The Illusion Princess

Title: The Illusion Princess

Author: lavenderlion

Genre: Fantasy/Humor

Quick Summary: This kinda reads the way an Adam Sandler movie feels...

Thoughts:

I completely understand what this author was trying to do. And sometimes it got a chuckle out of me. But otherwise...

You know Adam Sandler movies? Or Nickelback? How they're a staple for some people but most of the population has an awkward discomfort with them? This book felt like the literary version of that phenomenon. Like I said, sometimes I laughed at it and Mary Sue and all of these misadventures, but most of the time I read it kinda like

The thing about parody and satire is, often, the more subtle it is the better. And this... is not subtle. It makes it very obvious that this is a parody by smashing readers in the face repeatedly with a brick of not-subtlety. And bricks hurt, dude.

And yes, I understand Nickelback and Adam Sandler is not in themselves parodies, but you get the picture.

Another problem with it being so obviously a parody is it's hard to judge the writing quality because the distinction between "I fucked this up on purpose" and "whoops I actually fucked this up" is hard to draw.

I don't really know what to say about this, to be honest. Sometimes it was funny. Most of the time I just kind of cringed.
