17. don't play with ouija boards- or demons for that matter
[three geeks and a demon: season 1, episode 12]
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
Serena was sitting at Benny's Kitchen table facing Evelyn and her mother. She decided to come clean, about everything. The figure she had seen, why it was in the negative of her photo, and that the thing, whatever it was, hadn't disappeared. The worried faces on the two women did not help calm Serena's nerves. "What?" she asked timidity. "Why do you two look like that?"
Felicity and Evelyn exchanged worried glances before turning back to Serena. "Sweetie, do you remember what we told you about Banshees? The true ones?"
Serena shook her head, "I remember what they look like. I remember that I saw one before Dad died and that night in the graveyard. And I know that thing is a banshee, but I don't know why it's here," she said quickly.
"Has anyone else seen the figure?" Felicity asked instantly.
Serena took a deep breath in, "If someone has, they haven't mentioned it to me."
Evelyn cleared her throat, "Serena. If a banshee is here in Beacon Hills again, and it hasn't come to awaken your powers. That can only mean one thing."
Serena looked extremely confused, "Which is what? What does this mean."
"If a banshee sees the creature in its true form. It means someone's gonna die."
Serena woke with a start, a scream coming from her open mouth. She heard a shattering noise and she immediately turned to her right, placing her head over her heart. The mason jar on her bedside table had burst into a million pieces. She sighed, trying to steady her rapid breathing as she got off of the bed and reached for her dustpan.
This same thing had been happening every night since Evelyn and Felicity had told her the news. Serena had no idea why, the one thing she did know was that she was running out of mason jars.
Serena jumped slightly as she felt a faint buzzing in her pocket. Her heart began to race and she pulled her phone out of her sweatpants. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw who was calling. "Sarah," she breathed out as she picked up the call. "I thought you were babysitting the dork tonight?"
'I am,' Sarah sounded through the phone. 'That's kind of why I'm calling. Do you know how to fix a TV?'
Serena repressed her urge to laugh as she shook her head. "No offenses, Sarah, but does it look like I know how to fix a TV?"
Sarah winced, 'Uh, yeah. I honestly should've guessed. Okay, another question. Would you want to eat leftover pizza while we wait for the TV to be fixed?'
Serena shrugged, "Sure, I honestly don't have any other plans tonight."
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
Serena walked into Ethan's house, which was eerily silent. "Hello?" she called as she made her way further into the house. "Hellooooooo? Is anyone here?"
"Shhhh! Serena, you are interrupting our séance!" she heard Benny say from the living.
Serena rolled her eyes as she walked to the living room. "Oh my god," she muttered, her eyes instantly drawn to the millions of lit candles scattered across the area. Ethan, Benny, and Rory were gathered around the coffee table, wearing a wrapped-up towels on their heads. They had some dusty old box in the center of the table, and Serena wasn't sure what it was.
Benny looked up at her, "Well, are you gonna join the séance or not?"
Serena reluctantly sat down at the end of the table. "And why did you guys think this was a good idea? You three performing a séance? Something is bound to go wrong."
"Serena, be quiet or I will use my power as the séance leader and kick you out," Benny said mysteriously. Serena sighed but didn't say anything. She was curious to see how this thing was going to go. "Okay, did this at a sleepover once," Benny continued. "Everybody, two fingers on their respective corners. Now all we have to do is just summon a spirit and ask it a question"
Ethan looked a little uneasy. "Maybe Sarah was right. I don't think we should mess with this thing. We don't know who or what is out there in the ether."
"Bingo!" Serena chimed in from the opposite end of the table. "And you guys honestly should've brought Wes. He's the one who knows how to talk to dead people," she said causally.
Benny sighed, "Look, we're hanging out with Vampire and Banshees. We've taken down zombies. We pruned a haunted tree last month. What's a little voice from beyond?"
"Point taken, but we're reading the rules first," Ethan said carefully.
Benny groaned, "Fine, Mom," he said in an annoyed voice.
Ethan took a piece of paper from next to Serena and began to read it out loud. "Okay, rule number 1: Never play alone. Rule number 2: always finish your session by saying goodbye and waiting for the spirit to leave the board. Rule number 3" Do not remove fingers from the board until the spirit has been properly dismissed. Failure to do so can have catastrophic results."
"Whoa, Catastrophic results," Benny said sarcastically.
Ethan scoffed, "Benny, come on. This is serious."
"What, uh, okay," Benny said halfheartedly, allowing Ethan to continue with the instructions.
"Rule number 4: Never ask 'is there anyone out there who wants to talk to us?' As such an open invitation tends to attract evil entities. Got it?" Ethan asked setting down the piece of paper.
"Sweet!" Benny said instantly. "All right, I'll start." Each teen put two fingers on their respective corner of the board. "Oh, great séance board. Are there any friendly, gentle, preferably hot, who would like to hang with us dudes- and Serena, I guess."
Serena scoffed, "Thanks a lot, Benny," she snapped as the hole in the middle of the board began to glow a bright green color. The word 'YES' floated up to the surface in big white letters.
"Yes, sweet!" Benny said excitedly. "Now what?"
"Uh- uh, ask it a question," Ethan suggested.
Benny nodded, "Uh right. Uh- are you a chick spirit?"
Serena rolled her eyes the answer flashed on the board again. "You are absolutely awful, you know that right?" she said to Benny.
Benny smiled as another 'YES' floated to the surface. "Yes! Oh, a chick! Right on!" he exclaimed, ignoring Serena's attempts to stop him from calling the ghost a 'chick.' He cleared his throat and started to ask another question. "Will the world end in the year 2012 as the Mayans predicted?"
Serena was actually interested in this answer. She would like to live past the year 2012. Her face illuminated as a bright red 'NO' flashed across the circle. "Looks like we are all gonna see 2013," she told the three boys.
"Darn in! Then we have to study for my final exams!" Benny said with a small frown.
"Are there intelligent life forms on other planets?" Ethan asked. The bright red color flashed again and Rory frowned
"Ah, she doesn't know," he said in a disappointed voice. "Does she know what 'the force' is? Has she transcended the space-time continuum? Has she ever met a borg?"
The board flashed bright green once more and Serena began to laugh. "Are all three of you geeks?" Ethan asked in an unamused voice.
"I've changed my mind, this board is cool," Serena said through small giggles.
"Oh, I've got one!" Benny exclaimed. "Will we be cool?"
Serena knew the answer before it came. "No," the three boys said at the same time.
Serena cleared her throat, "Am I cool?" she asked the board. She smiled as a bright green 'YES' floated to the top. "What can I say, the spirit just likes me more than you three," she gloated.
Benny rolled his eyes. "Okay, this is lame!" he said quickly. "I'm sure you were a hottie back when you had legs. But you are officially dismissed. Goodbye!"
The blue word 'BYE' flashed across the screen and Serena sighed, "Well, I was promised snacks when I got here, so I am gonna go do that. Serena sprinted into the kitchen and started rummaging through Ethan's cupboards. 'There is no way in hell I am going to eat rice crackers,' she thought to herself, shoving the blue box aside. 'Come on. I know that Ethan's mom has got to have some good snacks in here somewhere,' she thought as she continued to look through the snacks. 'Aha! Popcorn!" She smiled and grabbed the bag of popcorn, carrying it back to the living room, where she was unfortunately faced with three scared teenage boys, her least favorite things.
Benny's lip trembled as he looked over at the Banshee. "S-S-Serena," he stumbled. "You wouldn't happen to have a demon inside of you, right?"
Serena frowned, "I think I would know if I had a demon inside of me. Wait-" she said, looking at them incredulously. "What did you do?" Serena's question was answered soon enough when she saw Sarah walk down the stairs. Her outer shirt was ripped to shreds and she had a strange swirl drawn on her forehead.
"Hey, Sarah," Benny said uneasily. "I don't know what your babysitter's done to herself, but I like it," he whispered to Ethan.
"Does anyone else think Sarah looks a little, different?" Ethan asked.
Before anyone could respond to him, Sarah stuck her hand out in front of her, causing a few of the books to fly off of the Morgan's bookshelf. She then turned to the TV and the static turned into one large whirlpool. Sarah then floated out of sight.
The four teens looked at each other and instantly ran into the kitchen. "Okay, I see what you're getting at," Benny said as they stared at Sarah who was crouching on the corner.
"Vampires don't usually do that, right?" Serena asked Rory as Sarah used her super speed to jump off the countertop and over to the fridge. She began to eat the food quickly and throw it at the four of them.
Rory ducked to avoid a chicken bone hitting him in the forehead. "I don't think so."
"Sarah, why don't we just-" Ethan started, trying to calm the girl down. But Sarah responded in a deep raspy voice, which Serana couldn't understand. "Oh! Definitely not Sarah! Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"The ghost that escaped from the séance board-" Rory started.
"Found a body it liked-" Ethan finished.
"Can't say I blame it," Benny said slowly. "You gotta admit, she looks like a lot more fun."
Serena slapped him in the arm, "Shut up!" she snapped. "You don't want to anger the spirit, especially if it lives in a body that could kill you! My mom always told me to stay away from this stuff for a reason. God! Why didn't I listen to her?"
Ethan's eyes widened as Sarah grabbed a cake and placed it on the island. "Oh no! No! No! Not the cake! Please don't! Please, please," he begged. "My mom just made that cake for her book club tomorrow! She researched recipes all week. Please"
It was too late, Sarah started digging into the cake and eating it with her bare hands. Benny gave a nod of approval. "I like her style."
"Ethan, where's Sarah?" Ethan's little sister Jane called from upstairs.
"We think she's possessed by a ghost from the Netherlands!" Rory replied.
Ethan looked incredibly frightened. "She's just getting you guys a snack. Be right up!"
Benny was still looking at Sarah, who had eaten most of the chocolate cake. "I have got to try that cake," he decided.
"Benny!" Ethan protested.
"What?" Benny said defensively. "It's not like your mom can feed it to her book ladies now." As soon as Benny got close to the cake, Sarah hissed at him. He jumped back a little, "Okay! It's your cake. I get it."
Ethan looked at the fledgling. "Sarah, Sarah, are you in there?"
Sarah licked her fingers free of chocolate cake and stared at them. 'Elok hesse on Sarah,' she said in the raspy voice from before.
"Look, I don't speak demon, but I don't think Sarah's in there, Ethan," Serena said carefully.
Sarah sprinted away into the living room and the four followed her instantly. She held a large trophy in her hands. "Stop! Stop, okay? Put down the trophy," Ethan told her.
"Dude, it's just a bowling trophy," Benny said quickly.
Ethan shook his head, "Nah. It's the only trophy my dad has won. Ever," he stated.
Serena watched as Sarah held the trophy over her head and threw in onto the ground. The head of the trophy fell off. Ethan scowled. "Okay, that's it. This party is over! I command you to return to the board and go back to wherever you came from."
Sarah tilted her head at the four of them. An evil grin spread across her face. "Uh oh," Serena muttered as Sarah opened her mouth. A type of grey-ish fog came out of her mouth and covered the four of them. Serena held her hand over her mouth to prevent herself from screaming, but that didn't stop the other boys. They screamed until the grey fog dissipated.
Sarah sped away and the four of them directed the heads upwards, where they heard a bloodcurdling scream. "Jane!" they said instantly sprinting up the stairs. "You all right? Jane are you okay?" they sounded, running through the hallway.
"It's empty," Ethan stated, peering his head into her room.
"Uh, guys I think I know where she is-" Rory said from further down the hallway. Serena peered over Ethan's shoulder and the sight terrified her. Sarah was floated above the ground, her eyes had changed from a deep brown to a bright red. Serena leaned forward and slammed the door shut.
She was the first one to run down the stairs. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no!" she said quickly. "No! I don't mess with demons," she muttered under her breath.
"This is a bad idea," Benny said. "I told you a séance was a bad idea!" he finished, pointing at Ethan.
Ethan furrowed his brows, "It was your idea!"
Benny shook his head. "Okay, now is not the time to be throwing blame around, Ethan. But while we're on the topic. I'm not the on who invited Casper the psycho ghost in!" he said, gesturing toward Rory.
"It was an accident," Rory hissed.
Benny took a deep breath in, "Okay. Let's assess. We have an evil demon who's taken possession of a fledgling Vampire's body, who had trapped your little sister inside your bedroom, right?"
"Right," Ethan confirmed.
"Well, then there's only one thing to do," Benny finished.
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
"Oh my god, this is so stupid," Serena stated, holding a badminton rack in front of her, trying to balance the strainer on top of her head. "But let's hope this works." Rory opened the door to Ethan's bedroom, and Serena was a little confused.
The demon version of Sarah was sitting at Ethan's computer, typing away. "What's it doing?" Benny asked.
Ethan narrowed his eyes at the screen. "It's changing my status, to 'jamming with my babysitter in my Star Trek Jammies."
Serena snickered, unable to take the whole situation seriously. "Oh, she's funny. I like her." But Serena stopped laughing. Sarah turned to them, a weird smile on her face.
"Okay," Ethan said, holding the crowbar above his head. "We're not leaving until you give me my sister back."
Sarah stood up and opened her mouth. Serena gasped as she was covered in a bright green goo. "Oh my god! Oh my god!" Serena sounded as she ran down the stairs once more, trying to wipe the goo off of her sweater.
"What is this stuff?" Benny asked.
"I don't know!" Ethan snapped.
"I feel so dirty," Benny continued.
"I want to cry," Serena grumbled.
Ethan looked down at his shirt. "No way. It's ectoplasm. The physical manifestation of paranormal energy."
"Cool!" Benny and Rory said at the same time.
"Not cool, it's gross. It's like, ghost puke!" she complained.
Benny pulled his phone out of his pocket, while Serena grabbed a cup of water and tried to wipe the ectoplasm off of her hair. "Check this out," he said, holding his phone out so that the three could see it. "It's an EMF app that I jury-rigged to detect paranormal activity. Whoa- These are some high readings you got here. Okay! I will be leaving now."
"No!" Rory said, holding the boy back.
"Nah, we have to think this through," Ethan told them. "What would the Ghostbusters do?"
Serena had no idea what they would do, but lucky for her, she was surrounded by nerds. "Well, they used streams of lightning plasma to suck ghosts into their containment boxes."
"Do we have any of that stuff?" Rory asked.
Ethan shook his head. "No. All we have that sucks is a vacuum."
"My dad has a leaf blower that we could kick into reverse," Benny offered. "Nothing strong enough to hold a spirit as nasty as this, though."
Ethan's face lit up, "There is one thing I know that can suck up spirits and hold them?"
Serena raised her brow. "Which is what?"
‿︵‿︵୨˚̣̣̣͙୧ - - ୨˚̣̣̣͙୧‿︵‿︵
Serena narrowed his eyes as Ethan and Benny kept digging up Ethan's backyard. "Once we suck the soul out, we'll need a place to contain it," Ethan said quickly.
"So, this thing is like a mini prison for supernatural souls?" Serena asked.
Ethan nodded as he added more dirt to the pile by his feet.
"The Cubile Animus? Seriously?" Benny complained. "This is a really bad idea. I mean, if a séance was bad- this is a seriously, majorly, messed-up idea."
Ethan frowned. "Are you going to help us or not?"
Benny sighed as he sunk his shovel back into the dirt. "Are you really sure we should be doing this?"
"Huh?"
Serena looked down at the ground as an office chair flew out of Ethan's window. She stared up at Sarah who had begun to throw random things out into the yard. "The lucky Borg Cube! Oh, come on, my star projector? That was a gift!" Ethan complained as the stuff began to pile around the hole. "She better not throw my limited-edition Heckbat Superflyer."
Benny nodded, "Dig!" he said. It only took a few more seconds for the two boys to reach the object they were looking for. Ethan smiled as he pulled out a jewel-encrusted box, he brushed the small remnants of dirt off of it and back onto the lawn.
"Let's down this!"
"Hey Ethan, why'd you just text me one of your baby pictures?" Rory asked, taking out his phone to show the group.
Serena tilted her head, "That's actually kind of a good picture of you," she told him.
"Oh!" Ethan grumbled. "She just emailed this to the entire school. That's it," he said, looking up to his window. "This is on!"
The four began to instruct this 'ghost vacuum' by taping the box to the end of the leafblower, so that once they turn it on. The demon will be sucked into the box. "Okay, I've secured the Cubile Animus," Ethan said.
"Alright, let's get your little sister back," Benny said, flipping his goggles over his eyes.
"Okay let her rip," Ethan told him. Benny pulled on the small string that was used to rev up the engine. But nothing happened. "Uh- again?" Benny pulled on the string once more, but the engine stood still. "Did you check the fuel?"
"Yes, I checked," Benny snapped. "I already told you, twice, I filled up!"
Ethan shrugged, "Maybe the couplings you made for the tubing are malfunctioning."
"Oh, here we go," Benny groaned. "So everything I built is faulty. Everything you build is golden?"
Ethan rolled his eyes, "You know. I don't like your tone."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes, really!"
Serena shook her head, "They fight like an old married couple," she whispered to Rory, who snickered.
"You always get defensive whenever-" Ethan started
Benny scoffed, "Defensive? Defensive? You're pulling that card."
"Yes, I am!"
"You're really pulling it?"
"Guys! Guys!" Rory yelled. "Did you try the power switch?" Rory flipped the small switch on the side of the machine and Benny tried to start the machine up once more.
"YEAH! Oh, ha, ha!" Benny hooted.
Ethan high-fived Rory, "Nice going. All right. Let's go bag us a demon!"
Serena shook her head as she followed them up the stairs. "Idiots, the lot of them."
Sarah had basically destroyed Ethan's room. There were objects flying everywhere and she drew little symbols on the wall. "Hey, I like what you've done with the place!" Rory called.
"Those are some kind of demonic symbols," Ethan said, pointing out the writing on the wall.
"Is it wrong that I still think she's hot?" Benny asked.
Serena shook her head, "For once I agree with you. I'm really beginning to like the hair."
"Okay!" Ethan said, holding the leafblower out in front of him. "You're gonna give me back my sister and get in that board, or else!" he threatened.
Sarah turned around menacingly. "Or else?" she grumbled.
"Or else, we're gonna take care of this, White Chapel Style!" Ethan exclaimed.
Rory nodded his head vigorously. "Yeah, you tell them!"
"All right, hot or not, let's waste this demon!" Benny yelled as he turned on the motor to the leaf blower.
"Jane run!" Ethan yelled to her sister.
Serena sprinted over to the closet door and opened it, allowing the little girl to slip out. Serena escorted her to her room. "If you're parents ask, I was never here and this was a very, very bad dream," she told Jane before sprinting back to Ethan's room.
"It was Rory's fault!" Serena heard Ethan and Benny say from the other side of the door.
Rory frowned, bursting into the room. "I heard that!"
"Serena, you made it!" Sarah said, smiling at the girl in the hallway.
Serena nodded, "Yeah, and what a night it was," she said sarcastically.
And we were in screaming colors,
and I remember thinking ♕
Grace talks ig: the way I'm going to be sobbing next chapter, but we don't talk about that. Ah ha. ha. ha. ha. Anyways, I've had this written out for like a week and a half I just haven't posted, and I was gonna post a different update for another book, but I got tired and didn't finish it and I wanted to post something so HERE IT IS. YAY- this is also extremely unedited because I didn't want to read this over before posting because I am tired. So, enjoy the inevitable spelling and grammar mistakes that it has. I really don't have anything else to say except I'm sorry for what happens in the next two chapters <3 BYEE
