It was dark, everything was dark, Serena could barely see the hedge stones around her. There was a quick snap of a twig and she whipped around, feeling her long brown hair graze the side of her neck. Why did she let her friends drag her into the graveyard during the peek witching hour, she had no idea. Her mother had always told her to never step foot in a graveyard because you never knew what spirits you could be disturbing, but yet again, when has a teenager even listened to their parents?

She heard another loud snap, it was closer this time. Serena's eyes darted around the small area of sight she could see. There was still nothing.

Serena shook her head. It was probably nothing, maybe a possum, or a raccoon. She continued forward, the goal of the bet with her friends was to reach the giant morgue in the middle of the cemetery before either of them did. Sounds very low risk until you remember that the last person there was to spend the rest of the night inside of it, and Serena wasn't going to let that happen to her.

There was another snap this time, followed by a low whooshing noise, but Serena ignored it. 'The wind must be picking up,' she thought to herself. Serena picked up her pace, wanting to reach the house first.

She kept going until she saw the cracked bricks of the morgue. She smirked, not hearing any movement around, and sprinted into the building.

"Boo!" she heard someone scream as soon as she stepped onto the threshold. Serena stumbled backward, falling onto the cold, stone floor. Serena looked up to see her friend Wes Holland standing over her.

"Wes, what the hell," Serena exclaimed, rubbing her temple. "You scared me."

Wes smirked turning on the flashlight in his hand. "It's almost like that was the whole point of me jumping out and saying 'Boo,'" he said shining the light in her face and extending his hand.

"You had a flashlight this whole time?" Serena asked incredulously, allowing him to help her up.

"It wasn't explicitly against the rules," Wes said shrugging.

Serena glared at him, "Fine at least I'm not the last one here. Poor Lia, what will she do here all by herself."

Wes tilted his head, "Yeah about that."

Serena's heart sank, "Don't tell me-"

"That I'm already here," her best friend Aaliyah Torres said emerging for the corner of the room. "Sorry Serena, guess you're the chosen one."

"Great," Serena groaned sinking to the floor. "I get to spend a night with dead people, and cobwebs," she said shaking a huge web off of her hand

"You know, it could be worse," Aaliyah pointed out, grabbing the flashlight from Wes's hand. "You could be stuck in here with the spirits," she said holding the light under her chin, illuminating her face. "What's that thing your mom always says?"

Wes snapped his finger, "Felicity? Serena's mom, uh, she says-"

"The spirits always surround us and we should be careful about which ones we awake," Serena repeated dully.

Her mother was constantly warning her about ghosts, spirits, and other supernatural creatures for most of her life. The one rule that she had was the Serena was not allowed to scream. No matter how scared she was, there was another way to channel her fear. Since a young age, her mother had been teaching her these ways. Jumping, biting her lip, shaking off whatever urge she felt, and the most important thing, staying away from things that could scare her.

"She also says whatever you do, don't scream," Aaliyah said jumping forward, trying to get her friend to emit a small shriek.

"Already tried that," Wes said lazily, leaning against the wall. "She fell backward, but no scream."

Serena rolled her eyes, "Was this your plan all along, try to get me to scream? Because that's not gonna work, my mom says I haven't since I was nine years old, right before Dad-" her voice trailed off, leaving a cold tension in the air. "But that doesn't matter," Serena said taking a deep breath in. "I am going to survive the night."

"That's the confidence I like to hear," Aaliyah said nodding. "Wes, what do you say we get outta here, and like Serena begin her night of fun."

Wes's eyes widened, "You worded that terribly," he said laughing quickly.

Aaliyah wrinkled up her nose in disgust. "Shut up, we're leaving," she decided walking out of the opening.

"Byeee," Wes said as Aaliyah dragged him out of the morgue.

Serena waved halfheartedly setting her head against the pillar in the middle of the room. She began to pick at the skin around her nails, there was virtually nothing to do. She could try and go to sleep but there wasn't any use in that. She also didn't want her purse to possibly be stolen, which was unlikely to happen but not impossible.

She looked around for something on the floor that she could possibly mess with, or at least keep her entertained until the morning. It was going to be a long night ahead of her.

Serena must've fallen asleep because the next thing she remembered she was jolted awake by a loud crash coming from the cellar. She looked around, her head still a little fuzzy from her nap, but there was no one to be seen.

Serena stood up carefully, it wouldn't hurt to check out that noise, right? She looked for a way down to the bottom floor, surveying the room carefully. She walked to the very corner, where she saw a trap door on the floor. There was no need for her to open it as it was already ajar.

"Interesting," she muttered to herself, descending the ladder into the dark cellar way. It was already hard for her to see in the main room, but this was even worse. The only way she could see was if something was five inches away from her face, other than that, her sight was completely useless.

She could hear a small creek nearby. "Whose there?" she asked instantly. "Seriously Wes if this is you, I'm gonna kill you."

But there was no response, all Serena could hear was the sound of her own breath. "I'm serious, Wes, Aaliyah just come out already."

The silence was practically deafening. "All right, you left me with no choice," Serena said reaching her hands out for the light. She stumbled around in the darkness until she felt a string in front of her. She pulled the string down as fast and hard and she could, as the room burst with light.

What Serena saw in front of her what absolutely terrible. There was a pale woman in front of her, with a grey tint to her skin. Her eyes were bright red like she had just been crying. But that wasn't the worst part, her mouth was aloof, extending far past her chin, and down to the bottom of her neck.

The woman extended her hand, trying to grab Serena's shirt. Serena began to feel her pace quicken. Serena scrambled up to the ladder that she had just walked down, trying to climb up and quickly as possible. But the woman had gotten a hold of her leg, pulling her down.

Serena pulled to fight her, but the woman was too powerful, successfully dragging Serena back down to the ground level. Serena hit the ground with a thud, the wind knocked out of her.

The woman loomed over her, studying her carefully. She then unlatched her jaw further. Serena could see into the back of her throat. It was a dark blue.

Then she screamed. A bloodcurdling, deafening shriek. She heard the shattering of windows from upstairs. The woman was gone just as she floated into thin air. There was no trace of her ever being in the room.

Thoroughly confused, Serena rushed up the ladder and onto the main floor. Glass littered the floor, all of the windows has been broken, shattered. That woman couldn't have done that. If she had escaped through the window, there would just be one broken, not the entire thing.

Serena could feel herself begin to panic, she had to leave. No one could see her like this, she had to figure out what was happening to her.

"And that's why I left," Serena said simply. It was the next day at school and she was recounting the events of what happened last night to Aaliyah.

Serena had ended up running home after what had happened in the cemetery, but she couldn't get herself to sleep. She kept replaying the events, the woman, the scream, the window, it just didn't add up.

"I think I know what happened," Aaliyah said gravely, closing her locker.

"What?" Serena asked, her face lighting up.

"The spirits got to you," she exclaimed giggling.

Serena rolled her eyes, "Aaliyah, now your the one who sounds crazy," she said shaking her head. "I'm being serious, what do you think happened with the windows."

Aaliyah shrugged, "Beats me. Maybe there was a storm. With no lighting, or rain, or wind, or thunder."

"I get it, I get it," Serena responded. "It sounds impossible, but it really happened."

"It doesn't just sound impossible, it is impossible," Aaliyah said seriously. "There is literally no scientific or realistic explanation as to why that happened."

Serena sighed, "Maybe we need to think outside of the box."

But Aaliyah didn't look like she was listening. She nudged Serena in the side. "Look," she said gesturing across the hall at a pair of their classmates: Ethan Morgan and Benny Weir. "They keep glancing over here and then whispering to each other.

Serena's eyes narrowed. She noticed that Ethan kept staring at her, raising his eyebrow. "Why does Ethan keep looking at me like that?" she asked quickly.

        "Like what?" Aaliyah responded.

"Like he knows something that I don't."

And we were in screaming colors,
and I remember thinking
