Thoughts:
I really didn't know what to make of this book, to be honest. There are many elements that I wanted to appreciate - things that piqued my curiosity but... the execution ruined.
For example, Magnolia. I want to like her. Her character design is very reminiscent of Kim Possible, which is unfortunate because I like Kim Possible. I do not like Magnolia. I am always reluctant to call characters "Mary Sue" types but she... most certainly is. She's the best assassin. Most people love her. Of course she's troubled by some old flame but it hardly matters when she steps on everyone else and has a sassy comeback to anything thrown at her and look how many badass weapons she has and how easy she disarms someone and look at her she's so cool!
She's. Painfully obnoxious.
That and literally in the first chapter we see slutshaming AND ableism in the same breath. What a way to endear a character to me. It would be one thing if she was meant to be a character we initially dislike and then she develops over time but... from the getgo, the narrative itself favors Magnolia, so much so that it's absurd. We're supposed to like her.
Unfortunately, I don't.
On the whole, the writing was decent. There's more telling than I would've liked and of course no writing is exempt from needing edits but. It was readable. The dialogue was a bit clunky in places. The plot is easy enough to understand, but there was some confusion to be had about Magnolia's boss threatening her. If she's really as good at her job as she and the narrative want me to believe, then threatening her is wholly unnecessary.
But all the writing in the world doesn't really matter if I can't care about the characters I'm reading about.
