(66) First Task

The day of the first task finally came after days and days of school. Florence had not seen Harry around during those days, presuming that he was busy getting ready for the task. She had wanted to ask if Sirius relayed any messages to him or whatsoever.

Banners with the Hufflepuff colors and Gryffindor colors were passed around during breakfast, Lee Jordan and a seventh year Hufflepuff were smearing house colors across people's cheeks. Nicolai decided to get one, bold black and yellow stripes on both of her cheeks. Florence had rosettes stuck to her clothes, and a flag that was half Hufflepuff and half Gryffindor. Alexander, meanwhile, was busy with prefect duties all the while, plucking out suspicious looking drinks that were passed around.

"Firewhiskey!" he exclaimed in disbelief as he sniffed into one Slytherin's cup, "Where in this bloody castle did you ever get firewhiskey from?!"

The Slytherin shrugged, looking like he was in a hurry to get to the stadium, "Look, I don't know, mate. Some Gryffindor was pouring them out for a lot of people."

"Goodness!" Alexander half-yelled, frustrated because he had to be so busy on a seemingly festive occasion. "I need to find McGonagall," he told both Nicolai and Florence, "You two just go on ahead and save me a seat, yeah?"

The people moved in crowds as they trekked towards the stadium, Florence keeping a sharp eye open, in search for both Fred and George. Lee had appeared at her side, suddenly, fixing the face paint that smeared on Nicolai's cheeks.

"Want some paint, Flo?" he offered, Florence declining politely, "I'd like to keep paint off of my face, but thank you for the offer...You know, I was wondering, have you perhaps caught glance of Fred and George at all this morning?"

"I'm not supposed to tell you... Both of them said something about you getting mad if you found out." said Jordan uncertainly.

"What do you mean?" Florence frowned.

"Er...No! They told me not to tell."

She rolled her eyes at this, "Please, you've already hinted it. So might as well just tell me."

". . ."

"Jordan!" she exclaimed, making the boy flinch as Florence started to glare at him.

"Fine, fine. Geez, you're scary as hell. They're—"

That was when the three of them caught the sound of slight yelling from the distance. Nicolai swiveled around, spotting the redhead twins almost instantly.

The two were going against the crowd's current, yelling at the top of their lungs as they carried boxes, strapped to their person. Florence seemed a bit confused at first, but it all made sense once someone had stopped to transact with them.

"For whom will this be for? Harry, Cedric, Miss Delacour or Krum?" George asked, before writing down a name on a piece of paper and receiving a few sickles from the person.

"Merlin's beard..." Florence breathed out, "Are they serious right now?"

"Flo, please don't kill them." Lee pleaded, "They're my best friends."

"Bye Jordan!" she simply said, before marching over to the twins who were being hosts to gambling. There was already a small crowd that formed around them, taking their business to the side so that they wouldn't block the path. Nicolai waited outside the small crowd, not wanting to follow Florence as she squeezed through the people to get to the middle.

"That was for Viktor Krum yeah—oh hi Florence," Fred greeted her, not at all noticing the deep scowl she had on her face. "Did you want to place a bet? It's twelve sickles." George chipped in

"What do you think you two are doing?"

"Business, ofcourse," he smiled down at his girlfriend, pursing his lips to a straight line as soon as he saw the displeased look on her face.

"Ah... oh..."

"Is she going to kill us, Freddie?"

"Probably,"

"Okay, you lot! They're closing down, business is over!" Florence told the small crowd, trying to shoo them away.

"You don't get to decide," one Hufflepuff told her in bitterness. It appeared that that certain person was very eager to place her bet. With one harsh glare, Florence was able to shut her up, "Do I have to call a prefect to shut this down? Now go!"

The crowd disperesed with slight mumbling and grumbling, Florence swiveling her attention back to the twins who tried getting away from her wrath.

"Seriously though? After your little thing with Bagman I would have expected you two to not gamble anymore," Florence told them, arms crossed over her chest with a stern look on her face.

Fred and George only laughed at this, Florence not seeing how the situation was funny.

"Look at her, she's so adorable, sounds exactly like our mum," Fred chuckled, proceeding to ruffle her hair, his hand immediately swatted away, Florence's frown emphasized.

"I'm serious," said Florence, "You two better stop before a teacher catches you."

"Oh we never get caught, Florence," said George, "It's like you don't know us or something."

"But okay. We will, for now. Let's head to the stadium now, yeah?"

She narrowed her eyes at them, "If you two think you could just shimmy away from this, you're wrong—"

"We know, we know!" they chorused, "We promise not to get into any trouble," they followed up, Fred flinging a long arm around her shoulder, "Now get that frown off of your face."

"I'm still here, Florence, incase you're wondering," said Nicolai, her best friend clearly forgetting about her presence, "And we need to hurry if we want good seats. Now come on!"

The stadium was half packed when they arrived, mostly for the students of Hogwarts, who were cramped in the spaces that were provided for them. There was an array of crimson red and golden yellow and black all throughout the crowd, banners being waved as high as they could.

The Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students were dressed in their uniforms, seated in neat rows and columns by the Judge's tables.

A lot of people were anxiously worried for their champions as Bagman announced that the task involved dragons.

"Dragons," whispered Cho, white faced and very afraid for Cedric's wellbeing as she clutched her Hufflepuff banner in suspense. "Out of all the bloody things, why dragons?"

Cedric was the first one to come out, facing his Swedish Short Snout with a brave face. The crowd watched in silence as they anticipated his first move. He remained unseen behind a few rocks for a few minutes, possibly calculating his next move.

Bagman's commentary started exploding one after another as Cedric sprang into action, whipping his wand out and used a spell to change a piece of rock into a dog.

The furry animal barked and ran around the field, catching the dragon's attention. He then carefully crept past a few rocks, trying to get to the egg as fast as he could, while the dragon was momentarily distracted.

However, much to the cheering crowd's displeasure, halfway through, the Swedish Short snout had tore his attention away from the diversion set before him, instantly pursuing Cedric as he was too close to the egg that it was protecting.

"Move, Cedric! Move!"

"Watch out!"

"Duck!"

But the dragon had let out a breath of fire, burning Cedric's face in the process. Cho Chang looked as if she would pass out any moment, along with Mr. and Mrs. Diggory's shouts of fear.

The Hufflepuff kept going, nonetheless, burn marks evident on his face as he climbed up a couple more steep rocks and into the dragon's nest, snatching the Golden egg successfully.

A roar went through the crowd, clapping as Cedric held out the egg in victory, the still snarling dragon restrained and led out of the stadium. His marks were fairly good, making the crowd applause once more.

A Common Welsh Green replaced the Swedish dragon, out came Beauxbatons' champion, Fleur Delacour, her blonde hair pulled up into a tight ponytail, sporting the light blue color of her school.

Fleur took longer than Cedric had, by that time her school mates clearly looked embarrassed for her. It was evident that they never really liked the champion that was chosen for them, but had no choice in the given matter.

She used her wand after awhile, standing directly infront of the dragon, making the others fear for she was greatly exposed.

It appeared that she was trying to lull the dragon to sleep with a spell, wand pointed directly at the green beast as her lips moved, but words were quiet. She was able to put it to sleep successfully, it's head resting directly infront of her nest.

Fleur tiptoed across the field, delicately, like all of her actions were. She got to the nest, and grinned, thankful that she was not harmed in any way. She was about to bend over to pick up the egg when the dragon snored and let out a jet of flame that set her skirt alight.

She let out a panicked scream, promptly extinguishing her skirt. With one last glance at the dragon, she picked up her egg, and applause rang through the stadium. However, her scores appeared lower than Cedric's, Beauxbatons appreciating her effort nonetheless.

Viktor Krum was next, and his whole fandom exploded into the loudest cheers they could muster. Viktor had chose a much more violent way to deal with the dragons, using curses to blind the dragon.

Because of the pain that he had inflicted on the creature, it started to thrash around in blindness, tail swinging around violently, breaking half of the real eggs in her nest.

Out of the three, Viktor was the first one to complete his task unharmed. His marks were impressive as well.

Last to take on a dragon was Harry. And despite him being the youngest, his dragon looked meaner and much more scarier than the others. The Hungarian horntail looked mean with it's spiky tail and vicious face. They were unsure of how he was going to overcome this task.

It took the crowd awhile to figure out that he was using a summoning charm to call his firebolt to the stadium. It took the broom a couple of minutes to fly over to the stadium, leaving Harry to deal with the dragon himself for a brief moment.

But once he was mounted on his broom, his task seemed easier then, flying around the dragon as it tried to burn him with flames. He had attempted several times to swoop down, however he had to fly back up because it was too dangerous.

After a couple more attempts, and a blow that slashed his shoulder, Harry was able to retrieve the egg victoriously.

There was a massive uproar of cheers from the Gryffindors, who rained their banners down upon Harry as a big grin was etched upon his face. Fred and George began hugging each other, jumping up and down in happiness.

"Massive party at the common room tonight, I tell you." said Fred, George nodding in agreement. The crowd was slowly dispersing after the intense first Task.

"Well, we better get to work now, Freddie. We have a lot of money to distribute—" the two saw the look on Florence's face, "We have to give them their earnings, don't we?"

"Fine," she said, "But none of this on the second task, alright?"

"Promise!" they chorused, before rushing along to do their job.

Florence and Nicolai had caught up with Alexander—who unfortunately, missed the whole task as he was busy with his own. He went blubbering on about the amount of firewhiskey that he was able to confiscate and how much time it took.

"You should have seen the bloody dragons, xan. They were massive!" Nicolai said, her hands flailing everywhere for more emphasis. She then stopped, as she caught sight of the person who was nearing them.

"Harry!" said Florence, startled, seeing his still bleeding shoulder, "Shouldn't you be at the Hospital tent?"

"Yeah, I snuck out for a bit," he said sheepishly, as if he was not at all bleeding excessively, "I just wanted to give you this. Your owl, er, must have sent it to me by accident. It's addressed to you."

There was a look in his eyes that made Florence understand, going along with the story afterwards. "Yes, er, my owl is very old," Florence said, taking the envelope from the boy. "Thank you... But you should really go to Madame Pomfrey now."

"Yeah, okay, I'll do that."

"Congratulations by the way!" Nicolai said, still suspicious with the boy's actions, "That flying was spontaneous."

"Thanks," he smiled, before walking away from the trio.
