Chapter 10- The Gauntlet

Professor Pikalus

"Well Susan, guess what today is!"

My assistant gave me a blank stare, clearly unsure of how to answer. "Friday?" She shrugged. I laughed. "Well, that too but today is also the day where I finally investigate the Gauntlet." She couldn't help but laugh. "You've been saying that for such a long time now, I don't think I believe you."

"Hey! That's... Fair. But in my defense I've been busy. I've had to take care of so many things that it never got done but today, I swear today I'm investigating it. First let me get it."

Dropping through the secret passage, I found myself in the lower more secluded part of the lab. This part was special, having many important things stored in it, including the weapon in question, sitting on it's pedestal, or rather floating.

On the magical pedestal glowing with power, sat the Gauntlet. It glowed with power given to it from the Nexus and energy swirled around it. Just being near it always made me feel like the power was soaking through my skin, making a tingly feeling spread throughout my body.

"Here we go!" With a little tap, it powered down and the weapon floated down, allowing me to pluck it from the air. "Okay so now, I should probably go outside before test it out. Wouldn't want the lab to blow up... Again. That was a disaster." I chuckled, remembering the moment with a sense of fondness now that it happened so long ago.

Heading outside, I found a empty space where I could test the power. A nice open area, not too far away from the lab with some tall rocks, around my height. The Gauntlet slipped onto my hand and glowed with power.

"Finally! It's been too long my sweet." I paused and glanced around. "I am so glad no one heard that." I breathed in relief.

Flexing the powerful glove, I held it up, aiming it at one of the rocks. "Okay, if I just release the power then it should-" I felt my power in my body and pushed it all out to the weapon attached to me.

But nothing happened.

"What?" I tried over and over doing different things each time but with no triumph. "That's weird." I stared down the weapon and flexed the fingers again. "It should be bound to me. No one else should be able to use it and I definitely should be able to do something with it." I hummed trying to find out a plan. "Oh! Cody! He has a weapon that uses the Nexus's power! If I'm not doing it right, then he should know how."

Pulling out the IPhone, I called the King Of Atlantis himself. After a few rings it was answered. "Hello?" An odd voice answered. "Uh, Cody?"Confusion filled my voice.

"Hmm? No, this is Old Mrs. Sweeder." The voice answered back. I rubbed the back of my head. "Oh, I'm sorry madam I thought you were someone else." I chuckled, trying to lighten the mood. "Hm? A little louder please." They pressed. I sighed and cleared my throat. "Oh, I SAID SORRY, I THOUGHT YOU WERE SOMEONE ELSE!" I practically screamed back. "Oh I see." They responded back, not fazed by it all. "I guess I'll hang up now? Umm.. Bye?"

".... Nah just messing with you man." Before I could hang up, the familiar voice filled my ears, and I paused. "What? Cody?"

Cody laughed from the other line. "Of course it's me! Did you really think you got the wrong number?" I could just hear sly grin from the other side of the phone. I groaned, shaking my head. ".... Maybe. Just get down to the lab. And bring your Spear! I need help with something." I told him. "Okay, be down there soon." Then he hung up.

I huffed and found my way back to the lab.

About ten minutes later, Cody arrived with his Spear in hand. "What took you so long?" I instantly pestered him. "It takes a while to get here man. Sheesh. What's the rush?" He held his hands up in defense. As soon as I showed off the Gauntlet, he fell silent.

"The Gauntlet? What are you doing with that?" His eyes gazed over it with a certain level of interest and what appeared to be, fear. Every time the topic of the weapon came up, it was almost always bad news. How it was stolen, could be used as a bomb and even to power a corrupting device, it never came up as a good thing. Even the one time it wasn't, which was when we got it back, he still didn't like it. It just reminded him of what he did. "I want to learn how use it. The only problem is, either it's not working or I don't know how to use it. Hopefully the latter." Cody gave me a look. "And you asked me to help? I barely know how my Atlantean Spear works! I swear this thing only works when it wants to!" I waved it off. "But you have done some things with it. I'm just asking you to tell me how you do those things."

"Okay, here the thing. I have gotten it to do some amazing things, but I have no idea how I got it to do that! Like, those weird bolts that came out of it once? Never happened again! Believe me, I tried! I have literally no idea how I used it."

I huffed. "Well you're the only one who knows how to use and a weapon powered by the Nexus. Tanith knows magic but her's isn't reliant on a the Nexus so I doubt she can help. I have nowhere to turn here bud, you are the only lead I have."

Cody rubbed his face in a stressful way. "I know this is a lot to put on you but-" The king stopped me. "No it's fine. I get it. I'll do my best to help you but," He sighed. "Man, if it doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you." I grinned. "I'll take it."

We journeyed out beyond the lab and made it where I was before. "I tried it out here but nothing happened." Cody nodded understandingly. "Well, let's see what I can do." Then he turned to me. "You might want to step back a bit." I backed up a couple of feet before he was satisfied. "Okay." His eyes locked onto his spear, and he concentrated. "Please work." He whispered before lifting it up and jabbing it forward.

Almost like magic, a blue ball of energy flew out and it a nearby rock, but disappeared instead of destroying the rock. "Oh thank you." He sighed in relief. "It actually worked this time. I have no idea why but it actually worked this time. Oh my gosh." The penguin huffed and turned to me. "Okay, I'm not sure why it worked today but I might as well teach you it."

I smiled and stepped forward. "Okay, what now?" I said, eager to learn. Cody rubbed the back of his head. "Well, you have it on you, right?" I showed him the secured Gauntlet on my hand. "Okay that's good. Now-..." He hesitated, and sighed. "This is going to sound really weird but... Do you feel anything?" I blinked. "What? Well of course I can feel things."

"No like. Does the Gauntlet make you feel anything? Like a new source of power or like you're being completed or even safe? Does it make you feel things you don't normally feel?"

I closed my eyes, trying to see if I could. Seconds passed and soon turned to minutes before I opened them. Cody was waiting. "Well?" I adjusted my glasses. "No. I don't feel any of those things." Disappointment swirled within me. "Oh." The king's eyes darted around. "Well... Uh. I'm not sure what to say. That's how I control it and if you don't feel it...."

A sudden thought occurred to me. "Wait! Quick, to the lab!" I scrambled in its direction with the king of Atlantis close behind. "What? What is it?"

"I have an idea!" I called back.

"So how long will it take?" I groaned at the question. "For the fifth time Cody, it will take a while! I has a couple of minutes left, just hold on!" The penguin who was once pacing across the floor finally decided to sit down, but he still didn't relax. "I heard you the first couple of times, but just in case I forgot, what exactly are you doing?"

"For Pete's sake Cody! I am scanning the Gauntlet and matching it up with my DNA to see if it is bound to me. If it isn't then it's clear why I can't use it. For example, your spear is linked to you and your DNA. No one else outside of you can use it properly. The only thing it might be used for it to open up the portal."

His black and white head nodded along to my statement. After a while, a soft ding finally alerted us that it was done. "Finally!" Cody stood up and rushed over. "What does it say?"

Reading the data, I frowned. "Not good news?" He guessed and I had no other choice but to agree. "So this isn't linked to you?" I huffed and confirmed his statement. "Yeah, and even worse, it's bound to something which means I can't make it bound to me. I have no way of figuring it out without taking everyone in the world's DNA and trying it out." I threw my arms in the air and walked away.

"That's it! I'm going to bed! I am done with today!"

But even as I left, I never stopped wondering who the Gauntlet was linked to.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Yeah, I know, not exactly Halloween-y or anything but I updated so that has to count for something! Hope you liked this chapter! Once again, I know it wasn't Halloween related at all but I swear, I'll do a Christmas one and possibly a Thanksgiving because I have ideas. Anyways, hope you liked the chapter and be sure to comment and tell me what you think!

Now who could that Gauntlet be linked to? Hmm.... ;)

To be honest, I won't fully reveal it until later. Sorry!
