, and so on! Any questions?"
I lightly chuckled, but soon it drained out of me and I was left asking one thing. "What about purple?"
She thought to herself. "Purple is the color of mystery, and rage."
Rage... That's all I thought as I yawned and started to blink rapidly. "Huh... Interesting..." My voice trailed off, but it made sense. Rage...
***********************************************************
Annnnnd that's it for this chapter! Oh boy, stuff happens.
KrakenKid gets another dream, but this one doesn't happen within the same day he gets it. When will it happen? Will it happen at all? Only I know.
When I said the dream would effect his relationship with Tanith, notice I never specified if it would be good or bad, just that it would do something.
Anyways, I think everything else doesn't need to be explained, or will be soon so I hope you liked this! Be sure to comment your thoughts on it, and I'll see y'all later!
