Quick Summary: Meh.
Thoughts:
This book was really "meh" for me. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't that great, either.
There were so many POVs in this book that it made my head spin. I highly doubt all of the points of view given were necessary. For example, in the scene of the ship being caught in the storm, why do we need the daughter's and her father's and the random crewmember's perspective? At least one of those perspectives was not necessary. Hint: it's the crewmember's.
On the whole, the narration was super incredibly distant and as such, it was difficult for me to connect to the story and fully enjoy it. All the actions were heavily filtered. I could see what happened, but I couldn't experience them. It was a severe downer in my reading experience.
Another downer in my experience was the problems I faced suspending my disbelief and going along with the plot events. Alexa's mother dies one chapter in by some random snake? Rusty [spoiler] manages to save Alexa's life just in time? John stabs someone through the lung and they stay alive? How fast Rusty and Alexa "fell in love"? It's all too convenient and staged.
There were instances of awkward dialogue and awkward descriptions, too. "Tell me, where did you get that pendant? But first, let me get you something. You look cold." , just as an example. Or, "The rope again met the pinnacle in the swing, and he used its momentum to pull himself up to his belly and wrap his arm around the zigzagged siderope."
I think my biggest problem about this book was I just didn't care. There was nothing that really made this stand out to me, which is bad considering the plot could be so cool if I actually cared about it. But compounding factors [see above] just... left me feeling very "meh" about this.
