Chapter {(31)} Admiration
Annabeth stared at Percy, "What?" She asked quietly.
"I know I was stupid not to tell you, I know I was stupid to even do it-" Percy looked at Annabeth miserably, "It's probably my biggest regret. I get it if you're mad at me, I get it if you hate me for a while. I get it if you breakup with me-" he said as he looked down.
"Percy!" Annabeth cut him off. Percy was shaking and his eyes were glassy. His knuckles were white as he clutched the edge of the bed tightly.
"Percy, look at me," Percy lifted his head.
"I am not leaving you over some stupid drugs, okay? Haven't you ever see. the Perks of Being a Wallflower?" (this movie killed me)
Percy squinted, "Watch it," Annabeth laughed.
Percy bit his lip, "It's so hard," he looked at her, "to get through this without my mom. Do you know that I think about ways to kill Gabe at night?
"I fantasize that I'll find him, and kill him, do you know how guilty that makes me? Do you know how guilty I am, knowing I got a girl pregnant and she doesn't have any parent figures to help her? You had a decent life before I met you!
"You were popular. Yeah, you were being chased by Luke, yeah, you didn't have real friends. But you're pregnant. You don't have a family to look after you. You really only have me and Thalia, and I only have you and Thalia. It's so hard.
"Your life would be better if you hadn't met me, because your pregnant. You wouldn't be pregnant if I wasn't here. You wouldn't be scared that I tiny child was killing you."
Annabeth was now crying.
"You would be happier if you hadn't ever run into me in that hall,"
Annabeth opened her mouth to say something, but the door opened and the doctor walked in. The doctor had curly brunette hair and sparkling blue eyes.
"Please lift your shirt," she said politely, ignoring the tears.
Annabeth nodded numbly and lifted her shirt, so her swollen belly was exposed.
"You're six months along?" Dr. Cin asked.
"Yeah," Annabeth choked out.
Dr. Cin nodded and applied the freezing gel to Annabeth's belly. Percy had his fingers laced with Annabeth's, but he was awfully silent.
"Would you like to know the gender?" Dr. Cin asked as she moved the. . . Thing over Annabeth's belly.
Annabeth looked at Percy, who nodded.
"Yes, please,"
"Well. . . It looks like you're having a boy and a girl. . ."
Percy froze before taking his hand out of Annabeth's, and dropping his head in his hands.
"Twins?" Annabeth asked shakily.
"Yes," Dr. Con smiled sadly.
~
"Percy!" Annabeth cried, trying to prevent him from cutting off his finger.
"You're going to kill yourself, you twerp," Annabeth laughed. "There is no need to cut the potatoes with such aggression."
Percy stayed silent.
Annabeth sighed, "Percy, is this about what you said earlier?"
Percy nodded absentmindedly.
"Okay, well, you're lying to yourself. I love you and I'm glad you got me pregnant, to be honest. You're the only person I'd dream to raise a baby with, and I got my dream.
"You are the best thing that's ever happened to me, and if you had never run into me in the hall, my life would suck.
"So, stop doing this to yourself." Annabeth wrapped her arms around his neck.
Just like that, Percy broke down. Not like when he lost his mom. But a full out breakdown, his knees buckling beneath him, tears wetting Annabeth's shirt, and his weight tugging her to the ground with him.
Since they were in the kitchen, Annabeth and Percy could lean against the cupboards. Percy's body was being racked with sobs, and he was shaking uncontrollably.
"Percy," Annabeth said sadly, rubbing her hands through his (silver) hair.
He hadn't properly cried about his mom. There was nobody to hold her funeral, so they just buried her without Percy saying a final goodbye. He had been strong for Annabeth, even though her pregnancy had added onto his stress.
Percy was finally letting it out. He was finally crying. Was finally admitting he wasn't okay.
And Annabeth admired him for it.
