TWO
CHAPTER TWO
KIT WALKER
[ ONE YEAR LATER — 1964 ]
"I heard Bloodyface is here." Dean started, the man crossing his arms.
"You're not serious." Grace frowned.
"I am." Dean nodded, his gaze on Grace.
"I don't know." Eve added, the woman inhaling smoke from her cigarette and blowing it out a second later, Grace and Dean glancing at her at the words. "This whole thing seems too easy, y'know?"
"What do you mean?" Grace furrowed her eyebrows in question.
"This guy's a serial killer, he's gotten away with a ton of gruesome murders." Eve explained as she rested her forearms on the table and slightly leaned forward.
"What are you talking about?" Grace questioned, her head tilting slightly in confusion.
"I'm just saying, maybe a guy like that would be smart enough to not get caught. I think they got the wrong guy." Eve shrugged as she put her cigarette out and left it in the ashtray in the middle of the table. "That's just my guess, I don't know..."
"Speak of the devil." Dean spoke, the man nodding his head towards the entrance of the common room.
Grace and Eve turned to glance in the direction Dean was gesturing to, the two being met with a man around their age slowly walking into the room.
He frowned as he glanced around, his eyes widening at some of the patients.
While Grace and Dean soon continued their conversation, Eve's attention was still set on the man.
He ran a hand through his brunette hair, his eyebrows furrowing as Shelley, another patient, ran up to him.
She said something that Eve couldn't hear, the woman's gaze still set on the man.
Shelley turned around and dragged her ass against the man's groin, the man pushing her off in disgust.
Shelley ran around to a few other patients, the woman narrowing her eyes as she hissed. "He's mine. He's mine!"
The man frowned at Shelley as he continued slowly walking further into the room.
Soon, the man's attention shifted to Eve, Dean, and Grace, his gaze meeting Eve's briefly.
"I can't take it." He whispered to himself as he glanced away, the man beginning to walk over to the record player.
Eve noticed this, the woman standing up and quickly walking towards him. She stopped in front of the record player as the man went to turn it off.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Eve started as the man frowned in question.
"Why not?" The man questioned, his gaze flickering between her eyes.
"You'll get caned." Eve replied simply, the woman meeting his gaze. "Trust me, it is the worst pain you've ever felt."
When the man furrowed his eyebrows, Eve continued. "As long as the common room's open, the song plays. That's the rule. There's a rule for everything here."
The man didn't say anything as he held his gaze on Eve.
"Look, trust me or don't, it's your decision. Don't say I didn't warn you." Eve finished.
With that, Eve walked past the man, the man's perplexed gaze following after her.
"Checkin' out Bloodyface, are we?" Dean smirked as Eve sat down in the chair next to him.
"I was just warning the guy about Sister Jude." Eve responded as she crossed her arms.
"Why? Isn't he a serial killer?" Grace frowned.
"Like I said before, I don't think that's Bloodyface." Eve replied with a shrug.
"And you got that from just looking at him?" Dean raised his eyebrows at Eve, the man surprised at her words.
"It may be a reach, but I'm telling you both, my gut feelings are never wrong." Eve glanced between Dean and Grace as she spoke.
"Why should I trust you?" A familiar voice interrupted the conversation from behind Eve, Eve turning to face the person, only to be met with the man she was talking to before, standing behind her chair.
Eve stood up, the man's gaze following her as she walked a fair bit away from the group, the man following her after a moment.
"You should trust me because I'm innocent too." Eve started as she crossed her arms and rested against the couch.
The man frowned. "How do you know I'm innocent?"
"Bloodyface would be harder to catch." Eve responded. "And because of your reaction towards everyone else. If you were a psycho, you would have somewhat of a better poker face."
The man raised his eyebrows slightly at her words.
"I've seen a ton of psychopaths in this place." Eve continued at his lack of words. "It's not that surprising."
"So you're innocent too?" The man questioned, Eve nodding at his words. "How am I supposed to believe you?"
"Well, ultimately that's your decision." Eve shrugged. "I'm telling you I'm innocent, but if you want to believe otherwise, that's your choice."
The man thought to himself for a moment, his eyebrows furrowing slightly as his gaze remained on Eve.
"If we're done, I'll just be getting back to my friends." Eve spoke up after a moment, breaking the silence between the pair as she pushed off the couch.
Before Eve could walk away, another patient approached the man. "Hey, Bloodyface. You're him, right?"
Eve frowned at him. She never liked this guy.
The whole common room turned to face the interaction at the older patient's words.
"You must be the most dangerous man here." The patient continued. "I heard you skinned 'em alive. The last one, a coloured girl. I guess you didn't like the colour."
With that, the man Eve was talking to before pushed him in the chest roughly, the other man stumbling a little.
A smirk appeared on the patient's face as he punched 'Bloodyface' roughly in the face, the man falling to the ground.
The other patient started to repeatedly punch him, Eve running up to the man and grabbing his arms. "Get off him!"
The man roughly pushed her away from him, Eve stumbling back and accidentally falling against the record player, the French song stopping immediately.
A circle had now formed around the two men as the new patient began to fight back, Sister Jude walking inside with a few guards.
Eve ran back towards the two and spat in the older patient's face as the man she was talking to before continued to punch him. "Don't you ever touch me again!"
Sister Jude blew a loud whistle, the man getting off the older patient, Eve's attention shifting to Sister Jude at the sound.
"Hey, you okay?" Eve asked quietly as she turned to face the new patient, who was wincing from the pain in his face. His nose was bleeding quite a lot, Eve frowning at the sight.
The man glanced up at Eve from his position sitting on the floor. He sent her a small nod, Eve nodding in response.
Eve made eye contact with Dean and Grace, Dean sending her a confused frown, Grace sending her a disappointed look.
She knew Eve would get caned for helping him.
She also knew that Eve didn't care.
"He started it." The man spoke up and pointed to the older patient as Sister Jude walked towards the record player, the guards following.
Not saying anything yet, Sister Jude put the French song back on, the woman sending a nod to the guards, who approached Eve and the man.
"No, no." The man widened his eyes.
One guard knocked him out, whereas another grabbed Eve and dragged her to Sister Jude's office.

After getting caned, Eve was sent to work overtime in the kitchen as punishment for assisting in a fight.
Eve quietly walked towards the cell where the man that was accused of being Bloodyface was sent to.
She opened the small hatch at the bottom, the woman sliding a plate of food through.
The man frowned from his position and stood up, approaching the door.
"Hey. Eat up." Eve spoke quietly as she looked through the small window at the door. She lit a cigarette, which rested between her lips, the woman gently removing it and holding it in between her index and middle fingers.
The man's gaze remained on her as the woman brought the cigarette to her lips.
His gaze shifted down to her lips as his eyes followed her movements.
Eve allowed the smoke to fill her lungs as she inhaled it, the woman exhaling it a second later.
"You should hurry with your food." Eve started quietly as she sent a nod towards the man. "I'll get in more trouble if they catch me here."
"How'd you get back here anyway?" The man frowned as he spoke in a quiet voice.
"Kitchen detail, overtime." Eve responded in a hushed tone. "My punishment for spitting in that asshole's face."
The man raised his eyebrows slightly at her words.
Eve smoked the cigarette again, the man's gaze shifting back down to her lips, as this time, she exhaled the smoke slower.
Once she was done, she moved the cigarette to the bars of the cell, the woman offering it to the man. "You smoke?"
The man nodded, Eve gesturing to the cigarette with a small nod.
The man lowered his head to the cigarette, Eve's eyes following his movements.
The man held Eve's gaze as he slowly wrapped his lips around the end of the cigarette, his lips gently brushing against the tips of Eve's index finger and her thumb, which were holding the cigarette.
He inhaled the smoke, the man slowly detaching his lips from the cigarette as he gently exhaled the smoke from his lungs, his gaze still remaining on Eve, who was still following his movements with her eyes.
Eve moved the cigarette from the bars down to her side again as the man frowned at her in question. "Why are you being so nice to me?"
"Because there's no reason for me to be cruel to an innocent man." Eve responded, the woman making sure her voice was quiet. "The people in here aren't nice to anyone, so I thought I'd at least try to be."
"So what'd you do that was so cruel to get yourself locked up in a place like this?" The man asked.
"Don't you want to know what my name is first?" Eve raised her eyebrows.
"Okay...what's your name?" The man asked as he furrowed his eyebrows, Eve huffing a chuckle at the action.
"You do that a lot."
The man frowned in confusion. "Do what?"
"That thing with your eyebrows." Eve replied, a small, amused smirk on her face.
"What thing?" The man's frown deepened.
Huffing another chuckle, Eve continued, the woman changing the subject. "I'm Eve. I was accused of killing my boyfriend and my dog. Nice to meet you." She added sarcastically.
The man raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"Before you ask, no, I didn't do it." Eve added, her eyebrows raising as she continued. "Did you murder your wife?"
"No." The man responded almost immediately. "And I'm not crazy."
"Now you know how I feel." Eve replied, the woman moving closer to the bars as she added in a whisper. "Try being stuck here for a year, knowing you didn't kill your loved ones, but everyone else is slowly making you feel like you did."
The man's gaze slightly softened at her words.
The sound of metal doors opening loudly caught their attention, Eve's gaze shifting from the main door to the man's face. "I'll try to come back later."
She began to leave, however, before she could go far, the man stopped her. "Hey."
Eve walked back to the bars, the man continuing. "I'm Kit."
Eve sent the man a small smile. "Nice to meet you, Kit."
With that, Eve turned around and walked away, Kit's gaze following after her as she disappeared down the hallway.
•
"Ms Brooks." Sister Jude's voice caught Eve's attention from her seat next to Dean and Grace. "Come with me."
Eve frowned in confusion as she slowly stood up and approached the woman, who was accompanied by two guards.
"Take her to the electro room." Sister Jude whispered to the guards, who nodded and grabbed Eve's arms.
Eve's eyes widened at the words as she pushed against the guards. "No, no, get off me. Get off me!"
As Eve began to thrash around in the guard's arms, another guard approached them and pressed a needle into her neck, the man injecting her with a drug.
Eve's movements slowed down as the drug began to kick in.
"Get...get off me..." Eve breathed as she began to feel woozy, the woman's eyes beginning to droop.
Sister Jude's face was the last thing Eve saw before her vision went blurry and her eyes fully shut, the woman falling limply against the guards.
