Chapter {(22)} I Can't
Annabeth sighed, setting her phone down on the coffee table. Britt had dropped her off, frowning. Annabeth looked back at the door, waiting for her family to get home. They had made plans to go out for the night, thinking Annabeth would be at the dance.
She had tried Percy's phone six times, getting no answer. He had to be seriously pissed this time. He wouldn't pick up, he wouldn't respond to any of her texts or snaps. Annabeth frowned, standing up from the couch. Her dress was becoming uncomfortable. Even though she was only sitting there for a few minutes, it seemed like hours.
Thanks, ADHD, really.
After changing into sweatpants and Percy's Led Zeppelin T-shirt, Annabeth felt like crashing. She hopped in her bed, tossing her phone onto her nightstand. She frowned and buried her face in her pillow, screaming (as quietly as she could).

Percy woke up because of the sun streaming in his window. He would have preferred to stay asleep all day, maybe not wake up at all?
"Percy!" his mom called.
"What?" he yelled irritably.
"You have a swim meet today!"
"Isn't it Saturday?"
"Yes...."
"I thought it was tomorrow!"
Sally entered his room, "It's today, Percy."
He sighed, "Just have to hope Annabeth doesn't show up,"
"Percy, I doubt Annabeth meant to imply that." Sally tried.
"But she did. Where did you put my swim trunks?" Percy asked, looking around his messy room.
"It's in the dryer," Sally said, biting her lip.
"Thanks-"
"Percy. Do me a favor,"
"Anything, mom." Percy raised his eyebrows.
"Don't stay mad at Annabeth."
Percy winced, "I'll try not to."
~
Annabeth paced her room, rubbing her hands together. She still wore the outfit she slept in, finding comfort in Percy's shirt. She slipped her feet into her slippers and bounded down the stairs, yanking her hair into a ponytail.
"How was the dance?" Helen asked, sipping her coffee.
"Shitty," Annabeth groaned.
Helen raised her eyebrows, setting down her cup. "What happened?"
Annabeth ran a hand down her face, "I chose the wrong option,"
"What were the options?" Helen asked carefully.
"An amazing boyfriend, or losing him as a best friend and keeping popularity." Annabeth replied, her fingers thrumming on the counter.
Helen stayed quiet for a moment, before saying: "You could still get him back if it happened last night,"
"And, how do you expect me to do that?" Annabeth growled.
"Talk to him,"
"He's going to run,"
"Do it when he can't run." Helen said firmly.
"When- his swim meet!" Annabeth looked at the clock.
"Where is it? I can drive you," Helen offered.
Annabeth cocked her head. Since when was Helen trying to help her? Annabeth sighed, "I guess I can't turn that down, considering what's at risk."

Percy crossed his arms, glaring at Nathan. "I am not grumpy,"
"You sound grumpy," Kyle piped up.
Percy turned his head to glare at him, "I'm in a bad mood, not grumpy."
"That's literally the same thing!" Nathan cried.
"It 'literally' is," Kyle snickered.
Nathan rolled his eyes, "Stop mocking me for once."
Percy slowly backed away, exiting the men's locker rooms.
"Jackson!" Percy turned to see Coach Hedge, running towards him, almost snickering at his short height.
"Yes, Coach?" Percy managed.
"You need to win this! Campton High cannot win, understand?" Coach yelled.
Percy raised his eyebrows, "Yes, sir."
"Don't go mocking me!"
"He knows how I feel!" Percy heard Nathan yell.
Percy rolled his eyes, "I wasn't mocking you, sir."
"Well, aren't you polite?" Coach huffed.
Percy frowned as his friends exited the men's locker room, shoving each other around. Nathan yelped as he slipped into the pool, Kyle snickering.
Percy blew out through his lips as the other school's swim team entered, narrowing their eyes at him.
It's good to be known, right?
"Percy!" Percy inwardly groaned, turning to look at the very familiar Annabeth Chase.
"And there she is," Percy muttered.
Either Annabeth didn't realize he made a comment, or she didn't care. "You didn't let me explain,"
"You said enough," Percy hissed.
Nathan and Kyle stared at him, shock visible on their faces.
"I didn't say what I should have," Annabeth frowned.
"I didn't notice," Percy said sarcastically.
"Listen, Percy-"
"Why are you even trying? Why do you even care?" Percy cut her off.
Annabeth winced, "Because I care about you, okay? Why can't you understand that?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe it's because of that little show with Drew? Or maybe, just maybe, it's because you-"
"Be quiet for once!" Annabeth yelled, red-faced.
Percy went silent.
"You don't notice that I'm wearing your shirt, do you?" she asked impatiently.
Percy looked at her shirt, frowning.
"And you don't notice I'm wearing the necklace that used to be your moms?"
Percy blinked.
"And you seriously, do not notice that I am standing here in front of you, trying to apologize? That I'm trying to fix what I broke?" Annabeth shook her head.
Everyone's eyes were on them, making Percy self-conscious.
"No matter how hard I try, I cannot stay mad at you," Percy muttered.
Annabeth narrowed her eyes, "That was easier than I expected."
"I'm pretty easy to persuade," Percy said, a smile tugging at his lips.
"I've noticed," Annabeth smiled slightly.
"We always fight, but by the next day, we're over it again." Percy shook his head, smiling.
"Percy," Annabeth said firmly.
"Mmm?"
Annabeth hesitated, "I love you."
Ahahahahahahaha! Anyways, I had to scramble to get this done, so sorry if it seems rushed. I really wanted to get an update out, after leaving you guys hanging. I reread it and I was like 'Schist. This is just schist.'
