(45) Animagus Secrets
Everything had seemed quite better after that day. Florence no longer felt the need to constantly avoid any sort of interaction from the two house guests. Even she had warmed up to Professor Lupin, who was no longer her Professor really, but did not know what to call the man aside from that.
If not replying to Nicolai and Alexander's letters, she was found in the sitting room with Sirius, going through a muggle book of songs that you could play on guitar.
It was quite unbearable at first, Florence's fingers hurting as they pressed down on the strings, and often times they were stretched too far apart for her liking. But the sound it produced and the progress that she had built in one setting was enough to urge her into not giving up that easily.
Sirius had also urged her not to give up that easily, him sharing countless memories of his times at Hogwarts as the two spent time together.
Sirius and Remus were like the uncles that she never had, and somewhat made the house much more lively. Not that she didn't like it when it was her and her mum for the whole summer, but she also liked the company of two others.
And the Hippogriff that was supposed to be executed, inhabiting their attic.
No one told Florence about it first, not wanting to freak her out more than she was already.
Ofcourse the adults in the house had let that certain detail slip through their fingers, which resulted to Florence discovering Buckbeak's existence all by her self.
She nearly scared the creature away.
It took another few days to get used to the fact that there was a bloody hippogriff in her house.
A fugitive, a lycanthrope and a mixed breed that was illegally smuggled out of execution. What a party.
And because of this, requests of visiting that Alexander and Nicolai made were declined. They no longer had their every other weekend sleepover, or their bake-fest with Florence.
When asked why they couldn't have visitors, Jane would use much of her persuasion powers to keep them from being suspicious of anything.
Alexander and Nicolai had never seen Mrs. Price as edgy as she was at that certain moment.
Because of these series of events, Florence had entirely forgotten about asking her mother about the World Cup, only remembering when she saw it on the headlines of the newspaper.
Jane studied the ticket that was laid in front of her. Quidditch tickets. And not just any tickets, tickets that were for an exclusive box. She looked up at her daughter once more, "Are you sure that this costed nothing for Adrianna?" Jane inquired.
"Yes, mum. She's a professional Quidditch player. She gets tickets to these events for free all the time." Florence reassured her, and spoke once more after a long period of silence, "So can I go then?" She asked hopefully.
"Are you going to have adult supervision there?"
Florence snorted, "Adrianna is adult supervision, mum. She's twenty one years old."
No. Not really.
Adrianna was just as much havoc as a teenager rebelling against their parents because she didn't get an allowance increase. She certainly did not act her age, everyone knew that.
She once set fire to her mum's favorite apron in futile attempts to start a bonfire, crashed her first Quidditch broom into the Whomping Willow for reasons that no one quite understood yet.
"I know, I know she is, dear. But is anyone else going to be there to watch you?" was Jane's obvious reply.
"I could chaperone if you want," Sirius piped up from where he stood infront of the bookshelf, his eyes skimming over the ones that looked like it had potential for him.
"You're wanted everywhere, incase you forgot that," Florence pointed out blatantly, before collapsing on the couch beside her mum, Remus sitting across from her.
"And Dumbledore will be after my blood if I even consider letting you go out of this house." Jane added.
"Oh I have my ways of getting around, you know, just dogging around the streets," he said, Jane tensing up from where she sat.
"But you wouldn't need adult supervision I'm sure. Your mother isn't anywhere near a killjoy. We had a lot of fun back in the days." Sirius mused as he constantly sent looks in Jane's direction.
She was glaring at the man, as if daring him to continue what he was going to say. "Right, Jane? It's impawsibble that you've forgotten. Do you want me to help you remember?"
"Sirius," Jane warned, seeing the curious expression on her daughter's face. Remus was sitting earnestly in his seat, finishing his cup of tea and trying to suppress his amusement. "Oh bear with me, Jane." Sirius said again, with an undertone of mocking.
"You're not going to stop, aren't you?" she said, defeated, to which Sirius flashed her a good-natured grin, "Fur sure."
"Mum?" Florence asked, as none of the adults were meeting her gaze, "What is he talking about?" she asked, Jane's hands flying up to pinch the bridge of her nose in exasperation.
"Perhaps, I could show you," Sirius began, and as if she had witnessed a sudden swap, Sirius was no longer in his seat. A big black dog occupied Sirius' seat on the sofa, his tongue hanging from his mouth as he looked at Jane. "Holy shit!" Florence screamed, frightened. Miss Mimsy—who was playing with her purple toy on the floor—let out a string of hisses before scampering out of the room.
"Sirius!" she wailed, just as the black dog shifted back into human form. Remus was already grinning behind his teacup. Jane turned to look at her daughter who's hands were clamped tightly around her mouth, "And don't swear!" she reprimanded.
"Sorry," said Florence sheepishly, before turning to Sirius again, "You—he's—you're an animagus?" she asked incredulously, Sirius nodded, "Yes, that I am. We're unregistered, our purpose was so that we could accompany Remus during full moons. Jane had so generously helped us in borrowing Professor McGonagall's animagi notes—"
"More like you forced me to steal them." Jane grumbled.
Sirius gasped, putting a hand on his chest like a frail old man, "Stealing is such a strong word, Price. And we didn't force you, you gladly helped us if we included you in our animagi training."
She couldn't really depict her mum as someone who snooped through a teacher's files, let alone allow herself to be an unregistered animagus. Florence always thought that her mother was the boring school girl in everybody's daily life.
But then again she didn't really have the chance to talk about her mum with some of her mum's friends. It was like getting to know an entirely different person.
"Wait!" Florence squealed, looking excitedly at her mother who looked as if she was in agony, "So you mean, mum—you're an animagus too?"
"Come on, show Florence, Jane." Sirius persuaded, earning yet another glare from the woman, "I am so totally going to get back at you for this. One day." Jane promised before getting up from her seat, "Remus, back me up will you?"
The man simply raised a brow, "Leave me out of this, Jane."
She sighed, closing her eyes before channeling everything in her. Soon she felt as if she was expanding, taking up more space by the second.
Gone was the woman with graying hair, a large, grizzly bear appearing in her wake. Florence gaped at how big the grizzly bear was. It had knocked out the grandfather clock and had moved their sofa by a few inches. The bear's beetle black eyes lingered momentarily at Florence. She let out a loud growl in Sirius' direction before she shifted back into human form.
"My mum's a bear." said Florence in pure astonishment.
"A mumma bear." Sirius chimed in.
"Oh please do shut up," Jane shot at Sirius, before turning to Remus in a disappointed way, "Couldn't you atleast have stopped him?"
Remus shrugged, "My lycanthrope was exposed to a whole school of people, Jane. I think it's due time that your daughter found out about your furry problem."
"You two," sighed Jane, "Horrible, horrible examples."
She proceeded to giving her daughter a lecture "You must know that what you saw is confidential. You can't go around telling people that because we're unregistered. No one knows about anything."
Florence rolled her eyes, "Ofcourse I know that, mum. I can't exactly go around and telling people that my mum is a bear..."
"Same applies with Alexander and Nicolai. I know you trust them but we can't risk it."
"I figured that you'd say that..." Florence muttered, "So... Will you allow me to go to the World Cup with them?"
"I suppose so. I don't see why not."
"Yes!" she said, pumping her hands up in victory, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" she cheered, giving her mum a brief hug before running up the stairs.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"Writing a letter to Xander and Adrianna." she said, before resuming her steps up the stairs.
"You," said Jane, eyeing Sirius critically, "You started this, you get that grandfather clock back up." she pointed at the antique thing that was lying sideways on the floor.
"But—what—" Sirius protested, looking quickly at Remus, "You will help me, right Moony."
Remus raised his brows yet again, standing up and bringing his now empty cup of tea with him. "I have no idea what you're talking about. You brought this on yourself. Leave me out of it, Sirius."
"Moony!"
