Chapter 51- Trail

Third Person
"Cody." A voice whispered in Cody's mind, so soft and fragile. "They need your help." It came again, the voice starting to echo in his mind, louder now.

Cody began to shift but a heavy weight and pain on his arms and legs made him want to go back to sleep so it would stop. The voice came again, stronger and more demanding now. "Wake up."

Cody's eyes fluttered but didn't stay open long. A small stream of light shined in his face, making him want to keep his eyes shut. "Wake up!" The voice sounded almost irritated now.

Cody attempted to shake himself, but before he could try one more time, it screamed in his head.

"WAKE UP!"

Cody gasped, eyes flying open and suddenly, the voice was gone without a trace. He blinked rapidly, his eyes trailing down to whatever was on him and preventing him from moving.

Two great boulders pinned both his legs down as well as his right arm. Only his left arm was free and stronger than ever, barely damaged at all.

The king's mind spun until he took the only course of action he could think of. He reached over to the rock on his right arm and tried to push it off.

Lucky for him, that one was loose. He managed to slightly lift it off his arm for long enough that he could slip out from under it and let it fall back to the ground. Then came his legs. This one was larger and heavier, but with both of his arms trying to push it off and his legs moving away, he got those free as well. The only downside was when Cody got his left leg out, the edges of the boulder scraped his leg and earned him a fresh gash.

Carefully, the penguin stood and stared at what became of the little cave.

The cave in had covered the ground with rocks, big and small as well as brought down some larger ones as well. A small hill formed around the side opposite to his.

KrakenKid's side.

"Kranky?" He called out, a little concerned of what became of him. "You still alive? Scream once if you're still alive, scream twice if you're dead."

Total silence filled the room, making him shift uncomfortably.

Stumbling over to KrakenKid's side of the room, Cody continued to talk, wanting to hear something other than silence. "Come on, don't be a poor sport! KrankyKid? Helloooooo?"

Cody made his way to the hill formed by dozens of rocks all stacked on each other. He balanced a bit but abruptly, it gave away a little and one leg slipped deeper in the hill. He only stopped when he hit something solid, and warm. A low groan emitted from whatever he hit.

"KrankyKid!" Cody grinned and started to dig, shoving the rumble away until a purple torpedo shaped head came into view. From there, it was easy to get the rest of him out. "There you are! Finally! I thought you died for a second there."

The yellow eyes opened weakly and he stiffly started to stand. "It's gonna take a lot more than a couple of rocks to kill me." He smirked, then shot the penguin an annoyed look. "And don't call me KrankyKid."

Cody laughed as he regained his senses before turning to him. "So, penguin... What happened exactly?"

Cody shrugged, eyes looking around. "Not entirely sure but see that?" He pointed to the ceiling where a hole formed, light coming through the room. "That's our exit." He watched as the kraken's eyes brightened. "We're getting out of here."

KrakenKid and Cody wasted no time scrambling to get out and found themselves in a tunnel. One that Cody instantly recognized. "The Sneaky Sister's tunnels?" He blinked. "When did this cave get here?"

KrakenKid just chuckled. "Ohhh yeah, these tunnels! Ah, good memories. I believe I made my first appearance to the new you a long time ago and invaded the lab! One of my prouder moments." He said smugly.

Cody turned to send him a 'Really?' look but did a double take. "Are you okay?"

KrakenKid blinked and checked himself before he said anything. "That explains why my right arm feels like it's on fire..."

Not only did he have several scratches all over him, mainly his back from what Cody could see, but a jagged rock was lodged into his upper right arm. Lucky for him, it didn't look infected. His left eye was red and had a slight bruise around it. Cody winced. "I think I stepped on your eye when I found you..." He admitted sheepishly.

The kraken just let out a long and exasperated breath. "Let's just get out of here. I have a couple people who probably freaked out that I was gone."

"Blooper?" Cody guessed.

KrakenKid shook his head. "CannibalCrab. Tough body, very soft heart. Don't tell him I said that, he'll get offended."

The pair followed the light until they made it to the exit and stepped into the real world.

But what they saw made them pause. Nearby, the rails were broken and parts of the lab were smashed. Above all that, there were houses, all fallen and turned to a pile of marble.

"Did the earthquake do this?" Cody questioned, but KrakenKid disagreed.

"It's too random, plus the lab would be the safest place! That could survive something that... Something big smashed it, not an earthquake. Whatever did this shook the ground when it did and made our roof fall."

Cody knew what did it all before KrakenKid said anything, it just fit too well. "Hulk." His voice barely a whisper. "Oh no... Professor, what did you do?"

Cody snapped out of his thoughts and eyed the kraken's wound. "We should get you to a doctor, that looks pretty bad."

KrakenKid smirked and started to head for the heart of Atlantis. "Hey!" Cody called as he did. "The hospital and the Conch Command is the other way!"

"Hospital doesn't like me much and getting to the Conch Command will take a while. I know a shortcut to a doctor who will fix me up in seconds!" He replied. Cody grumbled but followed him anyways.

It didn't take long to get there. KrakenKid wasn't kidding when he said it wouldn't take long. They reached Tanith's balcony and while Cody tried to knock, KrakenKid just strolled inside like he was going to his second house.

"Paging Doctor Tanith!" KrakenKid yelled as he entered. "You got two guys who need a doctor!"

However, the house was deadly silent for a while, making Cody shiver. Then, something from upstairs began to thump down the stairs. The two leaders turned, unsure of what they were going to see but blinked in surprise when a chest with dozens of small legs popped around the corner and hopped over to them, making a strange whimpering sound. KrakenKid blinked.

"Larry?" He questioned. "Where's Tanith?"

Larry stared at them for a while before spitting out a familiar silver staff. Both of them jumped back in surprise but Cody was the one to pick it up. "Her staff?"

KrakenKid's head shook slowly. "She almost never leaves home without it... Larry, where is she?"

Larry shrunk down and turned to their right. Their heads did the same until they saw it. The front door, wide open.

KrakenKid whipped back around to Larry and bent down as low as he could go, rubbing the top of his head. "What are you trying to tell us? Is Tanith gone?"

Larry attempted to mirror a nod, despite not having a neck. "Was she taken?" Cody asked this time, but Larry hesitated. "... Are you not sure if she was?" He guessed, getting a more sure nod this time. Cody's eyebrows furrowed. "Weird... Pikalus goes crazy, Tanith flat out leaves without her staff, the Sneaky Sisters get a new cave and we were trapped in said cave for a while. What's going on?"

KrakenKid just kept giving comforting pats to Larry. "I don't know but I have to get home and find out. Maybe they'll have answers."
***************

KrakenKid clutched his upper arm as he walked through Sector Four. Tanith's medical advice came back to him. Apply pressure to the wound to keep the blood from spilling out too much.

Everything felt so empty, even more than usual that is. It was like as if life had been sucked out of the land.

KrakenKid paused when he hears something, an animal noise, but he couldn't figure what kind. He did a full 360 but found nothing out of the ordinary.

Then something slammed into his body and both fell to the ground. KrakenKid soon found himself pinned under something, and turned his head to find out what. He cracked a grin.

"Sunny! Sheesh, I know you're excited to see me but you can't just tackle people like that! I thought we were getting better about controlling your strength."

Sunny, the lion made from solid light, just huffed like he always did and stood up, allowing the kraken to slip out from under him. The lion blinked calmly and sniffed him, ears flickering a bit and continued to stare at him for a while longer. Out of nowhere, he let out a loud roar, startling KrakenKid. "What was that for?" He asked him, bewildered.

Only seconds later, he would find out as Tide Changers started to run towards the sound. It was mostly Illithids at first but then he noticed people like Gnash with them. The stone golem bolted towards him before stopping a couple feet away.

"S-Sir!" He stuttered out in surprise. "You're back!"

KrakenKid just smiled back at him. "It's good to be back! What happened? Was I kidnapped or something?"

Gnash shared a look with the Illithid soldiers. "We were hoping you could tell us what happened. You walked out of the Conch Command, dropped all your stuff in the tunnels and didn't come back! This is the seventh search party we've sent out to find you!"

KrakenKid blinked. "I... What? That doesn't make any sense, I don't remember any of that."

They only became more uneasy. Sunny's mane fluffed out a little as the soldiers shifted their weight from one side to the other. "We'll figure it out when we get home." Gnash decided finally. "Do you at least know where anyone else is?"

"Anyone else?" He echoed.

Gnash's face went paler than before and turned to the others for help. None of them stepped forward and looked equally as terrified. KrakenKid realized they were afraid of telling him something. "What is it?" He demanded.

Gnash took in a deep and careful breath. "Sir... CannibalCrab and Blooper have both gone missing in the same way you have. You're the only one to come back so far."

KrakenKid's blood ran cold.
**********************

Cody tried to grasp for words to somehow react to what his great uncle told him, but all of them failed him. Rasmus' eyes were laced with sympathy but he didn't say a word, waiting for Cody to first.

Finally, he got it. "They're all gone? All of them? Professor, Selena, Sam and Tanith?"

Rasmus' gaze clouded. "Well... Professor did make a guest appearance not too long ago as the Hulk and destroyed parts of the lab and royal district, but he disappeared as fast as he came and we have no idea what became of him."

"A-And, everyone, including me and KrakenKid, disappeared the same way?" Rasmus nodded, get a long exhale from the king. "That's... Just fantastic, oh boy... Can I have my stuff back?" He managed to get out at last. He wasn't sure what to do.

"Of course, all of it is in your room, in the nightstands. If you have anymore questions, just ask and I'll be there." The rooster offered, but he shook his head.

"I'll be fine... Thanks Rasmus." Cody added at last before leaving for his room.

Like he was told, Cody found his stuff in his nightstand, putting some things to the side, including his spear before getting his hands on his phone. Typing in the password, he let out a low whistle. "Over fifty texts? Oh boy, they really freaked out."

Cody went through, replying to them or leaving them be, no need to remind Rasmus he was okay, but paused over some of them. Tanith's last texts to him were a bit creepy.

Someone's in my house. Those were the last words she said before going off the radar like everyone else. The weird thing was, Larry didn't seem so sure when Cody asked him about her and what happened. If someone got into her house, why didn't Larry nod when Cody asked him if she was taken?

If they were all sure a person was doing this, then why did everyone see them leaving on their own account?

Guards said that when you left the palace, you were acting aloof, which I found hard to believe, but I don't think it was you. Another text from the hybrid that Cody didn't understand. What did she mean by, "I don't think it was you?" Who else would it be?

Cody sent a text to everyone that was missing before hitting the power button. Something was up.

His phone rang. He made a scramble to pick it up, but hesitated when it wasn't a number he recognized. Cody took a deep breath, answered and put it up to his ear. "Hello?" He breathed, unsure of who would speak on the other side.

"We need to talk. Now." The king recognized the voice the instant it spoke.

"KrakenKid?" He stood up. "How did you-"

"I have my ways. Now come on you smelly penguin! Go alone to those tunnels that the mermaids live in. I'll be waiting." The kraken cut in and hung up as soon as he was done, leaving Cody with so many questions.

"How the heck did he get my number?" He mumbled to himself.

KrakenKid was already waiting at the entrance of the Sneaky Sister's tunnels by the time the king got there. He was leaned on his left side, against the wall, favoring it. His upper right arm was bandaged up. "It's about time!" The kraken exclaimed when he saw him. "How slow do you walk?"

"It's a little ways away and I didn't have a head start like you, chill." Cody replied coolly, crossing his arms. "What do you need?"

KrakenKid paused before shaking his head. "Did you find out what happened? About everyone else?" Cody nodded. "Do you have any information about them? Where they would be or anything at all?"

Cody thought to himself. "You were right, Pikalus was the one to cause all that destruction but no one knows where he went..."

KrakenKid growled and rubbed his forehead. "Great, just great... My right hand man, my son and my favorite Atlantean, all gone! Plus Salami, she's pretty okay and treats my son good so that's a shame." He went silent before facing the penguin. "Have you tried everything? Favorite places, witnesses, I don't know, texting them?"

Cody rolled his eyes, slipping his phone out of his pocket. "I highly doubt that texting-" His voice trailed off when he saw a notification on his phone. "Well stab me in the gut, look who texted me back."

KrakenKid's eyes shot a glare. "Did you really have to choose that exclamation out of anything?"

"Hush and look!" Cody shoved the phone in KrakenKid's face. He stumbled back so he could actually see it but he blinked in surprise at what it read. "It's Tanith! She texted back!"

"Open it! What'd she say?" KrakenKid asked, peeking over the Atlanteans shoulder as he took it back and typed in the password too fast for him to see.

Tanith: Hey, Cody? I'm a little lost right now

"So she's okay! That's a relief."

"Shut up and text her penguin! Find out more!"

"No need to rush, I got this!"

Cody: Thank goodness you're okay! Where are you? Name stuff off that you see, we can come get you.

Tanith: I can't really see anything. I think I'm in a cave or something

Tanith: We? Who else is with you?

Cody: KrakenKid is here with me, breathing down my neck and making me extremely uncomfortable

"Wow, if you wanted me to back off, you could've said it out loud."

Cody smirked at him as he moved back. "Yeah, but this way is more fun."

Tanith: And you're not killing each other? You and KrakenKid have come a long way

Cody: No kidding.

Cody: But you're in a cave? Anyone else with you?

Tanith: I think so but it's hard to tell. I can't really move right now, my body is really sore for some reason

Cody paused before coming up with an idea.

Cody: Send me your location. There should be an option on your phone to

Minutes passed before KrakenKid asked anything. "So?"

"She's trying to send me her location. From there, we can track her down and see if she knows anything."

His phone buzzed and a map appeared, a pin on it that could only be where the phone was coming from.

Tanith: Huh, looks like I'm in the outskirts. That's news to me

Cody: We'll come and get you real quick, sit tight

Tanith: I have no idea how to "Sit tight" so I'll just sit normally.

Cody shut his phone off and looked up at KrakenKid. "I gotta location on her, wanna go in for a rescue? She mentioned someone is with her, maybe it's your son!"

KrakenKid nodded. "Even if I didn't, we don't have many other options. This is our only trail we have."

Cody grinned. "That's the spirit."

Cody stared at the map for a long while while KrakenKid groaned. "Why can't Atlanteans read a map?" He asked rhetorically before snatching the phone out of the penguins hands. Cody protested but was waved off. "I'm just looking at the map, calm down." Moments later, they set off again, this time more accurately knowing where to go.

KrakenKid began to type in a quick message to the hybrid to reassure her.

KrakenKid in Cody's phone: Hey, it's KrakenKid. Sorry for the delay, penguins can't read maps for crap so I'm filling in. We'll be there soon.

The pair scanned the area before finding a tunnel in the wall, looking like it hadn't been used in years judging by how many vines were growing there. Cody peered down the dark hole, but quickly remembered some things he brought with him, bring out a lantern. "KrakenKid, mind holding this?"

The kraken held out his arm to accept it but the phone got another text. KrakenKid stopped to read it, and blood drained from his face. Cody checked over his shoulder to see what he was scared of.

Tanith: Sounds great! See you soon, KrakenKid. Please get me out of here, it's really dark.

"Kraken? You okay?" KrakenKid snapped out of it and wrote a quick message.

KrakenKid in Cody's Phone: Are you mad at me at all?

Tanith: No... Why? Is there something I should be mad about?

Cody's eyebrows knotted together. "Uh, Kraken?"

"That's not Tanith." He said immediately, facing Cody head on. His eyes were deadly serious. "I have no idea who it is or what they're trying to get us to do, but that's not Tanith texting us. They're pretty good at mimicking her but... That's not Tanith." He repeated again, rubbing the back of his head.

Cody scanned him, shaking his head. It sure sounded like her, what was he talking about? "Are you sure? You seem kinda off right now."

But his head shook firmly, staring right into his brown eyes. "No. She called me KrakenKid."

Cody gave gave him a long look. "So do I! That's your name! Dude, if you're going to be crazy, we can't go down there-"

"No!" The kraken's eyes turned furious, tentacles curling into fists. "You don't understand! Ever since she came up with it, she's almost never called me anything but 'KK'! I haven't heard her say my actual name when she wasn't angry since then! She loves that nickname more than anything and she'll take it to her grave! It's. not. Her." He finished.

Cody paused, but realized he was right. Tanith would only ever call him KrakenKid if she had to and she didn't have to now. Every time they talked about him, it was always KK and not KrakenKid. He wasn't sure if it was as exaggerated as KrakenKid said, but it did feel a bit off.

"Why is she the only one with a phone?" He mumbled. "Why isn't she freaking out more? Or saying anything else? It kinda feels like she's saying the bare minimum of what she has to."

The two of them gazed down the hole, now determined to find out. Cody kept his spear close and KrakenKid took the lantern from him. "Ready to find out who this is?" Cody asked.

"You bet." KrakenKid answered.

The tunnel had no other light other than the lantern KrakenKid held up. Not only this, but it was clear barely anyone was here. It was cold and filled with vines, crystals and moss. He could feel the pain from his previous wounds from the cave in starting to set back in.

Then, deja vu hit him. Why did all of this feel so familiar?

"Kraken?" It was Cody's voice that filled his ears. "You alright?"

He immediately shook himself. "I'm fine. Just spaced out for a second."

Then it hit him like a ton of bricks: This was just like his prophetic dream. Possibly his death dream.

He stopped abruptly, his heart now in a panic. Cody stopped soon as well, turning back to look at him. "Uh, KrakenKid? Come on, we gotta go! I don't mean to rush you but whatever texted us is down here! Do you want to find out or not?"

He felt his eyes widen in terror. It was just like his dream, almost to the point. And if everything was happening just like the dream, that could only mean one thing.

He checked behind Cody, and saw them. A pair of glowing, blue eyes. Cody whipped around, noticing his distress and saw him as he stepped into the light.

A strangely calm Hulk.

"Professor?" Cody asked unsurely.

KrakenKid knew what was coming, but didn't react fast enough to move out of the way. Hulk launched himself right into KrakenKid and they hit the wall. His gun and lantern clattered to the ground. With the wind knocked out of him, KrakenKid couldn't fight back like he normally would. A heavy punch to his face made him crumble to the ground. Cody screamed something, getting Hulk's attention.

Yellow eyes opened to watch as it unfolded again, Cody dodging Hulk's swings but messing up and getting sent across the room and hit the wall.

KrakenKid might have avoided it, but his emotions spiraled out of control at that point, filled with fear, anger and confusion of what to do. Hulk loomed over the penguin's sprawled out form, and KrakenKid acted without thinking.

He snatched his gun from the ground and shot Hulk's back. Hulk slowly faced him before coming right at him. KrakenKid wished he were anyone else in a different situation than him being there now.

KrakenKid raised his gun, almost reaching the trigger but it was slapped out of his hand in an instant.

Hulk's hand closed around his windpipe, lifting him off the ground until he hovered in the air. He tried to do anything to get loose, but he remained unfazed and only tightened around his throat if anything. He heard screaming but he wasn't sure from what. Vision was failing him and he couldn't get anything in it out of his lungs.

KrakenKid went limp.

"KRAKENKID!"

Cody screamed all he could but he wasn't getting anywhere. Thinking fast now that the kraken became a rag doll, he took his spear and launched it at Hulk. It stuck in his side, getting him to drop the Tide Changer in surprise, but then he turned his unwanted attention to Cody.

The king, now weaponless.

Hulk staggered over to him, but seemed to smirk smugly at him, something he never saw him do before. "King of Atlantis." His voice was warped, definitely not Hulk since Hulk couldn't speak clearly, or at least not that well. "You have lost."

Cody eased up, staring him right in the eye. "What do you mean?"

He only chuckled at that. "All other allies can't help you! I just took out the last one, and now you're alone." He raised his fist. "Doesn't feel too great, does it?"

The fist connected with his face, hard. Cody was out like a light before he even hit the ground.
******************************
I'm so tired right now so this is gonna be quick.

Prophetic dream came true, but KrakenKid did get one part wrong. Not a death dream, but rather a near death dream, trying to warn him of what would come!

Hulk is acting strange for reasons I'll tell next chapter! Plus, Tanith is not Tanith and stuff happens!

I hope you liked this, I worked hard to get it out today instead of postponing it again! Be sure to comment what you think and such, and I'll see ya later!
