Chapter {(5)} Promise

Annabeth scowled and picked up her phone from the puddle. The rain beat down on her bare arms, and her red tank top was soaked. She clicked the power button, but the device refused to show any signs of life.

Annabeth yelled in frustration. Her family wasn't home and the doors were locked and she had forgotten her key. Annabeth racked her brain for ideas.

Percy!

Right. If she could just remember Percy's address...

~

She knocked on the apartment door, shaking violently. Percy opened the door, laughing. The smile dropped from his face as soon as he saw her. He pulled her inside and she wrung out her hair over the sink.

"What happened?" Percy whispered viciously.

"What's wrong with you?" Annabeth growled.

"Old friend is here. She's not like she used to be. Anyways, what happened?" Percy's voice was softer now.

"Nobody's home and I forgot my key. Also, it just decided to rain! It was hailing and I swear I have hypothermia!" Annabeth exclaimed impatiently.

Just then, another girl entered the room. Her hair was long and slick. And red...

Green eyes met gray and both girls growled. "Rachel." Annabeth said stiffly.

"Annabeth." Rachel hissed.

Percy stood there awkwardly, "Um, may I ask how you two know-"

"No." The girls chorused.

"Okay..." Percy nodded slowly, "Anyways, Annabeth do you need to borrow a shirt?"

"If it's one of yours-"

"Either my moms or mine. You pick," he smirked.

Annabeth smiled slightly, "Yours, please."

Percy grinned and slipped out of the room.

"So... We've both got an interest in him, huh?" Rachel said, icy calm.

"Look's like it." Annabeth growled.

Wait... what?

Percy came back in the room, narrowing his eyes at Annabeth, who had on a shocked face.

"You good, Wise Girl?" he asked slowly.

"Yep," she said quickly, "Gimme the shirt," she opened and closed her hands, reaching toward Percy.

He grinned and tossed her a Led Zeppelin shirt. She smiled at Percy and slunk to the bathroom.

~

"So. Rachel, huh?" Annabeth teased, teeth chattering.

Percy had just closed the door after Rachel, a murderous look on his face. "Nope."

Annabeth was still shaking as she sat down on the couch. Percy plopped down next to her, tossing her a fuzzy blanket.

"Thanks, Seaweed Brain."

"No problem, Wise Girl."

Annabeth sighed and reached towards Percy, "I need cuddles," she whined.

Percy stared at her.

Annabeth gave him her puppy dog eyes and he sighed, pulling her to his side. She bit her lip. As fast as she could, she slung her legs over his and pulled herself into his lap. Percy's eyes widened and he began to stutter.

Annabeth laid her head against his chest, "Shut up."

"Okay."

~

Annabeth woke up in Percy Jackson's lap. She knew this couldn't be happening, though she felt no urge to move. She poked his nose and he stirred.

Annabeth grabbed Percy's phone off the table and checked the time. 2:33am. Annabeth sighed and looked over at Percy. She was in so much trouble. But before going home, she had a few things to spill to Mr. Jackson.

Percy muttered something and blinked, staring at Annabeth.

"Well, this is not how I expected to wake up."

Annabeth nodded in agreement, "I don't want to move, though." she whined.

Percy smirked, "That's good, because I'm really comfortable."

Annabeth rolled her eyes and laid her head back on Percy's chest. "Can I trust you?" she whispered.

Percy rested his chin on her head, "Of course, Wise Girl."

"I don't want attention. I don't want popularity."

She could feel Percy smiling, "I know."

"But you don't know why." Annabeth said quietly.

"Then, why don't you tell me." Percy asked, smirking.

Annabeth rolled her eyes, "I used to be with this guy, Luke...."

~

Percy didn't understand why, but jealousy twisted his stomach at these words coming from Annabeth. He was jealous of a guy Annabeth Chase dated. Why is that?

Because Percy Jackson liked Annabeth Chase.

~

She told him everything. Everything from how she would let Luke have her do anything. How she didn't care how much trouble she got into, as long as she was with Luke.

She didn't know why, but she felt as though Percy wouldn't be too thrilled about her talking about an ex she really liked.

"He became abusive. All because I said no to sleeping with him when I was still young. I never want to sleep with anyone. At least, not until I'm married. But I became popular, because nobody will doubt me anymore. All except the people like you. People who actually care. I know I can trust you with this because, Percy...."

Percy raised his eyebrows, "Yeah?"

"You're my best friend." Annabeth smiled.

Percy pulled her closer, laying his forehead on her shoulder. He drew patterns on her back with his fingers, causing Annabeth to shiver.

"Percy?" Annabeth whispered.

"Yeah, Wise Girl?"

"Don't ever leave me to survive on my own. Promise me you won't be like everyone else?"

Percy pulled away from her, "I promise."

~

Annabeth woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs. She was alone on the couch, the fuzzy blanket draped over her. A pillow was now tucked under her head. Percy must have moved to his bed and gotten her a pillow in the night.

Annabeth sat up, groggily stretching. She walked into the kitchen, pulling her curls into a ponytail. She wiped her eyes, aware of the possibility of smeared makeup.

"Hey, Wise Girl." Percy smiled at her as she sat down on the countertop.

"Hey, Perce. How's your morning going?" she asked as he took a bite out of the toast he just took out of the toaster.

He yelped, "Hot!" and dropped it.

Annabeth smirked, "Not such a tough guy, now are you?"

"Shut up."

"Okay," Annabeth smiled.

"Okay." Percy smiled evilly.

"You did not just do that to me,"

"I did," he grinned evilly.

"You know that always makes me cry!" Annabeth yelled.

Percy shushed her, "You're going to wake my mom,"

"Too bad!" Annabeth yelled again.

"Percy?" a groggy voice called.

"Look what you did!" Percy whined.

Annabeth grinned triumphantly and slid off the counter, "It's your fault."
