Chapter Three ~ The Future
Morning sunlight streams through the crypt windows falling upon two figures. One of them watches the other closely, holding her hand. The girl's eyes are closed and her chest is rising and falling slowly. Her brunette locks are still in the pristine condition that Caroline and Bonnie had left them in.
"Elena..." Jo sighs from my side.
"Look at him," I mutter.
Damon is shaking his head, a small tear falling down his cheek. "Merry Christmas, Elena." His black shirt is ironed and he looks smart, but there are small details which give away that he's not as together as he puts across. The way his eyes consistently watering now and how his free hand shakes. His ice cold blue eyes are worriedly searching Elena's face now. "Come on Elena, wake up! Bonnie's dead, Enzo turned her into a vampire. You're supposed to wake up!" Damon jumps to his feet, still holding her hand. "We were meant to spend our lives by each other's sides, Elena. We were meant to have our little piece of Heaven."
The sun on my back doesn't spread any warmth through my limbs, it makes me shiver. This is my fault. Elena isn't waking up. Damon is going to be alone forever.
"I want to change this," I mumble. "I don't want this anymore. I never wanted this."
"Then change it..." Jo whispers, squeezing my hand.
I turn to look into her blue eyes. "I'm sorry Jo, I know it will never undo what I did-"
"Kai?" Jo pulls me into a hug. "I'm the spirit of Christmas future and I can tell you now, there's no need to apologise anymore."
I nod, as she slowly disappears in my arms. I look back to Damon who's staring down at Elena - he looks so lost.
"Merry Christmas Damon," I whisper, waving my hand.
Damon looks back over his shoulder as if to see who has spoken. For a minute I think he's heard my voice...
"Damon?"
Damon snaps his head back around, glancing down at Elena. Her brown eyes look straight back at him.
I did it. I lifted the spell.
Elena's brown hair falls into her eyes as she slowly sits up. Brown meets blue. Pupils flare.
"Elena?" Damon whispers, mouth parting with shock.
I watch them embrace. They'd found peace now. And in a way so had I. I reach into my suit pocket and hit the play button. "Hey, for the last time guys. I've realised something today: Christmas isn't about the presents, the food; it's about family and cherishing what you've got." I sigh, pointing the camera to Elena and Damon. "It's about having someone you can rely on and never giving up on them. Like Elena and Damon the vampire world's Romeo and Juliet.
"I'm a villain, I've destroyed so much and killed so many but I deserved that. And... I regret it. I'm... God I'm leaking again, I'm sorry. See... when your family decides that you're nothing but an irredeemable piece of trash, well... I guess the best thing to do is prove them right, right? And I did. It was horrible. I'll be good now and forever for all those times I never was. I'll be a better man. I'll love the world like I should.
"Please... Please I don't want to be alone on Christmas... I don't want to be alone anymore... Jo I'm so sorry. Everyone, God dammit everyone I caused pain to, everyone I killed, whatever I did wrong I'm so sorry." My knees hit the snow with a crunch as I let the camera fall from my grasp. It was over. I couldn't do anything.
"What's that?" Elena sits up out of the coffin, pointing towards the camcorder. Oh dear...
A curtain of hair falls around Elena's face as she reaches down and picks up the camcorder, hitting play. "It's Kai. Let's play it."
Damon groans but nods. "Hold it still then."
Damon and Elena watch the video. The waiting is excruciating, watching their emotions play out on their faces: anger, pain, laughter, sadness, pity and then happiness.
Elena glances upwards, eyes meeting mine for a brief second. "Kai?"
I nod. I mean I know she can't see me but still...
Elena smiles. "I forgive you, Malachai Parker. I really do, it wasn't just your fault."
"See, Christmas is all about giving," Jo whispers in my ear. The scene changes once again.
