On the Eve of Darkness
Title: On the Eve of Darkness
Author: sailorminimoon
Genre: Fantasy/Short Story
Quick Summary: I... can't properly summarize my feelings into a sentence for this.
Thoughts:
I wasn't sure how well a high fantasy story could be told in four parts, but after reading this, I have my answer.
The answer? This definitely would've done better as a full-fledged novel, or even a novella, rather than a short story.
The way this is formatted, I don't care about the characters. I don't care about the plot. I don't feel the sense of urgency that this sort of storyline requires. The story is given to us via an omniscient point of view - I think - which already makes me feel kind of meh about the read, but it's compacted by how fast everything moves. You can't sit down and enjoy any of it because you're moving on as soon as it's mentioned. The thing I enjoyed the most is meeting Luck, the shapeshifter, except I could hardly enjoy that before I was whisked off to the very next thing. And the pacing is a massive problem considering we're cramming a roughly three-month venture [I think?] into... three chapters.
Like I said, this would be better served as a longer piece of fiction, where everything could be covered in more detail and more time could be devoted to make readers care about... well, any of this.
The writing itself is decent. I didn't really have any qualms about grammar or spelling or any of that... which is good.
Unfortunately, this read was dry and painfully boring to read. At least it was short.
