19: Traveling

According to Pakkun, my mom and siblings were traveling within the land of fire and were heading to Suna with a nomadic group. Seiichi had fallen asleep soon after we left the land of waves.

"They shouldn't be too far ahead now." We slowed down much to my relief. We had been running for hours now and the sun was almost setting.

"Pakkun, do they know we're on our way?" I asked slowing down.

"Of course they-"

"Kami? Where are we?" Seiichi asked quietly, his voice heavy with sleep.

"We are almost at the camp. Do you need us to stop?" I asked worriedly. Seiichi hasn't really eaten much today.

"My tummy hurts...I'm kinda hungry." I looked at Pakkun for help and he grunted before changing our course to south instead of west.

"There's a stream close by."

"Thank you Pakkun." The breeze was cool against the skin as we walked out of the trees into a clearing where the stream was. Seiichi got off my back and I took a moment to stretch before moving close to the water.

"We must hurry. I do not know when the nomads will pack up camp and leave. " Pakkun warned and I waved him off letting him know I heard him.

"Seiichi, gather some sticks please." The boy ran off without a word as I removed my robe and sat it on the rocks so that it wouldn't get wet before moving over to the water. It was cold, but manageable as I watched the water closely. Just as a fish darted past, I reached into the water and gripped the fish tightly, successfully catching it.

"Woah! How'd you catch it like that?!" I turned slightly to see Seichii with an armful of sticks, looking at me with wide eyes.

"It's simple, I could teach you if you'd like," Seiichi nodded happily as he dropped the sticks and ran over towards me. Digging a good sized hole in the ground close to the stream, I made a small pass just big enough to let some water fill the hole before putting the fish in it. "Ok Seiichi, you'll have to be real still and patient. Don't lean over too much or the fish will spot you and swim away ok?" Seiichi hummed in response, sticking his tongue out in concentration causing me to laugh before making my way over to the abandoned sticks. Once again, I dug a small hole before placing the sticks in a pile in the hole. Hearing a sudden splash and a yell, I turned around quickly to see Seiichi barely holding onto a fish.

"Put it with the other!" I yelled and the boy stumbled a bit before placing the fish safely with the other one.

"Ok Seiichi, I'll clean the fish as soon as I get the fire started."

"Don't you need a match or something?" Seiichi questioned and I shook my head.

"No, I'll just use a jutsu to light it." Making a few hand signs I exhaled gently in order to keep the fire controlled as it began to catch on the sticks.

"How'd you do that??" Seiichi asked and I looked at him confused.

"What do you mean? It was just a simple jutsu," He tilted his head seeming more confused than I was and I sighed. "Pakkun, would you explain the basics to Seiichi? I have to clean the fish so we can cook it and be on our way before dark." The dog nodded and begrudgingly made his way over to Seiichi as I grabbed my kunai and began cleaning the fish. When I was done with the first one I found a good stick and skewered the fish before handing it off to Seiichi, who immediately put it over the fire as I began cleaning my own fish.

"Kami? Are we a family?" Seiichi asked suddenly catching me off guard as I put the fish on a stick.

"Well yes, but we aren't alone. We are going to find my brother and sister. I fear my mother will not be able to come with us because of her illness, but I'm sure she will allow me to take my siblings to raise them." I answered quietly as I began cooking my fish.

"Are we important like the Uchiha's were? If we're a family will we be considered a clan? What's our last name?" I laughed at Seiichi's curiousity.

"Looks like someone's come out of their shell," Seiichi's face brightened with red and he suddenly began to stutter causing me to laugh even more. Pulling my fish towards me a began to nibble at it, seeing as it was too hot to take a big bite. "Sorry if this is not the best dinner, but it is all I can offer for now."

"Oh! No, it's great! Thank you!" We finished the rest of our meal in silence before putting the fire out with water from the stream. Slipping on my robe, I grabbed Seiichi's hand as Pakkun began to lead us to the nomad camp. It was almost dark now, the sky turning a dark purple and blue as the moon began to rise.

"Pakkun says there's a school for kids who want to be ninja's. Do you think I could go? Even if I've never been before now?" Seiichi asked quietly and I offered him a smile.

"If that's what you want, I will enroll you as soon as we fill out your citizenship papers."

"We're here!" Pakkun called gaining my attention immediately.

"Finally..." Sasayaki hissed causing Seiichi to jump.

"I forgot she was there!" He cried and I nodded in agreement.

"Honestly, I did too. This is the quietest she's ever been." The white snake tightened around my neck, silently threatening me to say more.

"Who goes there?!" In an instant we were surrounded and I pulled Seiichi closer to me as I glared silently at the newcomers.

"We are here to reunite Kami with his brother and sister. I was here earlier and was granted permission to escort the boy here." Pakkun spoke as if he expected this to happen as the men began to relax. One man with dark green hair stepped forward offering a smile as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Sorry bout that. Lots of people are looking for your mother because of who she married so we've been on high alert. She's one of us now, it's our job to protect her." I blinked at the man uninterested.

"Where are they?"

"You can't speak to your mom, she's resting, but the kids are in the small tent packing their stuff." I sighed as I let go of Seiichi, who seemed reluctant to leave my side.

"I would like to see her." I made sure that there were to be no arguments regarding the matter as Sasayaki left my neck, not breaking eye contact with the man as she moved to my right arm.

"Of course... this way," The man led us to the camp. "I am Moshida by the way." I gave a silent nod in response shutting down his attempt to begin a conversation.

"Kami... is more of a silent type." Pakkun offered Moshida awkwardly who only waved in response.

"I understand. Man, what that boy has been through-"

"You know nothing of what I have been through. I assure you of that, Moshida." I interrupted him earning an annoyed glare from him.

"Right," he looked away scowling. "She is in that tent over there." Pointing at the tent in the center of the scruffy camp. Seiichi had been silent ever since we met these people causing me to be quite concerned. His social skills would need improvement.

"Pakkun? Do you know where my siblings are?" I asked looking down at the expert tracker.

"Yes, they are in the tent closest to the firepit."

"Please take Seiichi to them," The boy's grip on my hand tightened and I let out a small sigh before getting down to his level. "Listen Seiichi, you will need to meet them without me alright? They are going to be your new siblings so you'll need to get along with them. I will join you soon I promise." Seiichi hesitantly nodded before letting go if my hand.

"O-okay." Ruffling his hair I offered a smile before walking into my mother's tent. The inside of the tent was almost completely dark, save for the steady stream of light that came from an oil lamp that sat on a lonely table. Beside the table was a cot where a woman with kind blonde hair seemed to sleep, but she didn't seem to be sleeping peacefully. Stepping towards the woman carefully, I leaned down onto my knees and grabbed her cold hand.

"So you are my mother..." I paused pushing a stray hair from her sweaty face. "It seems as though this is the first time I have actually seen you. I do hope you remember me, mother." The woman's breathing in front of me was unsteady and her hand weakly squeezed my hand.

"What kind of mother would I be if I forgot my own child?" The voice that met my ears was soft and frail as if it were raised in the slightest, it would crack. I looked at her face my eyes meeting her light blue ones.

"My eyes have changed as well as my name. I would not expect you to remember me." I argued, my heart heavy with emotion.

"No matter what changes, you are still my baby boy," she paused taking a deep breath. "What are you called now?"

"Kami. Or Shun to those of my past who gave me a family before I began life in Konoha." I answered as my eyes began to sting from tears.

"Do not cry my little god." so I got the nicknaming from her.

"I'm sorry for abandoning you mother."

"Don't you dare talk as if you had a choice! You saved your family's lives. Be proud of that." She scolded before reverting to a coughing fit that surely drained her. I looked at her worriedly as she gave me a tired smile.

"Would you be willing to swallow a snake?" My mother gave me a crazy look and I took the opportunity to explain.

"I can summon snakes that could heal you. I would allow then to bite you, but I fear that your body would not be able to handle it," I started thinking of when I first came into the tent. "I could also give you some snakes to help your sleeping."

"After everything we've tried...I guess this wouldn't hurt." With an uneasy smile she let go of my hand and painfully lifted herself up. I grimaced as I looked away summoning a green and dark blue snake.

"The green snake will heal you internally. Normally the effects would take longer to reach your insides, but since you are not getting bitten you should feel the effects almost instantly. I fear they will not fully heal you, not at first at least. The blue snake will put you into a deep sleep." I explained offering her both snakes.

"Please refrain from chewing. Their particular abilities require chakra, once they run out of their chakra they will disappear back to their realm to regenerate." My mother nodded as she took the snakes from my hands.

"Thank you... you must go soon if you wish to get sleep tonight. Please take care of your siblings," wrapping her arms around me, she pulled me into a hug causing me to tense slightly. "I love you."

"I love you too mother." With that I walked out if the tent almost running into Moshida.

"Woah there! Leaving already?" I nodded in thought before summoning more snakes like the ones I gave my mother.

"Please give her one of each daily. The blue one preferably at night. If you wish for my mother to get better, you will do this." The snakes left me and quickly wrapped themselves around Moshida who looked quite uncomfortable. Not waiting for a response I made my way over to the tent that held my siblings.

"Kami!" Seiichi's body crashed into mine and I stumbled back a bit.

"Hello Seiichi."

"We're ready to go! Kiyoko is asleep so you'll have to carry her, but Yoshi has everything packed and ready to go!" I nodded as a boy with platinum blonde hair slowly approached us carrying two bags.

"This is big brother?" He asked almost as quiet as mother had been. I stared into his golden eyes for a second before smiling.

"That I am. Will you be ok living with me?" I asked suddenly aware that I would be taking him away from our mother.

"As long as you protect Kiyoko. She's our little sister and it's our job to look after her. It is dangerous traveling like this." For a six year old, Yoshi seemed pretty mature.

"Of course."
