< Chapter Ten >

It was early morning, the next day and Maxis stopped at the hospital before going into work since Shannon was being discharged. As they got to Maxis' car, she opened Shannon's door, which made Shannon giggle.

"My arms and legs aren't broken, ya know..." She giggled again and got in the car.

Maxis laughed lightly as she closed her door before getting in the driver's seat and driving off.

After arriving at the house, Maxis would help Shannon out and make sure she was well situated before leaving for work.

When Maxis was about halfway to work, her phone started to ring. It was one of the officers from the station. They were calling to inform her that there had been a murder. The officer gave her the address and Maxis began to drive in that direction.

Making it to the location of the murder, Maxis was greeted by Joshua and quickly brought to one of the motel rooms, obviously it being the room where the murder took place. She let out a small, inaudible gasp, seeing that it was David, Brian's friend that she had briefly met roughly a month ago.

"I should've known..." She muttered as she fully stepped into the room, referring to the Ghostface call from the previous night.

Much like the first deaths of this Ghostface case, Maxis took the time to carefully examine the body. She noticed that David's death somewhat mirrored that of the person who owned the theater, as it was a simple stab in the back and a throat slashing, compared to more violent deaths of the first victim, Joseph, and her brother, Kyle.

After she was done examining the crime scene and taking her notes, Maxis left and was headed to the station. Joshua would do the same, so that way they could discuss and exchange their findings.

Once the two detectives arrived at the station, they went straight to Maxis' office. The two of them would take a seat and begin to transfer/swap notes, like they had done before. As they did that, they heard the sound of footsteps walking past the office.

The footsteps belonged to two officers and Shannon's cousin, Brian. They were escorting Brian out of the station, as he was being released due to them not having anything to tie him to any of the murders or attacks.

As Joshua watched, he let out a soft sigh once the officers and Brian were gone, "I guess we're back to square one then?"

Maxis nodded and sighed, running a hand through her hair and groaning softly. She really didn't want to be back to not having any suspects, especially since Ghostface was still on the loose.

Joshua soon said something, trying to help lighten the mood, "From my previous training and research, a killer will usually get too cocky and slip up somewhere. We'll catch them when they do."

After talking and exchanging notes for a little while longer, Joshua got up and went to his office, letting Maxis think and work in peace.

***

It was now nighttime and as per usual, Maxis was still at the station. She had lost track of the time and was going to be late getting home.

Shutting down her computer, Maxis was finally ready to leave. At least, until her phone started ringing. It was Shannon. Maxis assumed that she was calling because of her being late or something,

"Yeah, I know, I know..." Maxis began to speak before being cut off by Shannon.

Her eyes widened as she listened to Shannon. Apparently Shannon was scared because she saw Ghostface outside of her house, again and believes that she heard them breaking in or trying to.

"Fuck..." Maxis muttered under her breath, "Barricade your room, I'll be right there." She instructed.

After hanging up, Maxis called Joshua, "Hey, can you meet me at Shannon Cipher's house?" As she listened to Joshua respond, her eyes widened again, "Wait... What's happening?" She asked.

Apparently, Brian's roommate, Brock, called for the emergency crews/services because there was someone trying to break into their house.

Shaking her head and pinching the bridge of her nose, Maxis sighed, "Okay, you check it out and then meet me at Shannon's, if you have the time."

Ending her call, Maxis got up with her keys and raced to her car. As she got into the driver's seat, she fired the car up. However, before driving off, she pulled her phone out and sent a text to someone before finally heading to Shannon's.

....

A/N: Well damn, a lot is happening here!! Also, who is Maxis texting?! This question and (maybe) others will be answered in the next chapter! Peace out and stay safe!!
