The Scars Remain

Title: The Scars Remain

Author: Random_Ns

Genre: Mystery

Quick Summary: Quite perplexing

Thoughts:

Like many books, this has an interesting premise that gets choked by its execution. A girl wakes up with no memories of who she is and how she got there - fine. People try to figure out where she came from - fine. But the circumstances surrounding it all is. Way too grandiose and the story suffers as a result.

However, there were several plot choices made that left me wildly confused. Why does she end up in London, of all places? How does her brother know to come find her five days after she goes missing? She's an entire continent away. How was he able to come at the drop of a hat like this? Why do people keep insisting she was in a car crash? Why did the doctor and police dude allow her to just... leave?

These are all questions I was asking as I read. And while those questions got answered, it was in a way that produced way more questions without answer.

So much about this book is unrealistic. Yes, I saw that author's note, and no, that doesn't mean you can get away with plots this deeply nonsensical. We're set on earth which means we need to abide by Earth rules and laws and morals and so much of this book doesn't which makes reading it frustrating. It's hard to care about these people when they're thrown into ridiculous conflicts like "my brother manages to get me out of the hospital with basically no resistance" and "the mini mart clerk showed me a newspaper clipping that shows me the truth even though newspaper articles don't Work Like That".

Speaking of characterization... Lia immediately paints the "dad" as a terrible person despite there being no real evidence of him being so from our perspective. The worst he does [for a while] is be drunk. He inquires to her wellbeing and makes... good points about their situation. He's grouchy at best. Not heartless. And Lia herself is... kinda really annoying. And why does she pass out so much? It's hard to feel for character who spends a lot of her time passed out. And I saw so little of Will and Luke that I... not only don't know what they really have to add for the story, but I feel nothing for them, either.

I got to chapter five of this before I stopped. There's a general idea under all of this gravitas that could be good, but it's deeply buried. It's clear the author had many ideas here and wanted to implement it all. Unfortunately, the work suffered for it.
