just a little note before we begin: the boys attend usc, and that was my decision because i live like fifteen minutes from there and know the area super well. it was either that, ucla (since my university's first campus is near there), or my university (but its an all women's university so...). i like to write about what i know a lot of the time, and i've never been to australia so the boys in this scenario of my imagination will be...american. dun dun dun. that means no aussie, english, or irish accents. just white american frat boys. lol

did that make you scream bloody murder already? bahaha jk. enjoy!

The blonde haired seventeen year old sat in the front passenger seat of his mother's minivan, sulking all the way to school with blue eyes lazily trained out the window. It was a hot day in the middle of August and he could already feel his skin stick with sweat to the leather arm rest of his seat. It would be the first day at the university for him, the University of Southern California--or USC for short, and he was anything less than thrilled to have his mum drop him off on the first day. He knew that would be social suicide and that he would need to avoid being seen by any of The Alphas at all costs.

Alpha Mu Gamma house was the most prestigious fraternity at the school. They had a very limited amount of members and were very exclusive as to who they allowed to join. It was a frat house for the most talented boys at USC. Though they claimed they weren't exclusive based on major, it was true that every single member at that house was a music or any other type of arts major.

It was also true that every Alpha was filthy fucking rich

Luke Hemmings had already one of the two requirements. He was a music major, had gone through the whole application and audition process--only music majors had to audition in addition to submitting their application. But his family wasn't rich, in the sense that the Alphas wanted. His parents did well for themselves, and earned a modest living in the nicer neighborhoods of Los Angeles. But did he live in a mansion? Was he a music prodigy, son of a living legend in the music world? No. His mother was only a math teacher at a private primary school.

The only reason the Alphas had even agreed to consider him were because Ashton--one of Luke's friends--was already a member of the Alpha house. The house president had agreed rather reluctantly to overlook Luke's lack of filthy richness if he fit every other quality that they sought for in their potential incoming frat brothers.

"Land yourself a Sigma house girlfriend as soon as fucking possible. You want to have done that since like yesterday, bro." Had been Ashton's first piece of advice.

From what he knew of the Sigma Delta Pi house was that they were a hispanic/latina honor society and sorority for women. They were the most prestigious women's sorority on campus. According to Ashton's words, the Sigmas didn't go out with just anyone. They were as exclusive with who they dated as the Alphas were at selecting new members to join the brotherhood. Every guy at USC wanted to be an Alpha, and every guy wanted to date a Sigma. But one of the quickest ways to get into the Alpha house was to do the latter first. Alpha house and Sigma house presidents were dating. It was only fitting that the most popular male in school would be dating the most popular female. Dating a Sigma meant she would put in a good word, and you would be automatically in.

"If you're so bored, you should have asked us to get you a dorm room." His mother--Liz--said, nudging him on the shoulder gently to get his attention. She had seen the look on his face and she figured he had been contemplating why he had chosen not to leave home and get a dorm at the university. Luke wasn't bored. He was just embarrassed to be seen in a mini van with his mother. He just would never dare to tell her that. He appreciated her too much to hurt her feelings. Instead he would be discreet when hurrying out of the van and blend into the crowd of students entering the school.

It was nine in the morning, much too early for the infernal heat that was beating down on the city from above. "Not too late, not too early." Had been the second piece of advice Ashton gave him about showing up to the Alpha house for rush week. "They hate it when people arrive really late for an application and a tour of the house because a lot of them have sports, club, or music practice to get to. Get here around nine, look around at the other houses if you want, and arrive at Alpha house at around ten or eleven. If you arrive to early, they'll think you're a loser who has nothing better to do, they'll never allow you in Alpha house."

Luke shook his head, replying to his mother after a minute or so of silence. "There was no point in getting a dorm when I'll be moving into Alpha house by the end of the month--God willing." He muttered the last bit to himself. If he couldn't get into Alpha house, there was no point in dorming anyway. His house was only fifteen minutes away from USC--forty five when there was bad traffic. It would have been a waste of his parents' money.

"And for fuck's sake," Ashton had given him the last advice, "do not, I repeat, do not let them see you ride in your mother's minivan. They hate mommy's boys."

There were his chances with Alpha house, thrown out the window when Liz refused to let him borrow the family's minivan. At least if he had been driving it, he could park it in a strategic place where no one would see it, or see him emerge from it. But there was his mother, ruining his perfectly thought out plans.

"Why couldn't you just let me drive it to school?" He groaned obnoxiously, continuing his whining and complaining form earlier when they had left the house.

"Because," Liz began in her motherly scolding voice--the tone Luke hated hearing because he knew there was a rant coming, followed by a lesson to be learned from it. "Last time I let you take the minivan, you and your buddies went all over town picking up chicks like some kind of pimps. I honestly don't understand how you could actually get girls with this thing. Boys in minivans are a huge turn off." Another thing Luke hated was when his mother tried to explain things to him using modern language. It sounded off and rather disturbing to his ears.

Luke grimaced. "Mom, can you not?"

"I'm serious Luke." She shot him a sideways glance, her lips coming together to form a tight line.

"Just because Calum, Michael, and I happened to score a few girls that one time doesn't mean I want to use your minivan as a chick magnet." He rolled his eyes at her, heaving a sigh. Though he did admit it was surprisingly spacious when one needed the extra room...

Before he knew it, the minivan came to an abrupt halt as Liz noticed this was the place he had asked to be dropped off. It was in front of a Jack in the Box fast food restaurant. Crossing the street was the entrance to the university where the long line of frat and sorority houses began.

Liz leaned in and kissed her son on the cheek. "Good luck, sweetheart. Call me when you want me to pick you up later." She told him.

Luke was about to protest, but figured it would be no use.

He opened the passenger side door and hurried out of the minivan, mixing in with the crowd of university students who were on their way to USC. As he passed the fast food place, he saw a Catholic church a small distance away.

"If you can't score a Sigma house girl, try getting a St. Mary's girl." Luke remembered the second part of Ashton's first suggestion. "Its a university literally two blocks away from here, next to that big Catholic church on the corner of Adams and Figueroa. Catholic, single, and they're not allowed to have parties or drink on campus. So when they get invited to USC or UCLA campus parties, they get wild."

At least he had options.

As he reached the black entrance gates of USC, Luke stopped to take a deep breath. "The first day is always the roughest." He told himself, and willed himself to step past the front gates.

Scoring a spot at Alpha house would make the next four years the best of his life.
